Because Spotify has a free option. The rights holders don't get as much money per stream for ad-supported free users. Paid subscriptions likely have the same royalties on Spotify and Apple Music.

Horribly wrong! I hate Spotify with a passion and it's for this one main reason: Spotify gives about $0.003 - $0.005 per stream while Apple Music hands out around $0.01.

No way, if that was the case the EU would investigate why they are starving the musicians!

Everyone is corrupt, including Spotify and the EU. Some of you just need the bravery to say "Oh yeah, Apple is actually kinda scummy too. I was wrong."
If one would want to go full internet dweep one could say at least Spotify dos not support terrible Labour in Chinese factory’s and in rar earths being mined. But who’s counting. In the end it’s us buying and most won’t stop.

I use both platforms. Certain things I letter better on each. Seems the EU has been going hard at Apple in recent years.
They are, probably, the most powerful technology company on the planet who’s been going hard at anti-consumer practice in recent years. Pleased the EU is tackling it, they’re the only people who have the chance.

Company that would have never survived let alone thrived without the iPhone claims they’ve been stifled by Apple. Please, go on…
A lot of us used Spotify on PC, before having iPhones. In those days nobody was really buying an iPhone and I’m not sure if there was an app at all. It didn’t need the iPhone to be popular. Nor did it need Android for that matter.

They don't want to go web only.
Apple intentionally nerfs web apps so that would not really be an option.

Still won’t ever use Spotify. This whining is annoying
I agree. Spotify sucks. Their app sucks on the iPhone. The last time I tried it was in 2018 and it was buggy and awful on my iPhone and also on Mac. No thanks.
I'd rather use YouTube Music. Currently using Apple Music though. I dont understand people that pay for Spotify.

Before EU rules, Apple was constantly adding functionality to Safari. It recently added push notifications so it absolutely would have allowed Spotify to be able to implement its core function to stream music.

Now that Apple is forced to allow third party browser engines, Apple is axing PWA due to security issues. Thanks to EU.

You replied to me but ignored what I said. Spotify has two services. One is a free ad-supported radio service where listeners can't pick individual songs. The other is a paid service where subscribers can choose individual songs. Royalty rates on the former are lower, and are set by the music industry. Because Spotify offers both services, they pay less per stream on average. Apple only has the premium service, so they pay more on average.

Your hate is because of a lie. Do you really believe Apple is voluntary paying record labels more than they are required to? If you subscribe to Spotify, the same amount will go to the artists as with an Apple Music subscription. If you only listen to the ad-supported tier, artists will get less.

It's only fair that Spotify get most of it, with some set by for Epic games.
hahaha keep up. the EU get the fine. not Spotify or Epic...
This is all completely irrelevant. It is anti-competitive if you can stream an artist at $x and everyone else has to be at $x+30%. As consumers we should all be enraged.
Spotify is more expensive without paying any commission and lower quality.

Spotify are making a very clear case for it to be time to look at other services ;)

Both Spotify and Apple Music are $10.99 each in the US.

So many people here comment on how they think Apple, as a global business, should be run. Newsflash people: Apple is a for-profit business. As an investor I expect them to charge for products and services what the market will bear. Don’t like the prices? Blame your financial situation. It’s not Apple’s fault you can’t afford Apple’s SW/HW.
Newsflash, not everybody who has an issue with Apples prices does so because they can't afford them. Plenty on these forums in fact are financially well off but don't see the value in some of the top end products. You echo the best advice, buy what you're comfortable with. The only party that loses out in that scenario is the company not getting the extra revenue, not the user.

Both $12.99 in Australia now.

But Apple have high res at that price.
Spotify have promised it for two years. And could charge more…

I could bundle Cloud storage and Music and Arcade for a package deal…
