I couldn't care less about artists. They need to fight for themselves.

Yea, the big ones need to use their money and political clout to get governments to force Spotify, as the major player, to pay everyone more and stop abusing their dominant position.

Even more iPhone users use Spotify than Apple Music. Spotify supports just about everything - I can natively send it to Alexa speakers, Sonos, Google, my Car.... I get audio books and far superior music curation and recommendations and dozens of features lacking in Apple Music which is still largely reskinned Beats Music with very little innovation and what they are doing not is copycatting Spotify's UI which is also superior.
To each their own. But for using Spotify for years to me it’s worthless. Good for you

Spotify will continue to survive until March 2026 earliest, when their debt becomes due. Let’s see how they deal with it then.
I was going to suggest they'd try to merge with Sirius XM and just load up on even more debt, but I just looked them up and SXM already owns Pandora 😢

Am I getting it right: a Spotify subscriber (on any of their paid plans) has NO possibility to listen, let's say, a whole 20hr audio book in 1 month? that's wild

They increased the base price to "bring users the best experience" 😂. Got to love the PR ********.

I agree. I've got my iPhone (with Spotify) running amazingly with my Sonos speakers. But, what kicked it off for me was the original Homepod and and lack of support for it (back then). Over the last few years, I've begun getting back into vinyl. It was ridiculously hard to get a record player to connect to Homepods. Managed to get it via ARC, but damn it was cumbersome. In the end after the original Homepod was discontinued, I had enough of how hard Apple made it! So I bought a Sonos connect amp and all my problems were solved. Got rid of my original Homepods, got rid the excess equipment I needed (at the time) to get my vinyl player to work correctly, bought Sonos speakers and I haven't looked back. In fact, I would honestly say that in my opinion, the Sonos speakers sound better (and pair better). But that's just me. Each to their own :)

Honestly, Apple Music is just a better service overall with HiRes Audio und cloud upload of your own library.
And I say that knowing full well that the iTunes Match is a bit janky and there are weird oversights like titles getting deleted from playlists when you delete them from the library (they really need to change that, it's like titles getting deleted from mixtapes when you sell a record, it's stupid).

He is on Apple podcasts as well...
He is not being paid with Apple money though. And for a while, he was exclusive to Spotify. and you really wonder whether Spotify knows what they are doing. They took on all that debt during the pandemic to enter podcasting and build up their advertising network, and seem to have very little to show for it.

They will handle the distribution and advertising on the other platforms. Ek said recently that the deals with Rogan and some other big podcasters were net positive for Spotify, but that according to their math the increase in ad revenue through broader distribution will be worth more than the exclusivity was.

Personally I don't use Spotify for podcasts. Still a big fan of Overcast. Never felt an urge to listen to Rogan, so the exclusivity didn't bother me one bit. ;)

i used it a few years ago before I got an echo dot, mainly because i have an audio chromecast and I could use my phone to send the audio to my Hi-fi.
Then I got Echo dots and the Echo input and started to use Amazon music, but only the prime version. A few months ago I did go for the full version, while it is nice to be able to get any music you want, £10 a monthon top of prime is a buit of a hit to be honest.
The same with spotify, it is £11.99 a month, which may not seem a lot, but it adds up at the end of the year. Apple music is about a tenner as well.

I can pop into CEX, whihc is a second hand store in town and buy CDs for next to nothing, my CD player on the hi-fi will hold five disks at the time. My echo dots are more convenient if I am moving around the house, as I can play the same thing via different ones.

but if i am just doing house work and stuff like that, I normally stick Boom radio on these days.

The should do a deal for creators where it's half price if you upload an album of tracks a year or something.

If you find Spotify paying Joe Rogan objectionable how do you feel about Apple making Dr Dre a billionaire? Surely Dre's record of violence against women is much more serious than Joe Rogan saying mean things about the covid vaccine?

There are much worse things being said in content that Apple sell on their store than anything Rogan has said.

Lets be honest Apple are in bed with people much worse than Rogan.

I do wish to clarify that I do not have an issue with Joe Rogan being funded by Spotify; I am simply pointing out that there is a difference between Spotify bankrolling him, and him choosing to have his podcast also be available on other podcasting apps for the reach. If anything, being limited to one platform may have actually reduced his reach.

As a general rule of thumb, I found it was pointless to try and act like a brand you use or a personality you follow is somehow morally superior to another, since chances are high that they each have their own skeletons in the closet, and because like you said, Apple is no angel in any of these regards.

Apple Music

- The best deal for Apple users, family, bundles and all.

- Doesn’t play that well with others.

Tidal

- The best audio quality if you have the equipment.

- Plays nicely with others with focus on HiRes.

Spotify

- The best UX and user experience.

- The best playing with others.

In my view if Apple played better with others there wouldn’t be any doubt. The fiefdom mentality across the board puts off most people worldwide. It’s the iPhone only, that’s most of it because of it.

spotify music sounds like it was mixed in an empty garbage can with a dozen lossy transcodes before it breaches the ear

i use the music app marvis with an offline alac library and the difference in sound quality is astounding versus spotify

spotify sounds significantly worse than youtube its truly the most garbage music quality no matter what your settings

Exactly. You are buying a product, not entering into a lifelong relationship. No company is perfect, and sometimes you pick the one that you feels best aligns with your values realizing they will diverge from yours in some areas.

I think Apple is overall a decent company and does some good things, and I like their approach to privacy.

The bottom line for me, however, is Apple's products do what I need, if they stop I will find some other tool.

Each person makes their own call. Some do not like Spotify's low payments to musicians, other's don't care. For others, sound quality is the deciding factor. No one reason is right or wrong, just different.
