Apple will stick with world standards. Right now that is GSM. Until LTE rolls out in the U.S. and the rest of the globe, that's where they will stay.

Apple will do whatever they need to do right now to keep their market share. If they remain GSM only or ATT exclusive they're screwed. They need to be on all carriers as fast as possible in order to fight Android.

If Apple wanted to put out an iPhone 4G this year, Sprint would be the carrier that could do it...Otherwise they have to call it the iPhone HD.

Now that you guys all mentioned it, I was speaking to my Sprint Enterprise Account Rep who gave me a date of June 19 when my boss asked me to ask him about the HTC EVO 4G.

I then went to their website and saw that June 4 was the actual launch date for the EVO.

I went to correct him and he said, "Oh yeah, you're right, I was looking at another device we're launching."

Being the nosy individual I am, I asked him what other phone would be launching around at that time, considering all eyes and efforts would be on the EVO 4G.

He quickly replied, "Oh, it's nothing worth mentioning right now."

O RLY?

Here in NYC Sprint is very good and AT&T is horrible. Every iPhone user I talk to say they drop several calls daily! thats just unacceptable. Meanwhile I can't remember the last drop call I had on sprint. So please bring the iPhone to Sprint so I can finally get a new iPhone

I wonder why Apple did not do this all along, meaning allowing the iPhone to all carriers. I'm sure they had their reasons for it. But it will be nice to have options.

AT&T paid apple $750 million to help fund the development and got some good terms in exchange

Maybe So

My company does some peering business with Sprint and VZY. I have only been hearing the "chatter" from the sprint people... We'll have to see. Anything to bring competition to ATT and bring down the prices!

I have a 3gs and a sprint blackberry in NYC. Sprint sucks here and I get some awesome speeds with the deathstar

been on sprint for the past 10 years and the service has always been awesome where I live but my blackberry sucks. miss my palm treo.

Anyways, if I had a choice between the HTC EVO or iPhone.. I'd pick the HTC

I believe it! I mean, all 5 big Canadian carriers already have the iPhone. It's about time America catches up!

The situation in Canada is completely different. When the iPhone 3G came out it was only available on Rogers and Fido. They were the ONLY GSM/HSPA providers in Canada at the time and they also happened to be owned by the same company. Bell and Telus (Virgin is owned by Bell) which were CDMA networks like Verizon and Sprint, then decided to cooperate and build their own HSPA network as a stepping stone to LTE AND to take advantage of roaming revenue from the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Since they now had an HSPA network it would only make sense to carry the iPhone.

I would be very surprised if Apple created a CDMA version as the US is the only market for a CDMA model. In addition, it would be a logistical nightmare. Since iPhones are not repaired they are simply replaced, every replacement would require Apple employees to perform ESN swaps through the carriers as well. Also, Apple likes to keep their products relatively simple. Having identical phones that work on completely different network technologies would only confuse customers even more. I used to work for Apple, and our market research at that time showed that most of our customers at that time had never owned a computer at that time.

IMO Verizon and Sprint won't get the iPhone until LTE becomes as widespread as HSPA. And even thought LTE coverage won't be as big as Verizon and Sprint's existing coverage it won't stop Apple from allowing Sprint and Verizon to carry the phone. This is a non-issue for Apple. In Canada, Telus, Bell and Virgin operate an HSPA only network for the iPhone, EDGE and GPRS coverage is non existant. If you are an iPhone user on Bell, Telus or Virgin, as soon as you step out of their 3G HSPA coverage area, you immediately have no service. They don't even have roaming agreements with Rogers/Fido which have 2G EDGE fallback. The Bell/Telus/Virgin HSPA footprint is also not as big as their CDMA EV-DO counterpart with almost two provinces with no coverage at all.

Again, even when LTE is out, a Verizon iPhone would still need to support CDMA for fallback where LTE is unavailable. I'd imagine Apple would want to deal with this issue sooner rather than later and work out all the kinks by the time LTE hits the market.

That's an interesting point. Does make for a messy HW/SW design though.

all i want is the ability to pay full price for the phone and NOT be obligated to anything. no data plan, no nothing.

i would have purchased an iphone by now if i didn't have to tack on 30 dollars a month just to have the daggum thing. and for those of you who might wonder, YES i DO want it to be an ipod touch with a phone. exactly that. syncing with my computer is the big win.

The iPhone is passed the phase of trying to get a carrier for it. In the time of landgrab, the iPhone needs to be available across the board like Android and Blackberry. It's the only way.

This is already possible. I don't think AT&T will sell it to you with no contract, but the Apple Store will. You can then activate your SIM Card on AT&T with any plan you wish and you can just claim that you have a non AT&T phone you've bought from overseas.

So my Predictions for WWDC

Overview of iPhone OS 4.0
iPhone 4thgen or HD whate ever they call it

New features for iPhone OS thats on 4th gen only probally
comes in 8 16 32 64 available on At&T in july

Oh one more thing we want to open the Market on the iPhone so coming this fall the iPhone also goes live to Sprint Verizon and T-Mobile.

Apple will not do that, and risk suppressing initial iPhone sales coming out of the gate in July. If they are going to release the phone on all the networks, they will announce it that day. I don't remember Apple ever doing two major product launches in that manner like having an AT&T and then all the rest in September. If we don't see a verizon/Sprint iPhone in June, I doubt we see it for the rest of the year. If it's coming on all the networks this year, it will be announced in June. That way, we will see a massive iPhone launch in July or August.

That said, considering there has been no evidence of a CDMA iPhone in production, no leaked photos, signs of an iPhone on a Verizon network, or lost prototypes, I think it's safe to say there won't be one coming any time soon. I suspect the AT&T deal will end at the end of the year, and 2011, we'll see the iPhone come to all the major carriers. If not that, it will be in 2 weeks.
