There is absolutely no way of ever knowing this. Do you really think someone would know a definitive answer to that? If the rumor is true, I'd be willing to bet that Sprint and Apple haven't even decided on that issue yet.

the UK has the iPhone on three networks who love to brand every phone...... the iphone hasn't been branded by any of them so maybe apple doesn't allow branding? so if this was true IF sprint get the iphone they may not get to brand it

Not only could they co-exist, they wouldn't be in the same class. The EVO would still be flagship, and the iPhone would in no way be above that phone. The "I love everything Apple no matter what crowd" really needs to get off their high horse and see that Android and WebOS has major advantages over iPhone OS3 and OS4. Pair either of those previous OSes to a device made by HTC and it just hurts the iPhone.

The only thing missing is iTunes sync, and well, that's not that big of a deal to many.

Yeah... not so much. While I respect the "tech spec" differences between the current 3gs iphone running 3.13 and the current sprint Evo, i expect that a lot of those differences will be made up shortly.

However, it's not just about tech specs where Android is more feature rich. It's about usability. And that is where iPhone wins. It's not a high horse we are on- it's a feeling that we don't have to fight with our phones, our mac computers, or anything apple makes- it just works.

No flash? Who cares. No front facing camera on the iPad? Don't care. Etc., etc...

If life was just about tech specs, the iPhone mint not have its huge marketshare even though it is hampered by the worst carrier in the US.

I'll play devil's advocate here. No ****ing way does Jobs let a carrier out their name on his baby.

The iPhone will not have 4G and just because the iPhone is made by Apple doesn't make it better than all other phones. I expect the Evo and the Palm Pre successor to be a step above the iPhone. The iPhone has become the smart phone for the masses, for people who want to do more with their phones and have the best technology and software there are these high other high end phones.

Never said just because the iPhone is made by Apple it is better than all other phones.

I said that the stuff that makes the Android phones better than the current iphone 3gs running 3.13 iPhone OS does not matter to me, and as evidenced by market share, most people.

I guess that means were gonna get 4g in Irvine, Orange County CA.
It's the headquarters for ClearWire , but the nearest 4g spot is Sin City
Luckily I call both home

My own retail rumor...

I swear this is not intended as a joke or sarcastic post...

I recently spoke to a guy at a Northern Virginia Radio Shack who CLAIMED to be an ex-Apple employee. He said that there would be a CDMA iPhone this year, called the World Phone (which I thought was ironic, since GSM is really the world standard). He said it would be sold unsubsidized for around $1,500 but would be able to function on any CDMA network, not exclusively Verizon or Sprint).

I haven't mentioned it because it seemed a bit third-hand and random. But if a Best Buy employee can start rumors that tech blogs take seriously, maybe this guy is telling the truth too?

As evidenced by market share most people would rather have a "dumb" phone than an iPhone. That doesn't make dumb phones better or anymore desirable.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to Sprint!! I HATE my laggy Android phone that has crappy games!! I want Iphone without crappy AT&T service!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!

Right. OK. Let me qualify my previous statement-

Within the smartphone market.

OK- is that good enough?

Doubtful that the Pre will be better, I have used Android 2.1, Iphone OS 3.1, Windows Mobile 6.5 and the Latest Web OS. (My family loves these smart phones but always come to me for assistance since im the IT guy =P) and these all were bad for the following reasons.

Disadvantages

Iphone = AT&T sucks
Android = Laggy OS with crappy apps and ever worse games
Windows Phone = Nuff said
Palm Pre = Laggy OS no visual voicemail without 3rd party app

Advantages

Iphone = AWESOME OS, SUPER smooth almost 0 lag, MASSIVE selection of well made apps and AWESOME games! :D
Android = Widgets
Palm Pre = Decent apps and games that look like ports from Iphone. (KEYBOARD!!!)
Windows Phone = uhhmmmmmm Can't think of any LOL!

Conclusion, if Sprint ever gets an Iphone I will toss my HTC Hero and buy the new Iphone, LETS HOPE!!!!!

:apple:

The lack of T-Mobile rumors is good news. The Verizon rumors have been numerous and some of them have been absolutely absurd.

Apple's partners usually clam up real tight when there's a deal in the works. The Verizon CEO (and other execs) are big blabbermouths, implying that there is no deal in the works.

This Sprint rumor comes from some dubious sources. Amongst the most dubious are retail employees (Best Buy, cellphone retail); they typically aren't given any notification until very, very late.

If Apple were to end carrier exclusivity in the United States, the most logical next step would be to open up to T-Mobile USA (another GSM carrier with UTMS 3G data services). Adding the AWS band to the 3G radio on the iPhone is a no-brainer, and T-Mobile would probably have to do little work (mostly set up servers to handle Visual Voicemail). Apple could easily test a T-Mobile iPhone quite steathily.

Since there has been no hiring surge of CDMA engineers at Apple, it is unlikely that we would see an iPhone at Verizon or Sprint in the near future anyhow.

Hmm, hadn't really thought about it that way. I hope you're right.

As an ex-Radio Shack employee, let me be the first to say that they make Best Buy employees look like genius's, unless you're talking to someone who's been there a long time (who's probably regretting not getting out a long time ago now). They know squat about what's coming, and many of them will tell you anything they think will keep you talking to them for just a few minutes more.

I saw it happen over and over again...

Naa, ok maybe. Not a believer yet.
The quote below explains why i think its possible...

If your gonna do a CDMA iPhone, might as well do it for both carriers seeing as no one else needs it.

Seeing how the Palm dog-and-pony show turned out to be a massive dud, I'd say Sprint is itching for a headliner product. The iPhone would make Sprint's name easily.

Rumours being what they are, however . . . ;)

The EVO 4G is their new product. However, they would love to have the iPhone -- who wouldn't?

Oh please no... Sprint IMO is not worthy for the iPhone, not to mention there 4G network is not that much better than the current 3G networks. As this is only a rumor, I doubt that this is gonna happen.

Sprint's and Verizon's 3G networks are far superior to AT&T's. Of course, part of that is that there are so many people using it -- but Verizon has about the same if not more customers then AT&T and it's still far better.

Then again, might just be where I live -- who know's? But I never though AT&T was good enough for the iPhone. The only reason the original iPhone was not 3G was because AT&T was not ready. Then iPhone 3GS came along because AT&T then improved their network, although I don't know if that was nationwide. And it seems they will be the last of the big three to roll out a 4G network as well.

And just read the review of EVO 4G and you'll see WiMAX -- even right now -- is very fast. And don't let the name full you -- WiMAX will be upgraded, it will be improved and when it's fully rolled out -- probably will take 2-4 years -- LTE and WiMAX will both be very fast.

I cannot stand AT&T.

I actually am in the process of working on breaking contract and paying the reduced ETF so I can go on sprint to get the EVO 4G. BUT I don't like how bulky and plasticky designed that phone is along with the number of design flaws...but still very tempted.

I don't think Android is polished enough as the iPhone and so it is really the iPhone that has kept me with AT&T.

If the iPhone was to be sold on Sprint and the suprise kicker this year is that apple releases a sprint iPhone 4G model, I will not hesistate to go to sprint. AT&T is terrible; bang for the buck wise and performance wise.

Again, read the engadget review -- it will tell you a lot. I think Android is not as polished either, however the HTC Sense is very polished, very amazing. Just go into a Sprint store when it's released and try the EVO for yourself. HTC Sense GUI is a hate it or love it kinda thing. I love it.

No, not at all. The possibility of the iPhone going to Sprint is probably why they said they're not wed to WiMAX and could possibly go to LTE.

I see all four carriers going LTE in the near future and the iPhone being on them all. This will only mean good things.

Sprint did say that, however I really think WiMAX is here to stay. First off, LTE right now isn't testing that much faster then WiMAX. Of course, speeds will improve -- but they will improve for WiMAX as well. Second, Sprint doesn't need to do what everyone else does -- they have a CDMA network for their 3G and most carriers have GSM, does that hurt them?

I think Sprint was just trying to get people to stop bashing WiMAX. People for some reason think it's slow -- but from what I have heard, its very fast. Broadband type speeds. Here is a quote: "When we got a signal, it was amazing. Hell, it was straight-up epic -- full, desktop-caliber websites and apps like the Market loaded with honest-to-goodness WiFi-like speed, and we were able to make calls over CDMA at the same time ..." Engadget.com

And remember, WiMAX is being developed by Intel as well. Thats a pretty big name. However, if they did switch, from what I have learned is WiMAX and LTE is not that much different. But that will be years, three or six years. But just do some googling like I did and see. WiMAX and LTE can coexist.

And finally..I would love this. My wife would by the iPhone next year, and I'd probably by an Android. Just so we can compare (one with HTC Sense).

congestion relief

iPhone for Sprint would be nice. And Verizon too, please. Even those of us who stay on AT&T should see big benefits, as iPhone users spread to other carriers and the network becomes less congested.

Here where I live all the carriers are about equal in coverage/speed. I would jump to Sprint so fast if they had the iPhone. I would get way more minutes (with their Any Mobile, Any Time) way more texts (Unlimited vs 300) and comparable 3G data all for $21 less per month. Partially because of a discount difference (15% for AT&T vs 23% for Sprint) but mainly because Sprint is actually significantly cheaper if you have a smartphone.

I would make back the ETF in less than a year.
