Also at my local Apple store, the manager informed me that they do not have very many glossy mbp's because apparently apple said there was a defect with the glossy displays and their not shipping anymore to the store. Because my cousin wanted a glossy yesterday.
EXCELLENT!

As a glossy screen owner that makes me happy because it means Apple adknowledged the problem and should be fixing it. Good news! :apple:

BTW I ordered the 2.2 Glossy on the 11th and shipped from Shanghai on the 16th.

First Apple... First Post... First Dilemma

Ok guys... I am new to the world of Apple, and new to the world of macrumors! I dont know if it was good or bad reading this forum! Here is my dilemma: New MBP 2.2 Glossy Samsung. Just got it Monday (even a few days early). I was very excited. Opened it up... beautiful machine. No obvious defects or blemishes. Booted up my first mac for the first time. Gorgeous screen, then I noticed it- a dead pixel right next to the blue apple on the menu bar. I tried everything... researched every trick- thats how I found this forum. Now, reading through this thread, I think I have the yellow issue as well. Mine is a CTO for the hardrive. So, what do I do? The pixel annoys me, the yellow annoys me (i think or it is in my head). I called the Apple store and they said they could only swap the screen, but really recomended that I call for an exchange? How noticable is the yellow? I do not want a $400 dollar fine print slap on top of all of this for a return that they deem un-necessary? Sigh. This is a LOT of money to be unhappy...

OK. This is very very strange and I swear I'm not making this up. I posted earlier in this thread that I was seeing awful banding (much more so than a crappy Dell Latitude from work), especially in the green area of a color gradient image posted earlier.

Well, I come home today late from work, decide to fire up my MBP and check out the color gradient file one more time because I was contemplating returning the MBP altogether. To my surprise the gradient doesn't look as horrible anymore. It's actually comparable to the Dell Latitude, if not better (I can't tell because I didn't bring the Dell home). The thick line within the green area that went from left to right appears to be gone.

Has this happened to anyone else? I haven't downloaded 10.4.10 yet so it couldn't have been that. The only thing I did was switch to a different color profile that I downloaded off another thread. But I tried switching back to the original and the gradient still looks fine.

Weird? Let me know what you guys think. Now I'm really confused.

You need to run LCDTest 2.0

People are confused here with image I posted on the LCDTest gradient test. That was the image from screen capture done on my C2D non-LED screen using LCDTest 2.0. To test for gradient 6-bit dithering, you need you run the program on your own MBP and go through the "Color Gradients Verification".

I understand that. However, the image you provided was enough to show banding on my new SR MBP and others that I tested in the store. I downloaded LCDTest 2.0 just now and was able to get the same results.

However In doing so I've managed to figure out what might be the cause of the extreme banding issue and a work around it. I'm pretty happy about that. I'm dead tired right now so I'll post it tomorrow AM. Now if I can only figure out a work around for the slight yellowish tint towards the bottom then I'll be really happy.

Stay turned.

Just to add a note about my situation, I too have a glossy samsung screen and have the yellow at the bottom. Sat was my 14th day so popped into the Apple store where I got it (B'ham UK) and spoke with one of the geniuses who saw the problem straight away. He said it was best to just exchange it for another as i was still within the 14days and it'd save going the repair route. When I went to the checkout to swap it the guy there didn't even want to have a look to see the reason for himself and was just going to swap it over. Unfortunately they didn't have any of the glossies only matt so their going to give me a bell when they get some (mid to end of this week coming) and i can swap it then.

anyone else try this? Try installing windows vista and then try to look for the yellow tint, it seems to have less yellow tinting on windows vista. Also I noticed when I used the color calibrater in osx under system preference, at the end of calibrating the color I set it to 2.2 native white point and it seems to look alot better and hardly notice the yellow tinting. I exchanged my 2.2ghz for a 2.4ghz mbp for the longevity and readying for the leopard osx and I have the 9c67 lcd with no yellow tinting on the bottom but it does seem a bit but barely yellowish on the left side of the screen than the right side. But after calibrating its perfect! =D very happy.

not necessarily true, my cousin who bought a 2.4ghz macbook pro matte has a samsung 9c68 and it has no yellow tint either. Its more of a pick of luck I guess? But I've exchanged it 3 times so far, the very first mbp 2.2ghz I had was the LG 9c67 and it did have a very very noticable yellow tint (streak) right above the dock and looking at the color green in gradients it had a clear line running through looked horrible. But I exchanged it to another 2.2ghz mbp matte and it had a 9c67 Lg and was fine but just the left side seems a bit dimmer or barely yellow tint and I exchanged it for the 2.4ghz mbp matte now and its just perfect =D and its an LG 9c67 model too.

well i took mine in today for the yellowish tint and my spacebar squeaks so they ordered me a brand new one and it should come in tommorow. he said he could tell a slight tint and that if its not good to my eyes then apple will replace it. now how to transfer vista

My first Santa Rosa MBP that arrived had the yellow tint issue at the bottom of the screen. Sent it back and the replacement arrived today. The screen on this one is perfect. No yellowing, equal lighting, and no dead pixels. I'm very happy now, but I still hate that I always seem to have to send a laptop or two back before I get a good one with Apple.

Anyway, I've upgraded this to 4GB RAM, so with all that RAM and a perfect screen I'm loving this machine.

Returned my week 22 Samsung on Friday for a week 24 Samsung with the same yellow hue. Very, very frustrating. Especially when their week 22 LG on display is perfect. Thinking about returning the machine and using my old Dell till they work out some of these problems.

I'm really, really disappointed. :(

D'oh! Hope I don't end up like that but I could...

It's one thing when a company sends you a defective product. It's another when they send you a second with the exact same defect. How f*ing pathetic is that?!?!

well they like to try and make excuses for it trying to say thats what all lcd's are like but i just shot them down and made them aware of the fact that i own about 15 macs and none of my other laptops have this problem. they know there is a problem they just dont want to admit it. this will stay this way until there is a class action suit.

It just makes more sense from a business standpoint to admit a problem and treat customers right than to call them "crazy" and attempt to cover up an obvious flaw. My experience so far:

- Apple Store Manager, Biltmore - Phoenix: "Rea... *Begin fake patronizing confused look* ...lly?"

- AppleCare: "That's... odd."

- Apple Sales [Phone]: "Well that's the first I've heard of this..." At least they agreed to exchange it. :)

Is there some sort of paranoia at Apple that fuels this? Like if they admit something all of a sudden every Mac ever purchased will be sent back demanding a refund and the world will end?

This really bums me out. I was all set to by a 15" MBP with the LED screen. :( I hope they can address this with a firmware update. If not i'm getting a T61.

I have a big enough issue finding the time during the week to successfully operate my business. Now I have to find even "more" time to take care of my second faulty laptop.

That's my definition of "frustration". I guess I just picked a bad time to switch from PC to MAC.

i'm a 1st time switcher; and cancelled my MBP order, and am going to order a mac pro desktop -- no issues, is faster than heck - and if i need to (for presentation purposes) i'll get a used/refurbished macbook or powerbook.

If I didn't need a lappy, I'd do the same. :(

Samsung or LG?

So the consensus is that any yellow band at the bottom of the screen is bad.... but what about the entire screen having a brownish-yellow tint when viewed from side angles (ie 40 degrees or more from center)? I've heard other mention this, but is this a problem or not? I find it annoying because when working with people next to me, they are always like "why does everything look brown?" (SR MBP 15" glossy samsung lcd btw)

Samsung or LG?

Sorry, I should have said that the second SR MBP I got, that doesn't have a problem, has the LG screen. I didn't bother to check what screen the first one had but it must have been Samsung as it was definitely yellow.

This LG screen is amazing. Perfect back-lighting, perfect colour, completely clear, and much better viewing angles. I'm glad I returned the first one as this one is far superior.

Mr. Fusion you live in Phoenix and went to the Biltmore store too? Do not lol, I repeat do not go to that store again, give Chandler a try if possible. Hmmm, so I am not the only one got the bad experience from that store, atleast you got lucky and he did something for you.

I just received my MBP about an hour ago. With a glossy Samsung screen (9C68) and it's perfect. The colors are a little bit warm, but it's even over the entire screen, so there is no 1/3rd part that is yellow and I haven't spotted any dead or stuck pixels. With some calibration it will be the best laptop screen I have seen. Compared to my old iBook it's a major improvement.

Even compared to my 22" Acer desktop monitor (which was stolen this morning) at work it looks very good...:D
