I'm pretty sure it's an isolated issue rather than an issue with the coating process. DLC is widely used on knives and watches (contrary to what Archer1440 said above), and this isn't the norm. If it was a widespread issue, we would have heard about it by now. I wear my 42mm Black Stainless every day in a production environment. I haven't had any major bangs, but plenty of scrapes and minor bangs. No peeling or wear issues yet (since 5/14).

I hope you get your replacement quickly.

I really am hoping that it is.

I have two watches which are DLC coated and this is the first time that I have experienced such a thing.

I am still waiting for Apple to have me send in my band. I'll take some photos to see if there was a bit of change from last week's peeling.

In terms of getting a replacement, I got a replacement Space Black (they replaced the whole watch) in under 1 week as mine had a fault - it was making a popping sound when the display sound when the display turned on.

I went to a store and they told me that ringing Applecare would be the fastest option. The genius put notes about the issue against the watch when I was at the Apple store. Basically, I went to the store on a Monday Morning, and called Applecare in the afternoon. The faulty watch was picked up on Wednesday and the replacement shipped on the same day - it was delivered to me on Friday - a great turnaround if you ask me. The replacement was shipped to me locally from Sydney - I am in Sydney, Australia.

When I was on the phone talking to Applecare, they told me to ignore the delivery window on the order (it initially said 2-3 weeks) as then replacement would ship a lot sooner. It shipped in 2 days.

Not peeling as such but the strap has a discolouration flaw in one of the non-removable links. Great service from Apple so far though - with having AppleCare+ they are sending a new one out and doing a courier swap. Hopefully in the same 2 days as others have experienced.

You'll have to let us know if you get that retail boxed space black link that we saw on one of the other threads. Maybe post the part number that's on the box? :)

Ah, crap. Wish they'd get their act together and quit doing that. (a little annoying to switch watches needlessly), or are they giving you the option of sending back the new watch body with your original band?

No choice - I asked if they could just replace the band as I can use my sport strap in the meantime and they said that wasn't an option. I have seen the photos of the black link bracelet in a box so that's obviously not necessarily the case but possibly the way they handle UK/EU replacements.

I'm guessing the reason being that there continues to be too much retail demand, so they're pulling from retail stock to service warranty needs. Eventually things should subside a bit and they should have separate SKU's for the SB watch and band.

Not sure if anyone is still watching this thread, but I've had the same issue with my Space Black Link Bracelet. I live in Singapore, where we don't have official Apple retail stores (yet), so I had to bring it to an authorized service provider, who told me that they couldn't do anything about it. That was a few months ago, and now I'm chatting w/ Apple online support to see if I can get a different result... IMG_0656.JPG

To close out my case, Apple customer service agreed to send me a new replacement band, and they're not even asking me to send back my old one, so I can keep it as a spare. Happy customer here.

Great outcome for you! Glad they got that sorted. My new band after months, has been great with no more wear at all. Also very surprisingly scratch resistant. Not a single scratch just yet even though I've hit it on a few things already.

Well, that's good to hear since I'm eyeing this model for my next Watch.

I'm actually on my third band currently and it is still wearing in the exact same spot. The only thing I can think of is that it continues to happen where my wrist touches my desk. Last time I was at the Apple Store getting the watch itself looked at, I mentioned the band losing the coating and they just added another one to the work order and replaced it. That said, I would like it to not happen at all but at least they have replaced it. Probably go in to see about a new one in a couple weeks.

Same issue here. No problem getting a replacement from Apple, but now my replacement is wearing in the same place (I think from where the band touches the desk). I adjusted the links so the ones wearing can be swapped out. But I'm pretty disappointed that this is happening on an expensive band.
