Finally some bad press about Apple software. It’s all crumbling apart, macOS, iOS, bugs over bugs, broken features that once used to work, features implemented that were always buggy and not working properly.

Finally. Hopefully they read this comments.

Stage Manager on macOS hasn’t been working so well for me. For one, it mainly makes sense if you keep apps to a very small window, but on the limited screen real estate of a MacBook Pro, I virtually never do that, so I always have the sidebar covered by the app window. Seems like it would work better on a 5K display. Secondly, I noticed that when opening a new document in Pages or anything that takes a few seconds to load, Stage Manager thinks Pages has closed and reloads a different app you have open for a couple seconds while the document opens, then goes back to Pages. It’s really annoying. I’m not sure if I’ll keep using this feature at the moment.
Haven't turned it on yet....updated to Venturna for bug fixes....Apple...to soon

Weird. That's the exact model I have and the setting works for me. I assume cycling Stage Manager off and back on doesn't help?
Yea. So I created a new user account just to see if it works, and it does. I can hover to the left and it slides in. Now just to determine what causes it to not appear on my account.

I'd love to see a YouTube video where someone records their screen while productively using the Stage Manager. And I'm not sarcastic, because it's really hard to see the utility while just playing around with it.

I gave it a go today, it just tripped me up more than anything while working. It's just not there yet, needs more TLC. I turned it off as it was just annoying to be completely honest.

I think the best case scenario will be that Stage Manager improves over time (obviously) or it evolves into the rumoured “limited version of macOS” — not as a separate OS, but a more Mac-like desktop experience option for those who want it. One can dream… lol.
It would be kind of hilarious if it ended up being, in the Year of Our Lord 2022 (or 2023-4) pretty much like the extremely-maligned Windows 8 except to great acclaim.

The „Tim Cook“ edition of Apple breaks with rules of simplicity that led Apple to its success. Simplicity:
- Reduced set of features, but super easy to use „just works“ stage manager breaks with simplicity
- Reduced set of models, just look at dozens of iPad, iPad Pro, iPad Air models.

With stage manager Apple tries to turn the iPad into a MBP and fails.

be quite easy

safari browsing here or Apollo app/ twitter or YouTube by the side. it's certainly not as smooth as like on the Mac but I would still say it's better than just using spilt screen for certain tasks. I certainly don't think it will be used that often for most but if you want to use spilt screen or more it would still be useful.

When the AR headset is introduced and positioned as a work environment peripheral instead of gaming goggles, this feature will make much more sense.

Just move Dock to the left side and it can do things better. They should‘ve made Dock on iPadOS available on the left or right side so they wouldn’t waste time on developing Stage Manager.

Recently?

This has been going on for at least 8 years. Nearly the entire time that Tim Cook has been in charge.
What? Apple has released their best Macs in a LONG LONG time.

I keep saying Apple can’t focus on more than one thing. Macs have been home runs since M1. Everything else stalled. Where before it was Mac that was stalled.

I mean, if you've been paying attention, you'd see that Apple's sharp decline in quality that began around 5 years ago parallels their change in hiring practices. This isn't terribly surprising either. Is it difficult to imagine when "best person for the job" is replaced by "which checkboxes does this person tick" creates a decline in quality? That doesn't surprise anyone.
Apple suffered before then. I remember back in 2013 there were talks about the trash can Mac Pro….on this site….“Never buy a Rev A apple product, expect nothing but issues”

I dunno, seems to work just fine for me. It's probably better suited to a large screen like on the iPad 12.9, but I don't seem to have the horrible experience that is prompting to post a jeremiad. Nice to switch between apps without using Cmd-tab when using a keyboard. One can take it or leave it, except the baby seems to be thrown out with the bathwater with this one.

Perhaps it's because I'm not a tech guy who has been spoon-clanging for macOS to be an iPad, which is to say, to have the *windowing* system on the iPad to such a degree as to be a carbon copy of it. But for what? "Multi-tasking" is not a thing that really exists in any meaningful way, what with study after study showing that, no, humans really can't do more than two things at once well. But I suppose this is where the fanciful notion of a "power user" comes in because everyone will claim to be the exception to the rule and yes, I *do* need multiple windows all over the place and anything less than that is abject failure. Hardly, but one is hard-pressed to get that point across to aforementioned "power users" for whom nothing less is an admittance of being a pathetic, ordinary user who dares to breathe the same air.

Good thing it's not on be default and can be ignored.

I am at the point where I will do without Apple hardware just to get reliable software. Who would have ever thought that Windows > Mac and Android > IOS.
I just don’t want to change back to android because all the privacy issues. Every app asks you to give away everything just to be able to use them. For example, a couple months ago apple made mandatory for every app to be able to delete the account permanently directly from the app. Before you would have to find the option if there was one online and would need to go to the website to delete it

Been testing on the Mac, and frankly this is great for of all of us who work on one screen mostly. Seems like a very sensible way to organize your working windows on 'app sets'

Just scrap this feature and start over for 17.0. The main issue is that they're trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. This feature works pretty well on macOS. But iPad needs a different approach for multitasking, and the whole interface in general honestly.

i’d like to ask two questions…
#1: where on earth is your source for this? Because I’ve been searching, and… Nothing.
#2: why would you even think this slightly to be true? Software development is software development, no matter where it’s taking place
I'd like to reply to #2 based on my own personal experience. More than 10 years ago I was working for a small software consulting company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our development team was in India. Our company was hired by a large tech company named after a piece of fruit. Our assignment was to develop software for internal business reporting.

I quickly learned that in order to have even a chance at success, I had to speak to the development team in the early morning to find out what they had completed and delivered during their day, and then again in the evening to guide them on what needed to be done during their day. In betweeen, I was at the client.

Much happened, and mistakes were made by me, by the development team, and by some client personnel (in my opinion). The project stumbled but was ultimately completed. Having the development team located halfway around the world certainly made my job harder and, I believe, was one of the main causes of our difficulties. I think our performance would have been better had I been able to directly communicate with the team during the workday.

I understand that not all software projects are split like this, so this is not meant to be a total condemnation of offshore software development. But this was one arrangement that did not work well, at least for those of us involved.

Ironically, my life would have been better had I been able to WFH, and thereby hopefully take some breaks during the day, but I can't say whether that would have improved the outcome.
