Is the space black Milanese loop worth the premium price of $800 over a space grey sport AW3??
Again, it’s personal preference. I have the SBSS S3 Milanese loop and believe it’s worth it but, I wouldn’t buy it if there were budgetary concerns. Buy what you like and can afford.

I know and I have both a AW3 SBSS w Milanese and an Nike Plus Space Gray, but will prob return the $800 SB one bc of the huge premium difference between the two and the fact that it seems that Apple will continue releasing a new one each year.

Comeping back at you, it's interesting to hear another viewpoint. If you don't mind saying, where are you approximately in age? I'm in the 55-60 band, which I know affects my perspectives.

I agree that Health is a disorganized mess with too many potential inputs, but right now I'm happy to just be collect the data and bundling it in one place. I also agree that there are many wearables that do parts of what the AW does better. My take on the field, having owned or used a number of them, is that given my activist and health interests, the AW is for me the best single device answer. And, having a lifetime history of various cardiac irregularities, the heart study is of special interest.

I am getting a little laugh thinking of the current thread about Otterbox cases scratching phones and people saying "I don't use a case and I have never dropped a phone." I guess the AW is a good way to make that happen. :D

I'm 33. The AW is a jack of all trades for me. I have been wearing the Series 3 every day since getting it, which is came as a surprise for me as this wasn't the plan. My launch AW was not touched for a year before that, despite having it since launch.

I really do want to see the AW evolve and to incorporate key features it lacks in comparison to the Garmins. But I think that is asking for a lot and am rather pessimistic that will happen. Perhaps when I am older and less serious about my running, it may be an option. But who knows what tech will be like by then! Exciting times for sure!

No matter what kind of tech you buy it will always be replaced the next year. You have to determine what meets your current and future needs and what you can afford. I wore my SS S0 2.5 yrs and now with cellular capability which provides some degree of future proofing, will wear this one for at least 3 yrs. So, the cost spread over 3 yrs is less than a new watch every yr.

It will be interesting. The AW reminds me of the wristwatch that Dick Tracy, the 1960s comic strip detective, wore. I remember Maxwell Smart talking on his shoe phone. There are iPads in Star Trek The Next Generation, 15 or 20 years ahead of Steve Jobs' version. So, look around. Things that are only imaginary may become real. Exciting for sure.

Totally! For now, I am content with the gadgets we have. But always looking forward to the next reveal. I have high hopes for Series 4 and 5 with further health integration, but that is only really going to be worthwhile if the health app can be sorted out.

My dream is 'one app to rule them all'! haha

I bought the SS version of the AW3 while my wife got the aluminum. We've never had Apple watches before so we wanted to try them both.
I've been wearing the SS AW3 for about 5 days now and tried on my wife's aluminum for the first time.
Wow, it is like wearing nothing but air. The SS version is extremely heavy compared the the aluminum.

Then I started to research the differences between the two. I read that the screen brightnesss is different so, I live in FL so we have plenty of sun, I took them both outside and there is definitely a noticeable difference. The ion-x glass is brighter.

So I was wondering what is the main drivers for people buying the SS version?
  • Sapphire glass is stronger? I put a screen protector on the ion-x which is invisible. Watch manufacturers use sapphire glass because the watches are suppose to last 5, 10 years. The AW3 will be obsolete in 1-2 years. The ion-x glass is also more shatter resistant than sapphire.
  • Weight - The SS version is almost twice as heavy - it's night and day when trying them on - crazy.
  • Cost - The SS is $240 more
Am I missing something big? The SS is shiny while aluminum is matte? I'd prefer matte, the gloss looks girly in my opinion but everyone is different. I thought there were bigger differences that justified the price increase, I should have done more research.
However, I am still within my 2 week return window.

For me, it came down to three things:

1) I prefer the weighty feeling of the stainless steel. The aluminum felt too light for me, whilst the steel reminds me of my former normal watch that I used to wear

2) Sapphire glass is significantly more scratch resistant. For something I plan on wearing on my wrist, I worry about potentially breaking it and I want to look new for a long time. I’m less likely to care for it the way I do my iPhone

3) The Space Black SS model is absolutely gorgeous. Stunning. The best looking finish of the lot in my opinion. I fell in love with instantly. I love the way it matches the stainless steel band of my space grey iPhone X, and I really I love the way the OLED display melts into the rest of the watch. If you haven’t seen one in person, I would recommend checking it out.

Is it *worth* the extra money? Well, maybe not for everyone, especially if you plan on replacing your Apple Watch annually, but I seriously prefer the aesthetics of the stainless steel model and I care about the way my watch looks more than I do, say, my iPhone or laptop.

Love my space black stainless steel, 10/10 would re-buy every time. But it’s not for everybody. Thankfully, we have choices!

I agree, but for now I am putting all my eggs (data) in one basket (Apple). When I look at Apple, I no longer see a computer company (which is fine). I see a technology-as-it-affects-lifestyle company. Things like the various health interests and the autonomous vehicle program speak of a much wider vision. Assuming they can stay the course and sort out their priorities. Things seem fuzzy, unfocused, right now, which could just be the natural process of sorting things out.

Wow, pretty meta for a thread on SS vs AL...

I prefer the look of the Stainless – and have had both since launch and upgraded annually – but currently have the aluminum S3 now. The LTE has missed the mark for me in terms of cost of cellular service, signal strength and battery the using LTE and GPS. I've wanted to use it to replace my phone for daily runs, but it's not cutting it at this point.

I'm hoping it's a bit like the iPad 3, out the door before it was quite ready with Series 4 being the right mix. At that point I'll reevaluate, and maybe finally keep two in rotation.

I expected the LTE concerns to be a problem the first year, but that will become more refined with carriers communicating with Apple and have a more set plans for 2018. I'm sure the experience will be a lot more streamlined with locked in prices that can might be more affordable to tracked for Apple Watch users to upgrade to the LTE version.

I do think carriers should continue to offer a 90 day free trial at minimum to see if the user actually would want the service or not.

Haha, that's okay! It's all good information :) TBH, the Health app hasn't worked for me since 2015. Too many issues to list, but very annoying when running + walking distance don't add up, workouts don't get added and sometimes double runs, do.

But to keep things relevant here, I am enjoying my SS SB AW. Matches my SG iPhone X perfectly! :)

No? Yes? It's totally subjective. Go look at both and make up your own mind. Same goes for your questions about LTE being worth it. Only you can answer that for yourself.

Very profound. Lol.

But, so true. So many people come on these forums asking what should I do when it’s totally up to them to assess their needs and act accordingly.

Make sure you pay attention to the order that the Health app is drawing information for the various measures. When I’ve gotten new devices, I’ve had to go in and manually tell it to take the information from my new Apple Watch first, before considering my iPhone info, for example. Once I did that, though, no problems.

Good to know. I'm seeing different info on my watch and app on iPhone. I guess it's because what your describing.

Yeah, that’s what I experienced, too, when I got a new watch. And when I got my new phone before that. Also, I believe I had to go in there and mess with the data sources for various measures individually... heart rate, exercise minutes, etc... to tell it basically to ALWAYS go with what my watch says.

I just experienced 2 freak out moments today in which I was walking down the hallway in my house swinging my arms and smacked my AW3 SS into the wall. My heart sunk both times. I immediately inspected my watch for damages and luckily there were no scratches or scuffs.

And at that point when you're going to inspect the watch after the incident, is when you really appreciate the Sapphire display. And that's why I think it's so important that a display that small is protected when it matters, because when the display is scratched, you have to stare at it all the time.

If you had the aluminium version it would likely look like it had been run through a belt sander if you read many online comments. I think my gold aluminium version was accidentally fitted with a sapphire display judging by all the wall brushing and bangs I’ve given it.

I have two series 3 series 2 watches, a Nike +, rose gold and the ceramic edition. I wore the first two watches to work all the time and getting in and out of my card, the seatbelt buckle would bang against the display on whatever watch I was wearing. Not one mark on either of them. Happened once or twice on the ceramic edition as well and of course it was perfect.

Now I have three series 3, a silver aluminum, Nike + and the SS. Just accidentally bumped the face of the aluminum display right into the corner of my MBP and the display is still perfect. I expected to see a micro scratch at least but there is nothing. I swear these displays are tougher then people say they are.

I had the aluminum version before returning it for the SS. On day 5 with the aluminum I accidentally banged a metal door. Sure enough there was a scratch right in the top left quadrant. It drove me crazy. Every time I looked at the watch I immediately focused on the scratch. You do not want to experience this level of suffering. If you can, buy SS and sapphire.
