I said this after the announcement about the regular iPhone 17. Yes, I am something of a fortune teller ;)
Or just thinking like a regular Joe: why pay more for less (ie Air) or pay a lot more for only slightly more (ie Pro). Nothing to fault on the hardware side. Maybe the pettiness of including usb2 speeds over usbc. But nothing major that might hold anyone back who is in an Apple Store. I personally would have like a mini version though….

Would anyone recommend going from 14 pro to 17 base? Concerned about reports re 17 pro/case, etc. Main use is camera though, have a youngin’ to take pics of.

Should note I do have a canon r50 for more official photos.

Nah, 14 Pro sensor is still better than 17.

The people who should upgrade are the XR/11/12 users.

Absolutely, since you have a better camera to use when needed.

> Unexpected demand?

So after all these years as a market leader in producing phones, this got past the leadership at Apple? Talk about an own goal.

Or Apple nerf'd store inventory intentionally, to push their new, questionable and over priced Air. Which is clearly not selling as much as they were expecting.

Now the base phone has a 3 week production delay, with customers unable to walk into an Apple store and buy a base phone. Talk about a failure of a release.

I considered upgrading from my 16 Pro just for the weight. Aside from the cameras there are several other improvements, also the 17 does have a better camera on the front.

To me it felt like Apple had marginalized the standard iPhone by making it "The BASE iPhone" whether on purpose or not was a bad idea. This year's iPhone looks like a far better way go. Giving "The iPhone" all of the best features and making it the best choice for most people and by differentiating the Pro and other phones by adding the specific features to the other phones for how they are positioned and aimed at , and not by snipping features from "The iPhone".

100% they did. If you watched the video Apple made about "what iPhone version to choose", they basically ignored the iPhone 17 and only pushed the Air and Pro. The fix was in at the start, and now their Magpie phone (the Air with shiny bits) isn't selling, as people switch to the better valued one.

Every year Apple pushed the marketing slogan about how their newest phone was so thin, well the 17 is thin enough for most. And that's showing in the demand.

It's a really good deal this time around. I'd consider one myself if they had a 1TB Version. The ugliness and lack of a black color for the Pro's also make the regular iPhone more enticing this year.

The base 17 is one of the best iPhones ever made in terms of price/features.

The 17 Pro models are the ugliest iPhones ever made. Even, having skipped gray and dark colors are one of Apple’s dumbest decision in years.

Did you imagine an orange MacBook Pro or iPad Pro? Absurd.

Subjective. A lot of people love Orange as a colour. It's okay that you don't. The phone is still beautiful for many.

Good to hear.

Finally we’re getting back to the iPhone being the default option, rather than the Pro being the default option.
Tim Apple will ensure that this gets corrected in less than one calendar year.

A bit of a strange year for iPhone releases - the iPhone 16e now feels a bit out of place compared to the rest of the lineup and only $200 less than the base model iPhone which is almost nothing spread out over 36 months for most people. In the years prior the iPhone SE was a significantly different type of device in where you could argue targets a demographic that prefers the simplicity of a home button compared to the gestures most of us are already used to.

Bring back the Mini at $599! Do it TIM!

I think he's talking about the structure of the phone. The orange color is just icing on the cake to make the Pro look even worse.

Oh yes a copper orange MacBook Pro would be lovely 😃

I went to the Apple Store this afternoon to play with the new shinies, and...dang, was it tempting to trade in my 15PM for that base 17. Lighter, faster, better battery life than when my 15PM was new...

Tested the cameras, and other than the zoom that 17 took pics as good as or better than my 15 PM did. Even the digital zoom wasn't horrible.

The Air was...well, it was light and thin. In a world where it had that ultra-wide camera for macro photography, I could see myself being tempted. Alas, I require that macro capability so it was a no-go.

The Pro and Pro Max were, of course, excellent as well. I love that orange color even though I KNOW it's just ugly, but I can't help it!

But that base 17...dang. Next year I think I'll definitely be going base 18 model without hesitation. Assuming I don't give into the urge and just make the swap in a few months.

Apple doesn't have single 256 iPhone 17, in green, blue, white or black, available in Australia. Only 1 purple one. With 3rd party retailers having no stock either. And there's a 3 week wait.

And of course there’s plenty of iPhone Air stock. 😭

Either Apple is taking the Rolex distribution approach, intentionally restricting a product to push another, or they've completely dropped the ball.

Switzerland didn't have any base models (or Pro Maxes) at all. I would have bought that purple one :)

If Apple sees its margins shrink due to a higher share of the base model in sales, they'll probably return to their previous practice and make the base model less attractive again.

Personally I think the 13 Mini was the best phone ever for its time and don't understand why it didn't find its audience. I'm sad that they no longer have a phone below 6 inches screen size. But I need to upgrade this year to get some of the newer tech. 😩 Not entirely happy though.

The base 17 model is now a perfect phone. Think the only reason to buy a Pro is to have better camera (zoom lens) and the Pro Max for bigger screen and better camera (zoom). Otherwise I think the normal 17 is the phone to buy. Will easily recommend this one. The sage color is also nice. Blue could have been a bit brighter.
I agree with you. It makes sense why Apple got rid of the larger regular iPhone to entice those that want a larger screen to jump to the Pro Max. It makes a bit easier too for consumers in terms of choice. Though the price is a big jump to go from the base iPhone 17 to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Looks like Apple is intentionally doing it to force consumers to buy the Air. At $US200 extra, people aren’t falling for the marketing.

It is a nice looking phone, but it's not noticeably heavier than the base model. Plus, because it has quite a large screen, you have to hold your hand quite wide to get a grip, so you don't really notice the thinness, either.

It's at its best when you hold it at arms length perpendicular to your body, and use another phone to take a picture of it 😁

I exaggerate of course - it is the nicest looking of the new phones, but I suspect that loses its impact after a few months.
