Kept trying to remember how I felt after just 10 episodes of TNG but I'm not sure I remember.

That comparison methodology is tough to get much from unfortunately.

The pacing of the shows and what they are trying to cover in a given amount of time is totally off.

By 10 episodes of Picard you need to compare it to an entire season of TNG, if not two...if it’s even possible really?

I don’t even know how to compare the two shows head to head because they broke away and did the whole continuous
storyline thing and we are leapfrogging all over the galaxy in every episode....covering distances and concepts at a breakneck speed that seemed almost impossible in the TNG era.

Basically they’ve copied the concept of every other mainstream science-fiction effort of the modern day, which is probably where my frustration starts. I didn’t need another “exact same as everything else“ show that just happens to look a little bit like Star Trek

One big difference between Discovery and Picard vs TNG and the others is the way stories are written.
The older series tended toward episodic stories - one or two episodes. Modern story lines in television are arc based - where there are multiple plots, side stories and such that span the length of a season, or more.

I find the newer shows are intriguing to me. And I really worked at not comparing the old shows with the new ones. That's a challenge.

I think most of the Trek franchises took a season or two to find themselves and really get the characters going. Thought Picard did a decent job on that with just 10 episodes. Seems like a lot of people are just not giving it a fair chance.

Season 1 of TNG had 25 episodes to get their stuff together.

Yes, season one of TNG was not so great. There's were some things I wasn't crazy about with Picard but there were many parts that I loved. I'd absolutely subscribe again in the fall if/when they're able to make season two.

I think I would be more on board with the arc storytelling if we still had 20+ episodes for season.

With arcs on such short seasons, with something as potentially deep as Star Trek, way too much is happening way too quickly with huge gaps in knowledge and understanding in the middle of everything. It just feels like it jumps all over the place without us really get a sense to know who everyone is and all the ins and outs of the different storylines.

The crazy irony of the arc storytelling thing is that back in the Day of TNG the writers had to fight tooth and nail to get any arcs allowed in a time when they actually had the long length of seasons to do it well…

Now we have the complete opposite problem of seasons that are 1/3 the length and the entire thing as an arc with absolutely no self-contained episodes whatsoever!

I got a month of CBS AC for free (picked the free no commercial version instead of the free with limited commercials;)), so I’ve started Picard, first 2 episodes. I’ll also watch S2 of Discovery, although I was disenchanted with it when I started S2 during it’s premiere.

There are several pages of this thread I’ve skipped to avoid spoilers.

My initial impression is not that good. After getting over the shock of just how old Picard is, and how strange Data looks even if it is a dream, (as in Androids get old and look just like elderly humans) ;), I’m finding the setup to be a bit complicated, but my real complaint is the dialog, instead of plain speak, a lot of complex descriptions. I understand what’s going on, but the description of the secret a Romulan death squad and how they covered up a crime scene, almost made my eyes glaze over.

I can last through 10 episodes and hopefully, I’ll adjust and grow to like it. :D

My suggestion, just stay out of this thread, reddit, or anywhere else online and just make your own judgment. For every person who didn't like the series, you'll find the exact opposite as well. Set your expectations to zero and see where you come out at the end.

I guess to each their own. Really didn't have a lot of expectations so I can't say it missed the mark for me. I enjoyed it quite a bit! Kept trying to remember how I felt after just 10 episodes of TNG but I'm not sure I remember. I do remember that I was having a hard time not comparing TNG to TOS. That's kind of how I went into watching Picard was trying NOT to compare it to anything.

Same here. I think I've seen far too many people profess their dislike because it's nothing like TNG. I'm sorry their expectation weren't met but this really shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone as Patrick Stewart himself said he wouldn't have done it if it was just a reboot/revisit of that show.

FWIW, I rather enjoyed it quite a lot. It's far from perfect and I'm not going to micro-analyze it to death, just know how I felt after watching the individual episodes and the series as a whole--couldn't wait to see next week's episode and very much looking forward to see where it goes next season.

No worries, I’m not usually swayed by opinions for content I watch. I’ve been known to figurously defend titles that I like, that are significantly critiqued. With something like any Star Trek or Star Wars title, I really want it to be good, but so often am disappointed. 😢

The last two movies the TNG crew did "felt" like TNG look/situation-wise but the stories were absolutely terrible. I kind of like that they tried something radically different. I still do want more cameos of the OG crew. I'm especially dying to see what they would do with Worf.

SPOILER ALERT:

I understand why Riker was in the Captain’s chair on the Starfleet armada considering the earlier episode but could you imagine if it had been Worf in command? 😁

When he showed up in First Contact similarly that was so great!

I’ve disliked all of the STNG movies and liked the first two JJ Abrams ST movies. The third one sucked.

Probably my second favorite amongst all Trek movies

Lets see, reboot films don't count (not Trek movies but Trek inspired action movies).

1. 1st contact
2. Wrath of Khan
3. Insurrection
4. The undiscovered country
5. Voyage home (for the comedy factor)
6. Search for Mr Spock
7. Nemesis
8. Generations
9. Final Frontier
∞ The Motion Picture (was boring when it was an episode in TOS "The Changeling")

You didn’t even like First Contact?
Actually it’s been a long time since I watched First Contact so I’m just going with my lingering impression. I never like the pacing of the films as compared to the TV show, and this movie includes time travel which can be hit and miss with me anyway. :)

Funny you mention pacing - as you can tell above from my other comments, that is a huge issue I have with Picard.

@Bug-Creator Fun exercise on movies - here’s my list I think

1. First Contact
2. Undiscovered Country
3. Wrath of Khan
4. Voyage Home
5. Generations
6. Search for Spock
7. Nemesis
8. Insurrection, FF & TMP, in no particular ordeR. All of them, for me, were truly hot garbage.

I’ll join in. I actually don’t hate the reboot either so I’ll slide those in where I’d include them with the original 2 sets:

1. 1st Contact
2. Wrath of Khan
3. Voyage Home
Star Trek
4. The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek Beyond
5. Search for Mr Spock
Star Trek Into Darkness
6. Generations
7. Insurrection
8. Nemesis
9. Final Frontier
10. The Motion Picture (was boring when it was an episode in TOS "The Changeling")

And I’ll agree with @turbineseaplane about the last 4 on my the list...wouldn’t be upset if I never saw a minute of them ever again. To be honest though, my list could just end with Search for Spock.

Yeah my list could end right around Spock or generations there also. It falls off quick after the top 3 or 4

I haven’t been able to watch TMP or FF again unless I’m totally drunk or stoned or something
