I think they will just take all the leftover U2 ipods and rebrand them "Darth Maul" iPods.

I don't like the idea that iPods will be treated like Pez dispensers, with versions for every theme that somebody might want to sell or buy. It's another way to link the product to popular culture, but it also has the feel of a fad that will cheapen their image in the long run.

Hilarious. You owe me a new keyboard!

This kind of reminds of the Star Wars electric guitars you can get. My buddies and I always joke that playing that guitar would take away any advantage getting chicks that playing guitar gives you.

The existance of a Star Wars iPod really means nothing to me.

iPods are too expensive to be bought as fashionista statements. I see the shuffles maybe, as gifts, but full blown regular iPods are just too darn expensive.

I don't think Apple is "selling out" by offering special edition and theme iPods, rather, I'd say they're selling up. More iPods=more marketshare - it's not like the hardware would be different. Besides, folks have come up with a thousand ways to hack and iPod to make it do all sorts of stuff, why shouldn't Apple cash in on the nerd market?

All that being said, I absolutely despise Skittles. They make me sick to my stomach - but for a chance of winning a SW iPod, they could become my favorite candy for a month or so.

I'd like a Death Star iPod: the outer circle of the clickwheel would have the same laser emitters as on the real Death Star, and it could blast things in the same manner. "You may fire when ready..." :D :p

Apple actually has been doing special ipods for a while. Most people have not heard of them though because they are so rare. For example, a student of mine was a part of the USC football team. They all got ipods in USC colors from Apple.

u2 on tour

U2 just arrived in town. Booked GM Place for a few weeks to prepare for US Tour. Maybe Apple thinks U2 ipod still has lots of life left.

Star Whores

I hated the new episodes, don't sell out to these clowns apple. I want a apple themed ipod, keep your **** clean.

Whats next a black iPod with in large friendly letters 'Don't Panic' on it???

I'd pay for a h2g2 themed iPod. I'd like something that has Don't Panic on the front, maybe a greenish casing (or maybe not), Douglas Adams sig (and maybe some sort of tribute/honorarium) on the back, and have all the icons and whatnot on the screen themed with h2g2 stuff. Also toss in a certificate to d/l all of the radio dramas (original series', the tertiary phase, and the upcoming final series) and the new movie soundtrack as a package for a big discount, like 50% off or something.

Another idea would be to make a h2g2 package that just put a Douglas Adams sig on the back of a regular iPod (your choice of model) along with some sort of tribute text, and include a nice leather case that says Don't Panic on the outside, and also the coupon for free/discounted download package mentioned above. Oh, also include some sort of code or something to let you download and install a h2g2 UI 'skin'.

I'd buy that, especially if it was a 30gb color model.

Rob

Eventually, 40gb iPods will be commoditized to the point that they will retail for $39. Perhaps in 2 years time? Only then could I see themed iPods being sold at your local supermarket. Eventually, shuffles would cost $2 and be included inside cereal boxes and other special promotions. You can pick up an electronic sports watch for $5. You'll be able to pick up a 10 GB ipod for $4-$10 in the near future.

please Apple, don't associate yourself with this Star Wars crap..!

vSpacken

You're right, apple associate yourself with really good cinema, like .."Old School", I think at least 5 people saw that movie.

To all of you guys who knocked Ep I-II, can we at least wait until some of us have seen III before we knock it? I agree that I and II were not as good as the Original Triology, but I did like them, as did others. I have read that they took extreme pains to make this a satisfying conclusion to the saga and that the actors recognized the inequities of the acting in the first two. Now I know that it is their job to say this, but the new trailer does look really cool. As far as the iPods go, Jobs and Lucas go way back, and if the rumor is true, it is an extremely limited number, so I think it is a good idea, but that is just my two cents... :D

eBay prediction?

IF this is true - probably a sorta big "IF".....

How much would a 1 of 100 limited edition go for on eBay? Knowing the high percentage of 'US' out there.... I bet it will be way overpriced....

Irie Jedi

Just hope I'm not to 'irie' once the bidding begins! :p

According to Star Wars fan-site RebelScum, Skittles will be giving away 100 Star Wars Themed iPods as part of a Star Wars promotion starting on April 2, 2005.

Apple has had a few official cross promotion iPod specials in the past with celebrity signed iPods and the still offered Black U2 iPod.

No details on the case-design of the Star Wars Themed iPods or if Apple is producing these custom iPods. Rebel Scum also posted a scan of a game piece.

I like Star Wars and all, but it is geeky.

I don't think it would be the best idea for Apple to align themselves with Star Wars, since the company has this "cool" persona about it.

Hopefully it's just a repackaged iPod.

I just find it hilarious that this thread for some has turned into an argument of why Mac/iPod geeks think they're "cooler" than Star Wars geeks. :p So what if they want to give away a Star Wars themed iPod? It's certainly nothing to get your shorts all bunched up over. If you hate Star Wars, then just don't enter the contest then. Some people obviously need to just lighten up...

I'm a Mac/iPod AND a Star Wars geek. What does that make me? :( Omigod. I also love Star Trek, especially TNG and Enterprise.
Oh god, I realize I am a super-geek. Eek.

Hey!

I love PEZ! Besides, its not like this is some company, this is Apple! Star Wars Themed could mean a bagillion things; simple engraving, cool iPod case. What a bunch of Debbie Downers...waa Waaah.

No kidding, half the people like it, the other half are calling people names. Get off your high horses, maybe Star Wars isn't your thing, but if they offered a WWE (or whatever they call themselfs these days) I think we all know what side of the fence (or maybe closet) you would end up on. So stop being Negative Nancy's. :p

nPod.....if Apple does this, I'll hang my head in shame till the iPod is no more.
