I don't know what WWDC keynote you were watching, but all Forstall talked about were passes taken from pre-existing apps. Nowhere did he ever talk about manually adding in your own passes by taking pictures of them or whatever.

I never said that. I only said that Passbook was demo'd at WWDC.

I really want passbook to succeed since I think it's an incredible idea but I think a lot of the less tech savy people are just never going to use it. They are going to be lost and confused. Heck I've had every iphone, figured out how to hook up three monitors to my computer can do a little VBA scripting and even I was like ??? I don't get it.

My dad would never know how to use this. He even calls the homescreen on the iphone the "desktop".

I think he is like a lot of people which is a bit scary since this isn't really plug and play like a lot of apple stuff. Passbook is just this empty void until you put stuff into it. It might sit empty like a lot of my friends "newstand" app.

"Ah, yes, let them use their iPhone's to easily buy more legal addictive stimulants without even realizing. Spend, spend, spend; soon we will own the world!"

I recently bought a couple of tickets from Ticketmaster to a football game. Before the Starbucks support for Passbook came out I tried the feature out and it just lead me to download separate apps. I bit and downloaded the Ticketmaster one and signed in to it. It has never integrated in with Passbook. Am I missing something here? I'd love to be able to use this when I go to the game instead of opening the tickets in mail and saving screens of the barcodes on the phone, and the app it self won't let you use it as tickets enven though it knows I bought them.

Has anyone tried this yet? Also, does anyone know if you can delete the app you're forced into downloading to get the service to run through Passbook for it to continue to run?

The venue has to support Passbook as well. That's why only about four MLB teams support it. You have to have the right scanners. Starbucks upgraded theirs when they started allowing payments via phone a year or so ago. I think it's sorta based on QR technology instead of just plain bar codes.

Exactly. I just don't get whats so cool about having it in Passbook.

I have been using the Starbucks card app for almost two years. While yes, technically it will do the same thing, I believe (and hope to verify tomorrow morning on my daily trip into Starbucks) that the Passbook version will automatically pop up on my lock screen as I walk into the store, and give me the opportunity to swipe the notification, and automatically go straight to the bar code reader.

So comparing the two experiences:

Starbucks App: One home button push, one swipe to unlock phone, type four passcode characters, press enter. Talk to Siri: "Launch Starbucks." Press "Touch to Pay." Scan card. Press "Touch when Done." Exit app. 12 separate actions (including 4 character passcode).

Passbook: Notification on lock screen. Swipe. Type four passcode characters, press enter. Scan card. Exit Passbook app. 7 separate actions (including 4 character passcode).

If you have configured the card to show on the lock screen, you don't have to enter the passcode. It's just one swipe.

I don't have that option in settings. I got the popup asking me if I wanted to add my card to Passbook but after I tapped yes I also don't see anything in Passbook. I gotta say, Passbook is very disappointing compared to how they demo'd it at WWDC. I thought we would be able to scan our store cards and all the necessary info would automatically be imported. Oh we'll, I just hope it gets better.

Go to your card in the Starbucks App. Press "Manage" and then Add to Passbook

Do the coupons come from the Target app ? Or can you scan paper coupons; web coupons ?

You have to open the iOS app, scroll down to the "daily deals" section and click "see today's deals." I think that's where a link or "add to passbook" button will show up if you haven't already added the coupon. Mine is good through 10/12, so I think it doesn't show up for me now because I have added the coupons.

As with ALL Passbook-enabled apps, you must add the item to Passbook before it shows up there. Think of it as adding an email account to Mail. You wouldn't just open mail and expect it to check email just because you have an account.

I agree it's not the simplest method, but that's on Target's end. The app team needs to have some prominent coupons section with a prominent "add to Passbook" button. Starbucks asked me if I wanted to add my card to Passbook as soon as I opened it after the update.

By the way, beware of thinking adding gift cards to Passbook through some third party will work. The cashier said something about scanning phones not working much, and I think she was talking about either scam coupons/cards or people creating their own. Mine scanned instantly. I was just worried about whether I could only use one discount in the whole list or if I could use one from each item. Thankfully it was the latter. You just can't use the same offer twice.

can you say balkanized.

This whole thing seems messy.

Let me load my Chase Card and American Express and let's call it a day. Enough with me doing all this pre loading work to different store debit cards. This is like creating more work where it's not necessary.

Heck i'd even pay with stuff through my itunes account if it lived inside passbook as a card that could be read by store POS systems.

seems a bit DOA.

Remember when you could walk into a Starbucks and an icon would appear in the music app telling you what song was playing and give you the option to buy it? Does that even still work anymore or was that discontinued years ago?

Haha... I remember that being announced. I haven't been in a Starbucks since their coffee reverted back to "Burnt and Nasty" after the brief and fleeting attempt in 2008 to "refocus the brand on coffee" (good while it lasted, but it didn't last long).

i dont understand how this card works. You put money on it right? then order your thing on your phone and it comes out of the card? so you just pick it up when you walk in the store?

Finally!

Being as I fly maybe once a year and don't use fandango, it's nice to be able to use this feature! I bought a $10 starbucks card just to try it out.

I'm gonna do the same thing lol.

Even better. I was wondering about that. But kind of scary. If I lose my phone someone could use my Starbucks card (which has autoload on it) without my passcode. I suppose my potential liability would be limited if I acted fast to disable the autoload and/or wipe my phone.

I've gotta agree with this. I'm tempted to use this tomorrow, as when the local indie shop is too busy I head on down to Starbucks.

However, WTF?

i dont understand how this card works.

Exactly.

Marvellous! I finally have a Starbucks card that I've no use (in Hong Kong) in my Passbook! I just don't want it to be empty like the Newsstand... (p.s. I do use the Newsstand to subscribe to NG Magazine on the iPad)

Of course it doesn't work in the UK. We wouldn't want a further app added to the mammoth amount of 4 apps we have with passbook here in the UK.

I have used Passbook for a couple of weeks, as well as Starbucks' few hours ago. Apple needs to address the following:
  • Smart Passbook. A gift card's balance should always and instantly reflect the latest. Flight itinerary should update if the flight changes. If I cancel the membership, so should the membership card.
  • Categorization. Gift cards, tickets, membership cards, etc. should be organized into separate "wallet."
  • Expired card. If a Passbook expires, put a trash button directly on the card (instead of making me look for the expiration date, click a tiny "i" button, and click trash button).
  • Multiple locations. I should be able to specify multiple locations.
  • App Store link.
  • Maximum brightness. If the brightness is sufficiently high, don't increase it to maximum position.

Exactly.

Seems like this is one of those "answers" looking for a problem :D

But on a brighter note I finally got my Starbucks card into my Passbook. Now I just HAVE to go to Starbucks to see if it works as advertised ;)
