You sure? Because I’m getting 60FPS at 1440p with my 3060

Did he turn FSR on?

Yes, because his result is without FSR. With FSR 2, 50% res and 69% sharpening he gets around 90 fps at 1080p low. Which settings do you use? Do you have the same 3060?

He gets around 50 fps at 1440p low with 80% res so I guess you're using 50%/540p?

I dunno I just have dynamic resolution on and have been using recommended settings being medium with ambient occlusion, vsync, and motion blur off, and I’ve been getting a steady 60FPS everywhere except New Atlantis (which tbh New Atlantis is so busy that even high end machines and Xboxes struggle in that city.)

Default works best so I just run default.

Dynamic Resolution kinda implies you're not really getting 1440p everywhere.

Kinda makes you wonder what they’re doing in the software to run so poorly… back when I was lead programmer on a game team, CPU and GPU were precious resources which today are so abundant…

Well, there you have it. You are using FSR so it's not strange he's getting below 60 without. In the Hardware Unboxed video above he gets around 40 fps at 1080 low with 3060 in New Atlantis without FSR.

Bolting on “new things” to a 11 year old engine (switching from DX11 to DX12 probably didn’t help either).

50 hours in, sorry Zelda, but Starfield is my new Game of the Year.

I did not think I'd be wrapped up in this world like I thought I would, but man this game is absolutely beautiful. This is now my new favorite Bethesda game second only to Prey 2017. The "NASApunk" world Bethesda created is amazing. The interior design, the spacesuit and weapon design, even the food design has so much detail. Whoever at Bethesda had the idea of turning alcohol into astronaut food packs, they need a promotion.

You can definitely tell Id Software helped with this game because the shooting and combat is so good, especially the shotguns. The faction quests though are as fantastic as Skyrim's were. I finished the Ryujin Industries faction questline and now I'm in the Crimson Fleet questline, deep undercover on behalf of UC SysDef, only now I've walked right into a deeper conspiracy involving GalBank and a banking spaceship that went missing that's a big haul of loot.

Thanks for this. I’ve avoided watching reviews etc as I want to experience this universe for myself. The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games are my all time favourites and live in my head rent free. If I can get more of this, I’m good. 🤤

Honestly it feels like the game was tailor made for me. Everything is just clicking.

There's one part that stuck out to me, and it's this moment I found completely by chance. You see, Starfield has a guest character from NASA: Juno

OIP.Ro-5qIey7WXHEqEC5XjL2wHaE7

Yes, Bethesda made the Juno Probe an actual character. In Starfield Juno had been in space for so long the probe became self aware. Juno is found and taken aboard the ship of two Ryujin Industries operatives under orders to take the probe back to Ryujin. When they plugged it into their ship the self aware AI panicked and accidently killed one of their crewmates. As I was flying I got an emergency hail from them asking me to help, and I come aboard and end up inbetween their argument with the AI over whether to destroy it or spare it, and asking the question does it even have a soul. I decided to let Juno live, to which the AI asked me what it should do as it doesn't know how to process life and sentience. I then told it that it must find a purpose in life, to which the AI decided it's purpose was to keep doing what it was doing before, which was explore. It made the Ryujin ship it's new home and I gave the two operatives a ride home. That little moment really stuck with me, that Bethesda took one of NASA's probes, and turned it into an existential question.

This game man...

Reviews and gameplay clips I’ve seen so far suggest that it’s a typical Bethesda RPG so far - bland and without character, with the only redeeming quality being its size. Well, I gave up on this studio after the Oblivion train wreck (I tried playing Skyrim but the game was so boring to me that I couldn’t proceed past a couple of hours). A lot of people seem to like this stuff, so who knows, maybe it’s me who doesn’t understand something.

Besides could you even play it if you wanted too? You have a Mac and this game won't play on the Mac?

So consider this, steam had over 250,000 people playing on early access, that is they gladly paid 99 dollars for the ability to play the game a week early. That translates to roughly 25 million dollars just from a small segment of motivated gamers, never mind the horde that is waiting now. Also it won't include the Xbox.

Oh honey it's got character. The NASAPunk art style combined with the music is a really unique vibe we haven't really seen before. Everything from interior design, to spacesuit design, to weapons, to robots, all take heavy inspiration from NASA's engineering. After all NASA helped Bethesda a lot with the art design. They even turned alcoholic beverages into astronaut food!

Just a small taste of the Starfield soundtrack that really helps give the game it's character, this is the shop theme:

I started it on GamePass last night and played until I popped the first achievement. I 100% understand your hesitation. I loved Oblivion and was just meh about Skyrim. I didn't like Fallout 3. Fallout 4 was good. Needless to say, I'm not a huge Bethesda fan--more of a fairweather fan.

Well, based on my first few minutes, the weather is fair. Bethesda seems back on track.

Have you tried Fallout New Vegas?

btw, Fallout 4 is my absolute favorite game, and I've done countless playthroughs. I really do think Bethesda hit it out of the park with Lore, story, and play. I get its a lot different then fallout 3 as there's no karma system, and using voice actors but overall its my favorite game.

I'm blown away by skyrim (I hadn't played Oblivion) and I'm currently doing a play through now. The immensity of that game is mind blowing. I've played this dozens of times, and yet I still find new quests that I never did. Even yesterday there as a quest in Whiterun that I never did. IT was really tiny, but it goes to show you that there's so much.

From what I'm seeing/hearing, Starfield's scale is similar. I'm not getting the game until I upgrade my GPU, plus it allows me to wait for the patches. Yet with that said, this appears to be a very solid and largely problem free game. No major bugs

This is an obvious case of different strokes for different folks. I‘m on record here as loving Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 4. For myself, Oblivion was amazing for its time, Skyrim is compelling, and Fallout 4 was my favorite. They all have flaws and are far from perfect, but overall they have given me great satisfaction so I can work with the flaws. :) I’m happy to admit that my expectations for a game can be different from other players, preferring relatively easy, over hard and I frequently take steps to reduce my perception of grind.

That said I’d be interested in hearing your description of why Oblivion was a train wreck?

Agreed. I'd label myself as one of the biggest space geeks out there. This may sound cheesy...but I've been waiting my whole life for a game like this 😂 It is VERY difficult to put the controller down.

One of my favorite things so far is actually just scenery. Being on a planet's moon and seeing the planet (ringed ones, especially) up in the sky is awesome and something that makes me wish even more that we lived in a time where we could ACTUALLY GO to places like this! This is a complete and total geek-out game for me

Don't think it's about not understanding, but Bethesda's way of doing open worlds seems to scratch the itch of a certain kind of gamer (myself included). But it also seems to really turn off others - there's not a lot of middle ground!
