The post above yours is proof, that people actually expected to be free.

And Valve is clear about it, too, but some people don't seem to be reading it carefully:

"So you only have a few days to decide if your free copy of Portal is worth the price we're currently charging"

Which can be legitimately interpreted as "You have a few days to decide if you want Portal for free then it goes back to its regular price". Again, not saying that's the case but it IS a legitimate reading of that statement so try not to mock, mkay?

Geez, why does the Steam client need 11% CPU on my MBP for a background download? My fans are running like crazy and it's doing nothing but a Portal download.

not sure what good having portal available is if a mac pro can't play it.

seriously, I can run this well at medium settings at 1600x1200 in bootcamp on this machine...

are Apple's graphics drivers that bad?

Well, "Your Driver Details: (Blank) Windows version:unknown" speaks volumes about a Mac port

im downloading Portal at 3.1MB/s so yes that might be on the slow side.. ;)

can't wait till they get CS:S up for Mac!!

Nah, yours is FAST, i have 20mb broadband (thats fast in the UK lol) :p and mines only going at 600kb/s

Not, it's not a legitimate interpretation. You can play the full version of Portal until 24th, free of charge, and if you want to play it after that date, you have to buy it.

It's just like the free-to-play-weekends Valve is having every other month.

You can complete Portal in 4 - 6 hours. Once you go through it there is not much of a replay value.

Those 6 hours will be totally and absolutely worth it though.

With "Portal Prelude" (if it's compatible with the Mac-version of Portal, don't know), you get another 3-4 hours out of it.

Working great on my late 2009 MBP

Works just great on my 15 inch MBP (late 2009 vintage). It did ask me to select the higher performance video card, which I did, and things have been working just fine ever since.

Took about 30 minutes to snag the almost 4GB download.

I was hoping for TF2, but am sure they will release that later on since their ads spoke of new content every week.

No, your interpretation is it's free until the 24th. The wording on the web site can support that. But equally it CAN mean that if you download it before the 24th then it is a free copy that you can keep forever. Both ARE legitimate interpretations of the wording as it is given on the site.

Sorry, but just because you believe one thing that does not necessarily make your interpretation correct. Also note that I'm not saying that the other version is correct, I am just pointing out that there both interpretations can be supported by the original statement.

edit Also, reading on the steam forums there's a lot of confusion there too but some people have pointed out that once downloaded there is no expiration timer next to the title as has been seen with other extended trials. Again, not saying that proves it (I really don't care) but it does point to both viewpoints having weight behind them.

Wow... I am stuck after clicking the "Big Red Button" (which, by the way, doesn't say "DOWNLOAD" as advertised). The browser goes dark gray and nothing happens...

EDIT: Now it's "ERROR -324"... :/
EDIT2: Restarted Steam and now downloading Portal...

I downloaded this and love that Steam is here for the MAC.

Thanks Valve for free Portal. i'm giving it a try, looks and functions awesome on my mac pro, but i don't know how to play it yet, so like many games i need a strategy guide.

Also, it is nice to see about 63 games for mac's already for sale, including many from the Sid Meier's CIVILIZATION series.

me... i am hoping for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and some other fun PC FPS's which are definite must buys for me.

Only someone who has no idea what steam is or how it works (or how they've handled every other "free" game in their past) would have that interpretation.

And, they'd be wrong.

Search the library for portal, click on the full priced title and you'll go to its page on Steam. The first option should just show it as 'install game'.

That happened to me too. Try going to All Games or something. It appeared there for me, then it gave me the option to download.

The download for Portal is ~5gb for me. It's taking forever on my internet connection.

The steam program seems very buggy. There is a Tooltip permanently floating on my desktop that says "Vanilla Crazy Cake Beat all six Portal advanced maps." even when I minimize the program, and the main window doesn't always come back from being minimized or respond after it appears.

"So you only have a few days to decide if your free copy of Portal is worth the price we're currently charging"

"which is you ever-so-slightly moving your index finger..."

which seems to mean it's FREE free. not limited free.

or, you can just stop reading whenever the words back up what you think... regardless of what is actually true. or what the words actually say.

try finishing the words next time, THEN making a decision. derp.

Hoorah! I need to run home and play immediately! Firewall at work = :(

No proxy settings for Steam?

I get the same message. What now? I'm amazed no one else is getting this. I AM online. ???

And, they'd be wrong.

With all due respect there are experienced posters over on the Steam forums going with that interpretation.

What I'm trying to say here is why don't we all keep an open mind until this is clarified by Valve? Rather than, you know, laughing at those who hold a different view? Just a thought...

Edit And just to add a bit more info, if you go to the Portal page in the library it says

Act before May 24th to get your free copy of Portal!
