Ok, so here's a question ... sorry, I'm not clued up on how this is going to work for Mac users who used to use Windows.

I've signed into my Steam account, but there's no sign of Half Life 2 for the Mac yet.

I've bought Half Life 2 when it launched on PC, and still have my copy here.

When Half Life 2 comes out for the Mac via Steam, will I be able to download it for free since I've already paid for the Windows version?

Cheers.

If you've never registered it with Steam, you will have to. I assume you have a boxed copy on multiple CD's along with a serial. You will have to register that serial for Half Life 2 on Steam.

Im getting an error when i try to launch steam saying

" Steam could not create directory /users/name/Library/Application Support/Steam"

Then right after that error another saying

"Steam requires (above directory) be created on a case insensitive filesystem, with read-write access"

Are you using Mac OS Extended, Case Sensitive? You can check it in Disk Utility.

Uhoh! On my MBP I cant see through the portals in Portal! Which is a bit of a game-breaker. XD

Its a good start anyway.. I'll redownload it, see if that helps. In no rush..

As for the people saying that its time limited. Reading comprehension lapse. This is a *free copy* of Portal.. I've taken part in free weekends and am used to Steam, they'd never word it like this if it's going to die on us.

They're trying to hook the mac userbase, the windows users already most likely already have Portal, so this is perfectly sensible and just like them. If they give you one demo that times out then you delete steam when it times out. If they give you something worth keeping you'll have to keep Steam installed on your Mac - then they can advertise/sell stuff to you.

Minimum: OS X version Leopard 10.5.8, Snow Leopard 10.6.3, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8 or higher, or ATI X1600 or higher, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connect
:(

Here's hoping that 10.6.4's OpenGL tweaks brings Portal to my 7600GT …odd to not see it on there, but the X1600 is.

Requires Case-Insensitive FS?

Got the same error other reported since I'm running a case-sensitive FS. Oh well, sucks to be me I guess 'cos I'm not reformatting just to play a game.

Mine is a UK DVD edition, and I just went to my Library on Steam and clicked "Add A Game".

When I entered my serial number it told me to install Half Life 2, which obviously I can't do on my Mac because it's a PC/Windows DVD!

FFS, go to the goddamn Portal page in Steam.

Read.

"Act before May 24th to get your free copy of Portal!"

Download it before the 24th, and its on your account, forever. And ever. And ever.

Good lord, no wonder they felt the need to specify the 'two-button' mouse comment.

Meh. What is going on with steam?? It keeps telling me i must have a connection to the internet which i am. Is anyone else getting this message???

Yeah I am. I have a feeling its cause im at school. Its weird because the update gets to about 75% then gives me the error.

Check your settings for portal render depth.

Got it. Downloading Portal now.

Only I problem I've found so far:

A. Their server is getting hammered

B. Expose glitch

It's the standard-message when Steam can't reach the servers in a reasonable timeframe.

For those getting the connection error - it might be because of Peer Guardian 2. I had it installed on both my macs (installed on Windows too). Steam can only connect when PG is disabled.

Connection problems when millions of people all try to get new game all at the same time.

Shocker.

OMG I just played Portal now with my 9600M activated, It's AMAZING! Much better than Crossover Games :D

Oh and the best thing: You can CMD+TAB out of the game and do anything else while it seamlessly plays! You can also use EXPOSÉ with it! Try doing that in Windows, once you're in full screen, you have to quit the game to do anything else there! :D

Very excited about Steam finally being available for Mac.

Now people won't have to ridicule Mac users anymore for not having any games :)

Downloading my free copy of Portal at the moment, taking a rather long amount of time, not reaching my max. download speed by a long shot. < Figures alot of Mac users are eager to download this stuff right now :)

Also downloading the Torchlight demo, if you haven't noticed yet, it's 50% off for the full game, but I'd like to try the demo first, before I buy anything.

Check your settings for portal render depth.
Tried that.. it was on 2 (recommended) I tried one, 3 and 4.. All left me with a black vortex.. Which makes it terrifying. A leap of faith every time. I'll try it with the 9400m and see if its my install or choice of GPU. :)
