I normally hate Steve's email responses, because he's usually so rude, but he really got it right this time. Everyone is too obsessed with this thing, it's just a phone. Get over it, nerds. Get outside and do something useful.

Remember dropped calls in 2.1? Remember dropped calls in 3.0? They still sold a bunch of phones and still will

And that only proves that people are a bunch of koolaid drinking sheep.

It's "just a phone" but it won't even function as a phone. I think anyone who spent $200 on a phone that doesn't work has every right to be pissed.

Just a phone?

"Just a phone?" In Steve Jobs jargon, "It's the best mobile phone on the PLANET!" :D

Wow, just unacceptable! Again it looks like Steve Jobs' is not recognizing the issue. Very disappointing, I'm honestly not liking Apple anymore. The "Not Worth It", is ridiculous, the iphone 4 starts at $199US, for the amount we pay it should be working properly.

The other thing that annoys me is, some of the Apple fanboys back up Apple no matter what.. =/

Apple needs to straighten things out. Is this is a firmware fix or is this a legitimate hardware problem? Will 1.7 million+ iPhone 4 Customers have to take back their phone in order to get it fixed??

I'm holding tight onto this 3GS until the smoke clears. SJ should stop answering these e-mails.

It is a big epic design flaw, though Apple will never acknowledge it, because if it does... it will have to replace virtually all phones sold.
Besides... the problem cannot be fixed just with a replacement, the design of the antenna has to be changed or the problem will keep on appearing.

Apple will probably give free bumpers to people who complain a lot and that's all. Next year, we will have a revolutionary design (lol) and no more fancy side antennas :D

If Jobs is replying it is because he has been instructed to do so... he does not answer randomly neither he does anything without thinking, but this time I think he (or whoever took the decision about the antenna) failed badly. And I'm pretty sure that engineers recommended another design but for those executives it was pretty and "revolutionary"... I guess.

But don't worry, Apple will sell millions of iPhones :D because people don't care about potential problems (and this one is a fact), they want to show off the latest gadget... and once they buy it, they will realise of the problems but money will already be on Apple's accounts

But it's the internet. It's important.

The iPhone 4 is nice. But "It is just a phone. Not worth it." also serves as a pretty accurate review. If you need a phone, it's good.

Will the emergency doctor, who doesn't even know about this issue (because it's a non-issue, right?), say It is just a human life. Not worth it. when he cannot get a signal to call for the heart defibrillator?

"retire, relax, enjoy your family. It is just a phone. Not worth it.

Maybe this last part was addressed to Steve Jobs himself? :D

It's just a phone, why so angry? If it works for you, great! If not, return it within the return window and get another phone. It's not rocket science it's a simple iPhone. I really don't understand why so many people are bent out of shape over the design flaw of the device. There are 100s of other phones on the market, and nobody is forcing you to buy an iPhone 4.

Some Apple fans are almost cult-like in their obsession and worship of Apple products. They must have them, even if they're defective, and will not even consider something as simple as returning the product and buying something else. So when something like this happens, they'd rather yell until they're blue in the face than taking the easy road of getting their money back and buying a better phone.

Steve Jobs, on behalf of stock holders everywhere...****.
Yeah, he really isn't doing himself or his company any favors with these recent emails.

The god himself said it! "It's just a phone". Depending on an individual perspective this may seem condescending and or a desperate statement to control collateral damage, then again it may be wise advise from our enlightened leader. The iPhone as wonderful as it is has increasingly become the poster child product of mass consumer hysteria. :)

OK - I get Steve's reply. It is, after all, personally NOT the hill I want to die on. But...more so....I get the consumer's frustration. Apple consumers tend to have major brand loyalty. And we do pay for the "status" of owning Apple's stuff.

So - do I think the consumer got a bit dramatic? Yup.

Would it still piss me off? Yup.

And all the more so if I felt like Steve was making light of it. People spent a lot of time to get their new phones. And to then find out something like the death grip issue really burns. Even if it is only a fraction of a percentage of folks affected. I respect Steve for saying what he feels notwithstanding.

The ATT deal is a major thorn in Apple's side.

My 3G won't hold a charge worth a damn anymore and I'm "eligible" for a new iPhone 4. And I want one despite what I'm reading. Just can't decide if I should pull the trigger now or wait a few weeks to see how things settle out.

Damn Steve's reality distortion field! But even that dramatic field effect will NOT have me paying $30 for a 5 cent rubber bumper...that's just crazy!

That's my $0.02 anyway

Ok, you're a fool. Anyone that holds their phone in their left hand will have this problem.

Rather than holding it from the top, slide it so that your left thumb is below the - button. Its a more secure way to hold the phone. If you cup the phone, your fingers wrap around and your palm will be up against your face when bringing it up to your ear.

Ok, you're a fool. Anyone that holds their phone in their left hand will have this problem.

I live in NYC and I haven't been able to reproduce the problem here. I did have the problem when I was in the middle of the woods over the weekend, but service out there is crap anyways. I'm going to agree with people that it really is a tiny issue that's been blown out of proportion.

I'm convinced that at least 75% of the people complaining about this issue are simply complaining in hopes of getting something for free. I honestly don't see how you can comfortably use the phone while gripping the bottom of the phone.

In my experience, my marginal signal has gone up a couple bars while walking around my house and it doesn't drop everytime I sit on the couch so I'm a happy camper.

Just a phone, doesn't even make phone calls reliably

If it's just a phone, can't reliably make phone calls, dropping calls left and right, and now requiring Cirque du Soleil art of holding with your hands, what is Steve Jobs smoking???

Or it's just a bunch of greedy money-making magnates that laugh at everyone who buys into the iPhone crap.

Where is my old flip phone I used to have on Sprint, that thing worked and I replaced them every 2 or 3 years just because I would get bored with it.

How can they fix something that is flawed to begin with?

I think it's a scam so that everyone has to buy handfree headsets!! :)

honestly, i hold my phone normally but no death grip and it works fine. whoever is complaining about reception must be a perfectionist and require 4 bars at all times or scratched their phone already and is trying to weasel their way to getting a brand new one. shut the hell up and enjoy your iphone 4.

Nope, lefties and those with big hands can't avoid holding thephone that way without risking dropping it.

Holding the phone avoiding that spot is completely unnatural to me.

I find this sort of hilarious. Why doesn't this guy return it or buy a bumper. I understand his frustration, but this issue was making your life so awful wouldn't you at least give the bumper a shot? Or just buy a droid. We live in a capitalist society. We let our opinions be known by how we spend our money, not by sending hysterical letters to CEOs of he products we dislike.

GET THIS IN YOUR HEADS....APPLE WILL NEVER DO THE OBVIOUS THING! THEY CAN ONLY DO THE MOST INNOVATIVE THING!

You call a phone that doesn't reliably work as a phone innovative? How stupid is that?
remember: it does work for you, because you modified it (bumper) und you are obviously in an area with good signal strength and not much intereference, plus you don't hold it in a way the phone may find offensive. Good for you. It doesn't work as advertised for many of us.
