You know...i have been a silent observer on this site for years. I never have ever signed up for a user name because i enjoyed reading different people's perspective, and felt it was best for me to just not get involved...but this has changed recently.

The apple community has changed with the increased popularity. Where as it was once a small group of evangelists fighting for apple to succeed, it is now half of the old order, and half of some sort of new "apple better not have any flaws in anything they produce, and everything they make had better use the best hardware on the planet, or else they suck and i am ditching them for microsoft/google." The fun seems to be leaving the building. I remember a lot of quirky apple products from the early days, including the macintosh. Can you imagine that apple had a computer that you couldn't expand the memory on?? can you imagine?? what would happen if they released that today...i swear people would threaten to sue apple for false advertizing because apple told them it was a good product, but it didn't meet exactly everything they want.

The antenna issue on the iphone 4 is a perfect example. I hear everything from apple should give away free bumpers to "steve jobs is a horrible ******* who stole my money, and handed me a tin can with a string on it in exchange"....come on now, people. Please.

Due to my line of work, i have encountered several iphone 4's in several midwestern states, and in several apple stores. Can you, if so inclined, reduce the signal to the phone by bridging the gap between the two antennas? Yes. Does it result in a horrible catastrophic failure of every feature of the device every time you pick it up? No.

The responses of "i'm just going to complain about dropped calls until i'm blue in the face, or apple resolves the issue, and i'm going to continue holding the phone in my left hand, without a case because that's how i've always used a phone" is akin to saying "i'm going to continue to fall on my face every time I take a step in my new air jordans because i've always worn sandals, and never had to tie my own shoes before, so i will continue this behavior until nike issues a fix so i don't keep falling on my face."

If you are very concerned about dropped calls, focus on how to best avoid them while you are waiting a permanent solution, or stop complaining.

I am not sure if no one realizes how moronic they sound when they complained about how the iphone looks, and now refuse to put a case on it because they don't think they "should have to". I also want to point out that i have noticed who you are, and will not call you out, because i am not rude, but i think that trolling is ridiculous and childish. Looking to bring down apple should never be the goal of an apple fan, and as far as I know, this site is basically an apple fan site...so yeah...get over that part.

One last thing. If i could put a moratorium on the terms "fan boy" and "kool aid". If you think people are not being realistic, say that. THIS IS A SITE FULL OF APPLE FANS, AND PEOPLE THAT (used to) WANT APPLE TO SUCCEED. We like the apple experience, and a lot of us believe in what apple stands for. If you don't like steve jobs, his products, or his business philosophies, WHY ARE YOU HERE??!?

anyway...

much love to the mods, and thank you guys for seeming to stick to the facts in your news posts.

Which is why he said he is either delusional OR a liar. Basically he is blowing smoke up everybody's ***. You can't deny that there is a signal issue. It is very easily reproduced. Also it is not just the bars, but a lot of times the call will get choppy or drop. Then when you take your fingers off it is clear as a crystal.

Chris Breen on the latest Macworld podcast gave a good description of these blind Apple loving fans that do nothing but turn ordinary people off from buying their products. ;)

I'm hoping the press confrence is to tell us that Steve's been fired!

The guy has screwed up big time....but of course (some of) you guys wont agree because you would happily lick his boots!

The guy needs to be removed - he's done.

Steve goes by Costanza's theory: "Remember, it's not a lie if you believe it."

Kind of like Nixon/Frost..

David Frost: Are you really saying the President can do something illegal?
Richard Nixon: I'm saying that when the President does it, it's *not* illegal!

;)

Are you from mars or what? Why should they fire the guy that made the company bigger than Microsoft??

So everyone not sharing your undocumented opinion would like to lick Jobs´boots.
Wow, man, your arguments really showed me that I was wrong and that this antenna thing is not just an artificial hype from some frustrated Apple-haters.

Apple dugg a huge hole for themselves. They played with the marketing and PR department promising a truly revolutionary product like it is the case with each new iteration of the iphone and then the ppl believed and thought they REALLY REALLY need to have it.

Once they got it in their hands, they got offended that it is not working like they were told. It’s understandable on one hand but on the other it’s just pure irony that the ppl really believe they need a new cell phone every year.

It’s both sad and genius on Apple’s part.

No. That is not how it is.
More like:
"Having always worn Air Jordans with no problem, now the laces of my New Improved Air Jordans keep undoing themselves and I keep falling on my face."
And the manufacturer's solution? I have to walk/run differently. Or put a laundry peg over the knot.

Apple screwed up. Period. They need to step up and solve the issue and not try and treat customers like mushrooms: ie. Feed them s**t and keep them in the dark…
The day Jobs announced those little rubber band "cases", Apple Inc. knew they had a problem.

Anyway. let's see what this Press Conference brings.

***************

BTW, Anyone curious about Phil Schiller?
He was not at the iPhone 4 event, usually he is on a video and cheerleading from the front.
But we have seen neither hide nor hair of him…
Is all well up high at Apple Inc.?

I guess, hoist by their own petard, eh? ;)

I'm hardly an Apple-hater

If I hated Apple, then why would I:
  • Develop (free) apps on the appstore
  • Own an iMac
  • Own a Mac Book Pro
  • Own a Mac Pro
  • Own 3 iPhones (1st gen, 3g and 4)
[*]Own 2 iPod touches (orig and new)
    [*]Own an iPod Nano
    [*]Own an iPad

My point is, Steve KNEW the antenna was a problem. Yet because he's a complete sucker for a 'revolutionary' design, he still went ahead. Then point blank denied there being a problem.

I can understand wanting to do damage control, but denying anything is wrong is unfair and insulting.

That, combined with Apple apparently no longer giving a crap about the Mac (classic Pirates of Silicon Vally manoeuvre - putting the iOS team up against the Mac team) have screwed everyone over.

Remember, Apple is supposed to be a company that makes computers (as in desktop/laptop). However it now seems they are a Mobile Devices company, with a side-project (the Mac). This is Steve's doing.

Its time for him to step aside. The guy has admitted in the past that he likes focusing on ONE project. That project is iOS...he's done with the Mac.

Mac.

I think, when you look at your stance on mac, you are very right. Apple has indeed lost a bit of focus on the macs, to my opinion. especially when you look at adopting innovations there, they're lagging behind.

Wait wait wait a minute, you want this guy to the thing that puts food on his table for his family just over a product flaw which didn't affect that many people, yet was hyped by the media? (Well, hat's what I've read, I've seen numerous people say their iPhone 4 is perfectly fine minus the usual AT&T crap).

Onto the main thing, I'm just looking forward to the Press Conference in 5 or so hours. It's funny that no-one seems to really know what'll happen.

I would say it's more like:

nike: "air jordans have a new improved, wax coated lace"
customer: "HEY! my laces won't stay tied! I fell on my face! the shoe is defective!"
nike: "the shoe is not defective, but if you are having problems with the laces coming untied, you can replace the laces with the standard laces"
customer: NO! I'd rather fall on my face over and over again untill nike changes the design of the shoe!"

anyway...sorry about the book i wrote earlier. Long night.

The antenna issue is a smaller problem when compared to emails and open letters coming from Apple which insult the intelligence of its customers while providing no facts to back up their claims.

What formula were they using originally a few years ago? Why after an update a few years back did reception magically appear better? What formula are they using now. And does the formula at all dictate whether or not the radio gets more power or not to keep its signal.

Non Issue
You don't have the fact.

Comments like this are fueling a small fire which turned into one that's raging.

Acknowledge that some or perhaps all iPhones have an inherent flaw and fix it. It's not that hard of a concept. Personally, I'd respect Apple a lot more if they admitted SOME problem and that they were fixing it.

Instead we get a worthless open letter and these emails implying that Apple is 100 percent right and that our data is wrong.

Really? How are dropped calls bad data. If I'm getting a dropped call, I'm getting a dropped call. That's like telling me I'm not bleeding when I have an open wound I'm looking at.

You don't KNOW these things, you assume them.
They make 2-3 times as much money as when they only made computers, I don't see the problem.

That's important if you're an investor. or employee. As a consumer - who cares how much money a company makes. It's not about their profit, it's about their products.

The truth is out there.
Steve

Sent from my iPhone 4 while holding it in my left hand, specifically at the bottom left corner.

Unbelievable

I live in Kentucky, a place no 1 in Calif cares about, with the spotty signal and hills and valleys why then does my iPhone 4 perform better than my former iPhones? I have yet to drop a call, the 3GS would do so regularly. I have no explanation for this but I plan on buying a element case for my I4 . I will not down load the fix until I hear that it won't f**k up my I4.

Phone design issue

If it turns out to be only a software issue I will eat my iPhone 4.

It is a hardware issue to all the people defending Apple (I am a fanboy by the way). Apple is adding an internal bumper into the iphone (or so it was reported). Why would they do this? Duh, it's a hardware issue. However, I am not sure what this will do as it happens when the outside of the antenna is touched.

The only way to solve this is issue is to give out free bumpers or cases to all iPhone 4 owners. Apple gave everyone a $100 "rebate" when they lowered the price of the first iPhone months after it was released.

And BTW the bumpers do nothing to protect the iPhone 4 from drops, now you know why they were created.

Look at it this way 1.7 million iPhones x $29.00 per bumper = $49,300,000. Thats an extra $49.3 million to make the iPhone 4 work as intended. This is piss poor business ethics.

Best dang iPhone yet

My iPhone 4 rocks. I feel the need to share my joy since 80% are complaining. Yes I am a fanboy but my iPhone 4 works flawlessly. I can hold it in my left hand, right hand, foot and it still works. I thought maybe it was just my city but I am out and about this week traveling and it works like a charm. Someone needs to tell Steve that I must have his unit.

You don't KNOW these things, you assume them.

My point stands. Steve should resign. He's done.

To whoever said to me 'you want this guy to the thing that puts food on his table for his family just over a product flaw' I am assuming that was supposed to be 'you want to fire this guy (steve) over a product flaw'.

The BILLIONAIRE doesn't need Apple's money to put food on his table you fool.

This isn't his first mistake, and wont be his last.

Why doesn't Apple just hold something, like, I dunno...a press conference to clear this whole mess up? Because that would be great.

kthnxbai

I don't really get all the reactions, like it's the end of the world or something. If the iPhone 4 drops calls too much, just get another phone/operator? If it drops bars but doesn't drop your call or connection, then who gives a damn, seriously. You can either buy one and live with it/deal with it/love it or you can just get a refund.

And Steve Jobs is not a liar or crazy. He's a marketeer and a showman and will defend his Apple at all cost and will portrait his company as perfect and untouchable. Don't expect Apple to flat out admit that the iPhone 4 sux, because that would just be silly. That's just not how Apple does things. Either they are going to do a silent revision and fix it or just do nothing. Either way, it's your money, get something else if you don't like it.

So you agree that the antenna/laces need to be changed?

What About the Documented 24 dB Loss?

Wow. Ever care to think that maybe the media has picked up on a wrong technical fact? Not to mention it was never mentioned what facts were wrong.

Do you people just live to work yourselves up without applying any critical thinking?

The media will not bother with facts that can't be boiled-down to 15 second sound bytes. No surprise there!

What I want to know is how software could possibly deal with the 24 dB signal drop as reported on Anandtech. Regardless of how well or poorly the software handles switching frequencies, reducing the signal loss is critical because you can't switch to a signal that you can't receive!
