Wait.. isn't this apple TV just an ipod touch without the screen and the apps?

No. An iPod Touch can't stream to your home theater system nor can it give a large amount of people the option to ditch cable.

Does anyone seriously think Steve Jobs is reading each one of those emails and replying? Really ?

At best the PR department that reads them forward the odd one or two to him, but more likely they just send replies themselves "from Steve Jobs".

It just simply HAS to be Steve Jobs who answers the emails, because no one else could imitate his style!

And thanks to his minimalistic replies, he can answer one email in one second! There should be an app that would display all your emails, and then two buttons for each email: "Yep" and "Nope" making it super easy!

But seriously, I don't know if he's really the one replying, but he did admit that he does reply to them quite often on All Things Digital. So basically I wouldn't think he would need special staff to write one-word emails every once in a while. As for reading through all of them, maybe he doesn't read them all, or just quickly goes through the subjects...

He responded to me recently when I sent him an email about the proximity sensor rumor from Apple Australia.

These missives from Steve

These one word replies from "The Steve" and the speculation if they are from the God head of Apple or not remind me of the scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian where two groups are in a argument over if an urn, or a sandal is a message and true symbol of their messiah.:D

And the People who get a reply from "The Steve" feel blessed and in a state of grace.;):D:)

Which is why I believe none of these emails actually come from him. That's not the way corporations work. The CEOs of companies have multiple secretaries (personal assistants depending on your area in the world) who first filter his emails and action stuff for him (and respond to the majority of his emails pretending to be him). The number he would actually see, given his busy schedule, is most likely a fraction of the number he gets. I believe any emails like this would be handled by a dedicated PR staffer. He's a busy man running the second largest (market value) company in the world, and simply does not have the time to spend sending emails to people asking questions about their orders.

Apple is not your regular corporation if you haven't noticed, so those rules don't apply. Steve seems to genuinely care. He said he replies himself at the All Things Digital conference.

I'm over this whole "that's the way it is" attitude people have in regards to companies. Not every company has to, or does act like NBC. If you don't hold all companies to higher standards you're going to end up with a bunch of NBCs.

The email confirms nothing because the wrong question was asked. If the emailer had asked a direct question like, "will it ship in September", then, "yep", would be a confirmation.

As it was, the emailer made a statement of the ilk, "if I want coffee at breakfast, I'll need to get some coffee before breakfast". An outsider replying "yep" to that does not predict the actual presence of coffee at breakfast.

On the veracity of these responses, I can see Jobs randomly reading a couple of customer emails a day. Apple is more consumer-oriented than any traditional computer company. Reviewing direct customer feedback is a simple way to cut through all the filtering (good and bad) that goes on in large companies. It lets the guy at the top stay in the loop on what's happening on the street. Other successful consumer-companies do this too - perhaps not so obviously or personally.

The recent comments from NBC and Viacom put the future of this model of tv in question. Hopefully Apple has a backup plan in place to allow purchases from a device with no onboard storage

The 'onboard storage' is your iDevice.
Networks who don't get onboard are going to be sideswiped by AirPlay.
AirPlay is the killer app here, not rentals. Rentals are just an opportunity for networks to get in on the action if they're smart (which I'm betting they aren't ..)

No the onboard storage is the 16GB of storage that the AppleTV has.

Just a stupid question from someone who has never had or used or even seen Apple TV at work. What is it actually doing??
It sounds to me as all it is, is a streaming client for itunes, or any internet based streaming site like netflix for your living room TV. So it is not real TV it is just a stupid streaming client, although they call it Apple TV?

There is no DVB-S2/C/T reveiver in there to watch news stuff like BBC, Al Jazeera, MTV or some documentary, series whatever that is running at the time?

Can the Apple TV Access/Play ripped movies from NAS?

Understanding it can stream from iTunes, can I also access and play my ripped movies and tv shows that are stored outside of iTunes? I currently do this from Front Row using symlinks to my NAS.

I ordered an AppleTV on Sep 1.
Still says shipping in Sept.
Just got off the phone with Apple, asking about why my Airport Extreme hasn't shipped yet.
Asked about the AppleTV. He said still shipping in Sept. Likely last day of month. ie Thursday.

I think the future of media is in cloud storage. You buy a TV show or movie once, but never download it. You can watch it as many times you want as long as you have high-speed internet access.

I think your gist is right here. And may I just add some fuel to that fire? You know that huge new data center Apple is building in North Carolina? It's scheduled to be complete by the end of this year. That's coincidentally in the holiday season where Apple is offering a new product: An Apple TV with no local storage. Let's see, a huge data center for cloud storage of massive files? What could that possibly be for? Hmmm. ;)

There was commentary previously that it would be hard to "jail break" this compared to the older ATV. But I think it is starting to set in that point of attack is the device that streams to this. I'm hoping Apple will make it easy to stream all sorts of audio and video to this beyond itunes. If not, I'm sure there will be third party options.

I'm so excited of what Apple TV can become.....especially the massive potential of AirPlay.

Like streaming apps (like news, stocks, sports), getting info about a show your watching (via a popup window during), being interactive with whatever your watching, and or etc....etc

I can't wait.....I just updated my surround sound receiver to a Denon with full HDMI capabilities just for the occasion.....:D

Hurry up Mr Jobs.....there is only a week left in September......:apple:

Still no update on my order status. Looking forward to this smaller version. I use the original Apple TV all the time and Netflix stream will make it more useful. Prob will sell the old one.
