Amen. Another commentator posted a similar "reality check", and of course some commented to "get over it", "it's not as though we're ignoring reality", and my fav "should we go shout at golfers that there's more important things in the world?". lol Golfing and such is one thing, but hundreds of posts wasting time about an icon? Time could be better spent.

1. Ridiculous. Your on a MACRUMORS forum. Everything on this site is completely pointless when you look at horrendous things in the world like the Pakistan flood. Maybe you should switch off Safari and start preparing food packages...

2. We care cos Apple cares. That's what makes it different to PCs. No one at Apple says 'who cares it's only an icon'. The day they do is the day we'd all best start looking at switching.

3. Back to the topic. As a designer who finds this stuff interesting I'm not a fan of the logo. It does look a bit 'Design your first Mac OSX Icon tutorial 101'. The idea they dropped it cos we no longer use CDs seems a bit redundant when you look at the other icons. The Dictionary/address books are books, Font Book icon uses old school letterpress blocks, text edit uses a pen and paper etc etc. They're all great icons. Removing the CD seems to be more of a statement than anything else. It's just a shame the icon has suffered. Oh well... as long as this ISN'T going to be the adopted look for all OSX icons in the future I can live with it.

Debate?

Really, there is no debate - the icon sucks. Period. There is however a debate as to whether we should care so much. :)

As to how such a poor icon came to be the iTunes icon, I'd say the good graphic artists have all been moved to iOS. Non-iPhone/iPad development is now manned by a skeleton staff of people who spend there days polishing their resumes, trying to come up with a way to get on the "cool" iOS team (where Jobs is putting all his focus, hence the lack of attention to detail on this poor iTunes release) and off the "non-cool" "upgrade iTunes/OS X/iWork" job.

Many of us worried about OS X being neglected with all the focus on the iPhone. iTunes 10 is evidence of exactly what we feared. There is likely more to come unless Apple (and Steve) wake up soon. :(

don't piss Steve Jobs. he can add neon lighting to all apple stores only to match the new itunes icon

I never had a problem with the old icon until i saw the new one, it makes the old one look archaic. But really, its a bit superfluous to complain about a stupid icon when its the program behind it that matters.

I totally agree. It's not just about how me/you/whoever like it or not, it's about design and a mediocre update(in general).

The whole new interface of iTunes(little changes) shows a lack of creativity and it looks like most of it weren't necessary in the first place. It's like being forced to change it just because they have to say it's new and different(marketing rubbish), but you can see they didn't work their asses off to improve it, and yes! there is still a lot to improve in iTunes.

Get the CD back in there.

"Rip Mix Burn" is the core of itunes.

More songs are purchased by download but the already purchased CDs are still out there, being sold at used music stores.

The CD needs to stay along with the "tunes" in itunes.

CDs are getting outdated, keep up with the Joneses.

Do you not know that there is an entire generation of children who don't know what a CD is. You show them one and they think it's a DVD. They have never bought one and there is no CD player in their house.

That's true. The disc is not necessarily a CD any longer. The combination of the disc and the music note could represent movies and music.

One thing is for sure. Its not a blu ray disc in the old icon.

CDs are getting outdated, keep up with the Joneses.

Doesn't matter. Get it back in there.

But as a stock holder, I'm happy to see people marching to the beat of the marketing departments.

The new icon feels crude and non-Apple like. Unsophisticated. It feels like a step towards the other camp.

I don't mind losing the CD, but why bother keeping the redundant musical note? This is the 21st century.

The new icon looks cartoonish to me. 1940s cartoonish, actually.

I haven't downloaded iTunes 10 yet mostly because I am still retrieving pieces of my jaw, dropped to the floor when I heard about Ping. All I could think of was the pre-firewall days of internet and the 'ping of death' hysteria. Hah! Who knew back then that the real ping of death via the internet would arrive in the trojan horses of "social" networking!?

Yep, feeling curmudgeonly this morning. Something to do with the lawn needing mowing again. Ta ta.

... In the leftmost panel , those gray icons could be confusing. They suggest "disabled features".....

Yeah, I thought the uniform grey was unhelpful, until my "Rentals" icon turned red to warn me I had a rental expiring today.

Against all the other bland grey, it really got my attention. Not sure that would've been the case under the old colour scheme.

I'm not a fan of the new icon. I don't exactly want to downgrade to the old icon, but I am looking for an alternative.

Question

As a graphic designer for over 20 years. I concur: that new logo sucks! It looks like someone created that in about 2 minutes. Let see, "Take generic 2 tone aqua color circle, add musical note . . . . and . . . . there you go! Instant logo. Can I interest you in 20 animated gifs for your web site now?"

I much rather prefer something like this:

P.S. This icon was designed by Chris Carlozzi. He is a link to it.

So as a designer of 20 years, did you steal the silver outer ring from the Pop Cap games logo or do you work for PCG?

The silver ring is a bit much. After living with the icon For one day as my wallpaper I think the volume icon could be changed. No one cares that you can adjust the volume in iTunes.

Seriously?

Seriously? Come on man. At least give props to folks who you edited from?

I don't really have a problem with the icon. But I agree it doesn't match with the design of Apple's hardware. It looks fun and whimsical, whereas the hardware looks Modernist. That's a tension that's been there for a while with Apple's software vs. hardware, though, ever since they started moving away from candy colored iMacs and iBooks to aluminum minimalism.

it's an icon. Personally, I found the old icon rather boring. The new icon has a more intense color to it, making it noticed immediately. I think it was a good move on apple's part

It looks like the same basic ring but the one you posted has shading on parts of the ring. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't copied at all. Just the same basic ring and the one you posted was made more realistic with the shading.

I don't like the new logo either. It looks like something I once saw in a step-by-step Photoshop newbie tutorial. :p

But then again maybe it's just because it's new and I don't like change. :p

Neither, since in his post he says that someone else designed it, not he.

Go find the original artist and bother them maybe?
