Love the 'star-burst' effect - dynamic, aesthetically pleasing, and not overdone.

Well done!

thanks a lot!

If the new logo really offends your eyes then use that motivation and energy to make one for yourself.

Right, and if you're unhappy about the way your world-class surgeon treats you, you probably start operating on yourself?! ;) (yeah I know, not really the best comparison, but still) I would expect that Apple has some of the best icon designers in the world working for them?! Some people are just a tad disappointed/surprised about the kind of work that they've delivered here. Either they've screwed up or a lot of people, many designers among them, are showing terrible judgment in criticizing the new icon. Let's just see and wait whether everybody will get used to the icon or if Apple will tune it a bit for future iterations. I've already said that I'm kind of getting used to it already - whatever that means.

I like the volume slider, but the "stop light" in the upper left corner is a bad design decisions, even when using graphite it still looks poorly placed.

As for the icon, it doesn't fit because it's very "2d", and does not appear to be of the high-quality standards demonstrated in the other Apple icons which resemble real-world objects.

These changes do not live up to the high aesthetics standards Apple themselves have previously set. I see various replacement icons, they look great, but don't fit, they just made a better version of the current misfit icon.

If you want to make an icon, find a way to make it resemble what iTunes really is now, not just for music, but video, apps and more. Perhaps a hint of a device in the design (even if the corner of) with the music note.

Design can be 'objectively' good or bad but design also is also a matter of personal taste. Maybe Apple's personal taste is moving into a direction its current detractors simply are not happy with.

fair enough :)

A competition? I like that thought! especially if one of the criteria is to keep it simple and incorporate the aqua notation minus the CD! Fun stuff.

I am very afraid that 10.7 is going to look like this. If so, I will not be happy at all.

At the very least, let's all be thankful that 10.7 will never revert back toward this:

Technically, this isn't the first time Apple has changed the iTunes icon:

"We disagree?"

Steve Jobs now uses pluralis majestatis?

PS: What's so pretty about the old icon? The new is not better, not worse, just new.

The new icon looks like clip art from Microsoft office.
Damn, it'd even be ugly for Linux. The new iTunes is vile.

Like many here, I abhor the new icon. I always harboured a dislike for the old iTunes icon, but at least the old one looked like someone had employed some effort in the design. The new one just seems like a lazy attempt at a garish aqua homage.

I left it on my dock for one day. When I could no longer stand the sight of it, I tweaked the design until I found it passable. I kept the icon mostly the same, but darkened the music note, removed the blue background and left the light blue flare behind the note. I've always had a likening for transparent icons. I also tried a couple different colours.

Of course, this entire post is based on individual taste and I am sure many will hate my attempt - Mr. Jobs included.

I am sick and tired of people believing these posts!

You email sjobs@apple.com and of course that is STEVE JOBS emailing you back!

Steve jobs doesn't care what one email says and I HIGHLY doubt that is even his email address!

Those emails are being posted up on MacRumors like they are scripture!

Well, go make it a better place. I wouldn't count your post as a contribution towards that end though.
Agreed.

Plus its someone's job to be worried about this kind of stuff. Some people make their entire livings creating icons. So its not as petty as someone would have it. It is important to someone.

I don't know about the new logo or not...it's a nice change but I don't like how iTunes itself lost all it's color...everything is gray now :/

Am I really the only one who likes it?
I don't think it's amazing or anything, but I certainly don't think it's a step backwards like people are saying.

I like that it now looks like a utility (which it really is) rather then just a niche app.

like everytime, Steve decides for everyone and then he will go back what he decided...

by the past, he was truly convinced that usb and glossy screens were what people wanted (vs firewire and matte screens)

no doubt that the old icon will return...

anyway, i have noticed that Steve's communication strategy is getting worth and worth towards customers and medias....

in only a few years, he went from being a genius, a visionary leader to some kind of egocentric moron...

because in normal use you can't see those small icons.

Yes. So?
Did you read what I wrote?
Why does all the small details in the icon have to be visible at all sizes? The answer is: the don't.

Like I said the basics are still there – the musical note is seen even at smaller sizes.

Why the icon? The entire application needs to be re-branded, let alone split.

CD just kept getting more and more shinny. Personally I liked the one with the green music note.

I take back what I said about the new iTunes icon being blatantly amateurish, it's not quite that bad. In fact, I'm pretty sure what they are trying to do is unify the iTunes icon across the devices & desktops. I think I really just don't like the music note, since it looks like two sixteenth notes that had the line filled in. But, that is the same style of 'musical notes' they use everywhere else so I suppose it makes sense.

It's not like the previous one was so great anyway, people will get used to this.
