First, here's a small disclaimer for those who think they can read 1 post and instantly label someone a 'troll', 'fanboy', 'hater', etc (Which by the way, is pathetic). I own LOTS of macs, and love my iToys. I love Apple's usual work, etc.

That said, on to my post:

Sorry but if you actually agree with Steve then you are just the most narrow minded fanboy around, and are blinded with stupidity.

The icon is crap, period. A junior graphics designer at a budget/startup studio could have knocked up something better in 5 minutes.

If this is the kind of quality input we can expect on the next generation of mac's then its clear Apple is in trouble.

What self conscious idiot would approve such a terrible piece of work...very below the usual Apple standard.

(Go ahead, cry and bitch at me all you like...fact is...it IS *****)

Your right it is awful :D & I'm the ultimate Apple fan, but I cant defend something which I hate and the icon is beyond bad. I'll be honest when I was using Final Cut today, I was confused at why my mp3's had the new itunes icon on, thought it was using some other player I had downloaded, because I forgot about the icon change.

The icon would look much better if it the music note been mixed in with the Airport wireless logo to signify wireless streaming of content & the fact that almost everywhere these days has a wireless access point that would have looked better

The problem was that the disc on the previous logo looked like a Blu Ray disc - so it had to go.

Apple also took the opportunity to move the "stoplight" buttons for closing and resizing the application's window into a space-saving vertical orientation from the standard horizontal orientation.

Wait...what?

*goes and checks*

So they did. WTF? Why?

For everyone whining about it not "fitting in with mail, safari etc.": just put it next to your dashboard-icon, and equilibrium will be regained.

See the resemblance?

I'm 50% agreeing with the guy suggesting a gramophone. The other half recognizes that iTunes is not really about music anymore, so an ancient music-device is even worse for iTunes that is now music, video, books etc.

And people suggesting "iMedia"... Awful name! Send it to Microsoft, they might use it. Apple would do something more along the lines of "iEnjoy" or something. "iCulture". :p

As a graphic designer for over 20 years. I concur: that new logo sucks! It looks like someone created that in about 2 minutes. Let see, "Take generic 2 tone aqua color circle, add musical note . . . . and . . . . there you go! Instant logo. Can I interest you in 20 animated gifs for your web site now?"

I much rather prefer something like this:

P.S. This icon was designed by Chris Carlozzi. He is a link to it.

Apple's new icon is better than that. All that busy work detail is a waste as it is not visible when the icon is being used at its appropriate size.

+1, Thats exactly how I feel. Its annoying when fanboys back Apple up regardless :p.. I think the new icon sucks, we've come to expect much more from Apple.. Mac OS's UI is imo what sets it apart from other OS's

I've criticized the icon after the keynote and had a moment of shock when it was announced, but to be honest, I'm already getting used to it. You just have to position it next to the right icons in your dock and it'll look quite alright.

I don't like it, I figure I'll get used to it though. Already it's not annoying me as much (though now that some one pointed out about it looking good in his doc, I think it is abrupt in mine, doesn't fit with the style of my other icons).

What I do not like is the now very colorless itunes interface. I dunno, it just makes it seem harder to skim over things and it just does not look good imho.

I am amused by some one's comment on here about the logo though sucking all the color out of itunes... it's very appropriate.

I will never understand people freaking out over icons and the new one is still much better then the Adobe icons...

I'm sorry but if you knew about Apple icons you'd know they care ALOT about the icon detail even if its not visible all the time. If your using OS X 10.5 Leopard or 10.6 Snow Leopard go into Applications and view the text edit icon on its max size, that has the writing taken off Apple's famous 1997 Think Different commercial. The Apple pages icon is also impressive in the dock, the glass inkwell jar is transparent around the rim just like a real glass jar. I also love the Leopard icon for a PC on the network :D an UGLY CRT monitor with a BSOD on it LOL

Just sold all my Apple hardware...

Yep - I was really excited when Steve said they changed the icon....

I cried myself to sleep...

I've decided to sell my 30" Apple Cinema Display
My Mac Pro
and my MacBook Pro

I just ordered a Dell with Windows 7...

I cannot believe that Steve did this to us......

IT'S AN ICON! HOLY SHAMOLIE PEOPLE!
LETS PUT THE ENERGY SOMEWHERE ELSE...
<ehem... like me... responding to this ridiculous thread :D>

No, because iTunes is the name everyone recognises. The same way as the iPhone isn't just a phone, and the iPod Touch isn't just an iPod at all. Apple is going towards less specific names, such as "Ping" and "iPad", and even "iPod" wasn't specific in the beginning. However, it's not a good idea to rename things that everyone got used to. Renaming Apple TV to iTV would have worked, since it's not such a big and famous product, and the name would have stayed almost the same (Apple = i). But otherwise, not really.
You mean like PowerMac, Powerbook, and iBook?

I don't have a huge problem with the logo, but the interface as a whole needs a major upgrade. iTunes is getting stale as a program.

Add some yellow and we got us a Winamp icon y'all! :p

"Winamp... It really kicks the llamas _____".

I actually prefer the new one. Looks cleaner to me.

Are you kidding me? The icon may be a bit ugly but the new file bar looks amazing. It reminds me of a Federation computer terminal... which is always welcome in slick Apple products. ;)

Then again, this is all subjective.

The vertical "stoplight" is def. an odd choice for a company that cares so much about uniformity. It kinda screws w/ the user's muscle memory. But I kind of like it better and hope it will become part of 10.7. Maybe that is the idea and iTunes is first to have at it.

The icon though... c'mon. What kind of loser gets excited either way about an icon? Sure the old icon was used for 10 tens and is familiar. The new icon doesn't require a PhD in physics to figure out. Get over it and move out of your parent's basement already.

Am I the only one that always found Apple stock icons ugly ? Seriously, a stamp (Mail), a compass (Safari) a Hammer with some blueprints (Xcode)...

What's creative in using real world objects to represent software ? It looks ugly to me. An icon shouldn't be a real world object, it should just be a snazzy logo.

I like the new icon. I also like the new Quicktime X icon, but I use Mplayer, which has a good one too.

Get to making an option to hide Ping in the sidebar instead, the icon is fine. Cluttering my UI with social network crap is not.
