I think what's annoying most people (me included) is the lack of communication from them. I understand finding a fix might take a while, but a simple "we're working on it, we know there's an issue" would go a long way as opposed to just leaving people in limbo wondering whether they will do anything about it, or just try and let this die down and not address it directly.

It's clearly intentional, and it's worrying.

They won't want to announce a fix is in the works until they are 100% sure they can release one.

If they announced they are working on getting a software fix out in a few days, but then they realise that the fix will either not work at all or wont do very much then they have accepted there is a problem with the device that they must do something about. If a software fix won't work, then they'll have to do something to the hardware - that will be very expensive and could take a while.

Their statements so far have dodged the issue.

Now I am a bit nervous. If this were a simple fix, it would have been fixed by now. Can you imagine the hunreds of engineers at Apples disposal to work on this. From hardware to software, from Apple to ATT, and even outside experts available for consultation. If a fix were imminent, I think they would have released some kind of news feed.

if you read that closely, it is from friday, and also read the first paragraph after the words "Software Fix in the works"

i also noticed apple did this on their forum. They went through all the forums and removed any and all comments relating to any fix, even deleted a thread on how to reproduce the problem.
i am not sure if they are still deleting them but they were

The announcement of selling 1.7 million iPhones over the weekend should quell any rumor that there is going to be a recall. They're not going to boast about their phone sales only to recall it a week later.

Hopefully there's a software fix though.

I was one of those who thought I had a "perfect" phone, or at least a phone that seemed less affected than others. But sure enough, I went somewhere outside my normal day-to-day area this morning, and was easily able to replicate the signal drop.

I very much sympathize with those who live or work in an area where they have to deal with this issue. Hopefully, Apple will release a software fix or do a recall...I can see how this would be incredibly frustrating!

no, he's not reliable. He's an apple zealot/propagandist. Even Gruber thinks he's over-the-top.

Yeah, really.

Imagine if StevieJobz or one of the other apple nutjobs on here had a blog. It would look something like AppleInsider

Why assume that's a good thing?

The way I see it, that's 1.7 million reasons to cover the issue up.

That's quite suspicious, isn't it? And the latest "i rang tech support and this is what they said" threads have been less optimistic.

I've noticed a couple of people saying today that they were told there would not be a software fix (though how much stock you put in either the posters or the tech support people is up to you)

Will this be another iMac screen debacle? Are they just going to wait until the fuss dies down and replace phones only if the customer specifically requests it?

I don't think they wil do or say anything right now. But it will be interesting when it gets close to the 30 day money back expires.

edited to put correct return policy time oops sorry

Yep, there is a hardware issue, and yes it can be solved with a software update.

How?

The two antenna parts that are connected via peoples palms seems to short circuit the antenna, so how to solve this is by disabling the bottom antenna part when the phone is held in your hand. That way the two antennas won't interfere.

Um NO! The bottom portion is the cell networks, EDGE and 3G. They might be able to disable the left side which is WIFI, Bluetooth, and GPS, but that wouldn't work either, what if you are on a call with a Bluetooth earpiece lol?

The problem is with how the baseband is handing off spectrum and switching between them, and the display of bars!

I called Apple today to get a Returns number - really disappointed as I was really looking forward to it after selling my 3GS but after a few days of dropped calls/dodgy signal I can't justify £500 on a Touch!

I am not sure how Apple normal handles returns which have been used but I was told I was getting a full refund. If you are in the UK I wouldn't worry about the 14 or 30 day policy - if you are having ongoing problems which Apple can't resolve, consumer law is extremely clear on this point

Too bad no announcement of a fix/update was announced today. For those still holding out, it would have been announced first thing in the morning, just like that news report of them saying how much they sold over the weekend.

Just an FYI, I tried a little square of scotch tape over the gap and it appears to have helped. Might be worth a try for those, like me, having real issues. You really can't tell it's there unless you know or stare at it. At least until a fix is announced. I'm still leaning towards an exchange in the next few days if nothing is said by Apple.

stay tuned

first the aapl + of sales and then the "fix" later this week

Is apple censoring the existence of this product on their website? Because I see no mention of it on apple's actual forums.

If that is the case than this fiasco has not only turned me off to the iphone 4 but apple as a company. If I cant expect superior customer service and product from apple then why should I be paying their premium prices?

There is an iPhone 4 forum on the Apple site. But, yes, threads disappear frequently.

I've also noticed...

a couple things with my iPhone 4....

1. It takes a long time to connect an outgoing call sometimes.
2. My phone is in a case and even in a case, if I hold it with my hand around it, the signal fades back and forth.

This has got to be a software issue or a serious hardware design flaw.... there are just too many weird things going on. I bet the engineers at Apple have the wrath of Steve breathing down their necks!!!! I wouldn't want to be on the iPhone team that is for sure! :D

Hey

First time poster here as this is my first apple product.

Anyway just been on the phone to customer service, the first guy sounded like he wanted to kill himself (guess he’s getting allot of angry customers) and wasn't very helpful at all. The second person however seemed very helpful, I told her I was having problems with my signal when holding the phone. She said that a temporary solution is to buy a bumper as it "sometimes" works, I told her that I wasn't paying £20 for a temporary solution. She then took the serial number of the phone and my name/email address and said that I was eligible to get a new phone and the new ones (apparently) don’t have the signal issues. She said there on back order as there having to replace allot of faulty phones but I should get an email soon saying when I can pick up my new phone.

Not sure If this will fix the problem but she was very intent that the new ones do work properly and do not lose signal, so we will have to see.

I also asked about the software fix and she said she hasn't heard anything about that.

Anyway so I thought I would just post to let you no that they seem to be replacing faulty handsets, whether they will be fixed is something else but I suppose its better than being told to grip it different or they don’t have any news on a future fix.

Hummmm..... seems as if we would have heard of this by now (on this forum) if there was a hardware swap going on.... not saying you're wrong, but usually MacRumors hears these sort of things the minute they happen.

i have walked out of the att store with a brand new 32gb iphone 4 in a case. there is no way this phone could perform this poorly if there are no issues. in the case holding it normal way i have 2 to no bars in places where my 3gs has full bars and no issues. this is rather aggravating, given Apple's matter of fact response, 'stay tuned' really !!!!! just annoyed with a brand new phone that is well...just a good looking piece of glass at the moment
