Well I thought I'd ring Apple and let them know I had the reception issue with my phone. If only to add one more to their "those with problems" list after reading before that someone in apple support said only a few people were having issues...

I rang the UK support line but got put through to the states. Conversation went something like this...

Support: Hello - what's the serial number of your phone please?

Me: Serial is....

Support: How can I help you today

Me: Hello. I've got problems with my phone dropping the signal when I hold it.

Support: Yes, that's a known issue that happens when your hand touches the bottom left corner of the phone. I will need to put you through to a senior advisor to discuss this - can you hold for 2 mins?

Me: Sure...

Support (2 mins later, same person as before): I have actually just spoken to my advisor and he has authorised me to send you a new phone. Whats your address etc etc

That surprised me! I was expecting use a bumper/hold it differently/wait for software fix - not a new phone!

What do you make of that? It's been my feeling up to now that ALL IP4s have this issue (even if some users haven't noticed it yet or can't reproduce it where they are located). But perhaps it is a faulty batch...

Anyway I'll let you know what the score is with the new phone when it comes.

ola level-spirit

maybe post your thread in the "new" rumours, re. the 1.7m iphone4 sales as well?

This has got to be the BEST marketing ploy EVER!

Build something everyone wants.(CHECK) Sell Millions of units.(check) Create the need for an insanely high margin accessory!(and check)

They sell these "bumpers" for what 29.00? Seriously........they probably cost 1-2 dollars at MOST with shipping.

:apple:Your my hero!

PS: Still waiting for my white i4.

Apple is your hero?

You acknowledge or believe this is a marketing ploy to sell overpriced bumpers by creating a need through hindered reception... and you call Apple your hero?

You really are warped.

I got a replacement, but same problem on that one

Safe to say that they were being sarcastic when praising Apple for something like this.

I got a replacement organsied today. I wont be holding my breath that it'll be any better than the other one, however it's continuing pressure on Apple which I am all in favour of.

"Trolling". Do not post in order to anger other members or intentionally cause negative reactions. For a given post, this can be a subjective call, but a pattern of such posting or an especially egregious case will get you banned. Basically, don't try to pick fights. Knowingly posting false information is also prohibited.

In all seriousness, if that's the actual "rule", how are half of these people still even members of this site, let alone allowed to post? I'm so incredibly tired of the needless, over-the-top sarcasm, insults and all the rest of the garbage that seems to worm its way into every single thread. Am I the only one? Are there any moderators at all? Well, at least moderators that don't engage in same behavior, which is all I've noticed. "This can be a subjective" call seems to be the only part of the above that actually matters. Seems to me that certain people can troll all day, every day according to that definition, and nothing ever happens other than the overall decline of the site. One only need to look as far as any thread that implies any problem with any Apple product or software to find the same old people engaging in the same old insults, denials and sarcasm regardless of the situation or facts so I thought it interesting that the "trolling" rule was brought up as if it's a serious rule that's actually applied with any degree of fairness.

My friend just got off the phone with Apple and he was told that they do not expect any software update. This directly contradicts what I was told yesterday. I'm not sure if any of the AppleCare folk know what they're talking about to be honest.

How did you verify this ?

I have tested the problem on my iPhone 4 when connected to a 2G network at 900MHz and a 3G network at 2100MHz.

The reports have come in from countries and networks that use all sorts of bands for both 2G and 3G coverage - all with the same issue.

It was back on topic until you started talking about trolling again. Does that make you a troll?

COME ON APPLE! ANNOUCE SOMETHING ALREADY!

Probably. Do I care? Not at all. I just wanted a "real' definition since someone decided to the post, in this thread, the obviously laughable posted rule.

P.S. Being partially deaf in my right ear and wanting to hold my phone in the same manner I've held cellphones for the past 10 years, the reception issue hit me hard. So I went to AT&T and bought a case. Looks good, works well, gives me something to grip, keeps the phone from slipping out of my shirt pocket, it's guaranteed for a year and the reception issue is totally gone. Personally, I find it kind of hard to believe that anyone who's being affected by this is more willing to sit around and complain then go buy a case and be done with it. I understand Apple screwed up but would you rather be right or using your phone? In addition, considering that Apple moves at a glacial pace (iPad wifi issues, anyone?), any possible fix could be weeks or months away. I'd imagine they probably have more people working on plugging possible jailbreak holes than any real problem like this one.

I'll check back later about the trolling thing. I don't really care what users think, I want to see a reply from a moderator about why it's a rule when it's obviously not carried out with any degree of fairness.

+1 I was told an announcement would definitely be made last Friday by two levels of techs, didn't happen. I don't think anyone knows what is going on. But it irks me Apple can make a public announcement about sales, but nothing about this issue. If there is not going to be a software fix, just let me know so I can take it back.

Has anyone else noticed that if you are playing a game or carrying your phone in your hand you lose reception and miss calls / text messages? Happened to me yesterday. I guess I have to put my phone in my pocket or hold it with my pinky fingers in order to play games. I missed two texts (showed up 20 mins late) and 1 call yesterday.

Apple employees usually never know about anything Apple does up until minutes before it is released. Also, any tech would be under NDA. For people that use Apples "Back of House" support page they have access to articles that usually contain the phrase "Apple Eyes Only".

Officially!!

Now I am a bit nervous. If this were a simple fix, it would have been fixed by now. Can you imagine the hunreds of engineers at Apples disposal to work on this. From hardware to software, from Apple to ATT, and even outside experts available for consultation. If a fix were imminent, I think they would have released some kind of news feed.

Any fix involving the baseband would need to be tested very carefully. Don't panic.

Is this a joke?

Fixing this issue is of massive importance for apple. It means their reputation, it means a potential recall of over 1.7 million iPhones, it means a really bad quarter for profit, and hugely unhappy stockholders. I think apple is going to wait until the patch is perfect before they release it, because all they need right now is a patch that's only a temporary fix, or that barely works.

With that said, you must understand that i don't have an iPhone yet because it's not available in Canada yet, so for me waiting isn't so painful as it is for you :D

I think what's annoying most people (me included) is the lack of communication from them. I understand finding a fix might take a while, but a simple "we're working on it, we know there's an issue" would go a long way as opposed to just leaving people in limbo wondering whether they will do anything about it, or just try and let this die down and not address it directly.

Officially admission of the issue and their progress to resolve it soon will go a long way to the proper way to handle this issue. So far we have see none from Apple, except blaming the user.
