Mine really is fine, Im flabbergasted at the fuss being made about it all. That and the fact that there are so many left handed people ;)

There are a few things that can be done:
  • See some humor in it like me and enjoy the exchange and inject a sarcastic comment now and then
  • Get angry and leave (which a lot did)
  • Notify the administrators (which probably a lot did too, but these guys and girls also need some sleep after fondling their iPhone4's looking for reception issues...)

OR, you could put both Eso (Go Eso!!!!) and chillin' on your 'ignore' list and enjoy the discussion. Try it! Works well!

Just got off the phone with Apple Care and i was told that: -
  • They are receiving a calls about the issue.
  • The issue is not a hardware issue
  • They are in the process of collecting data about the issue
  • A software fix will probably come in the future after they have collected data
  • Not many people have the issue
  • I should get a bumper
  • I should hold it differently
  • Did I mention I should get a bumper?

I'm taking all of this with a pinch of salt though as I'm pretty sure they don't have a clue in Tech Support. Although they do seem to acknowledge there is a problem and they also seem to believe a software fix is coming and will help.

Thanks for calling me an idiot, Steve. This guy's head is massive at this point. I can't wait till it catches up to him.

Why would there be a software patch if there is no issue....

They did acknowledge there was an issue but I know...tech support must clearly know something Steve doesn't.

Although i think, as others have said, Steve means that the hardware is fine, just the software.

and there i was thinking that this thread is about

"steve jobs denies ip4 reception issues!"?

It used to be, many pages back.

I'm not trolling. I was engaging in intelligent discourse. Yes, I disagreed with some premises laid out by others here, and no that didn't ruin the discussion. What began to ruin the discussion was the attacks on me merely because I disagreed and pointed out some flaws. I understand some don't like it when people disagree with them, but attacking a person for disagreeing is not at all productive.

Read the rules. You are trolling. You made your point over and over many pages ago. We get it. You don’t agree with all the arguments against you. When you get what you want, you want more. This will never end. Please, move on.

"Trolling". Do not post in order to anger other members or intentionally cause negative reactions. For a given post, this can be a subjective call, but a pattern of such posting or an especially egregious case will get you banned. Basically, don't try to pick fights. Knowingly posting false information is also prohibited.

I won’t get in an argument with you about whether or not you’re trolling.

We just needed an excuse to ban him as he's been trolling this thread for hours. I'll take my time-out for the team.

Report away.

Based on what I’ve seen in this thread, nothing is going to happen. Even Arn was in this thread once, and he did nothing.

I hadn't considered that. Now it seems to me I've been very rude. I was trying to get people to suspend judgement... but what gives me the right?
If the majority have decided that they feel there is a problem, then I should have merely dissented, and left it at that.

I really do not relish attention.

Looks like you finally realize the problem, that is if you’re being genuine.

Finally we’re back to the original premise of the thread. Yay!

This has got to be the BEST marketing ploy EVER!

Build something everyone wants.(CHECK) Sell Millions of units.(check) Create the need for an insanely high margin accessory!(and check)

They sell these "bumpers" for what 29.00? Seriously........they probably cost 1-2 dollars at MOST with shipping.

:apple:Your my hero!

PS: Still waiting for my white i4.

So "furiously working on it" has changed to "collecting data about it"
A "software update next (this) week" has changed to "a software fix will probably come in the future"

Not many people have the issue??? lol - since when has thousands (and possibly tens/hundreds of thousands) of people not been many...it's been on the front page of every sizeable news organisation on the planet.

I am feeling less and less confident that this will be fixed.

I found this a little odd

I ordered the dock and a black bumper on June 15th. The dock wasn't supposed to ship until July 2nd and the bumper was going to to ship June 24th. Well both ended up shipping June 24th and fedex tracking shows the dock shipped a few hours before the bumper, both from Shenzhen. This morning I checked and the bumper is out for delivery, while the dock is still in Anchorage. Apple must have stepped up delivery for the bumpers considering the signal loss issues.

Good Read.

Makes a lot of sense:

Probably why the issue is visible to some and not others.

http://steve.grc.com/2010/06/26/iphone-4-external-antenna-problem/

AT&T uses two different frequencies bands (850 & 1900). My theory is that the shorting of the iPhone 4 antennas at the lower left corner causing a detuning that only affects one of these frequency bands. Thus why some users cannot replicate the issue. Their specific location is not serviced by the affected frequency band.

That would make sense until you throw in the mixture of people who are using their iPhone in a country with another set of frequencies entirely.

O2 in the UK uses 900MHz and 1800MHz for 2G, and 2100MHz for 3G. Other UK networks are similar.

I think it will be an iOS 4 fix. It will come down the pipe later today, or tomorrow morning. Most likely just a graphical fix on their part to show that the bars aren't dropping, so people will get over it.

How will a graphical fix solve my problem, which involves my iPhone 4 completely losing its network signal when held in my left hand. It drops from a reasonable signal, to NO signal. No hard-coded bars are going to solve that.

Here's my take on this conversation:

  • They graciously validated my time and energy spent making the phone call to them, so I would be more open and understanding to what they had to tell me.
  • They do not want to admit that their awesome engineering design could ever be flawed.
  • They are thinking about how they will be able to place blame elsewhere without negatively affecting stock prices and their image too much.
  • If it will prove beneficial to their image, a software fix may probably come in a month or two, afterall known critical security patches usually take 1-2 months to fix by Apple.
  • Again, they do not want to admit that their awesome engineering design could ever be flawed.
  • They would be extremely happy if you paid them yet even more money.
  • This reception problem...it's actually your fault.
  • Did I mention they really want me to give them more of my money?

How does that throw out my theory ? It only further backs it up. This detuning probably only affects the lower or upper frequency bands.

Well I thought I'd ring Apple and let them know I had the reception issue with my phone. If only to add one more to their "those with problems" list after reading before that someone in apple support said only a few people were having issues...

I rang the UK support line but got put through to the states. Conversation went something like this...

Support: Hello - what's the serial number of your phone please?

Me: Serial is....

Support: How can I help you today

Me: Hello. I've got problems with my phone dropping the signal when I hold it.

Support: Yes, that's a known issue that happens when your hand touches the bottom left corner of the phone. I will need to put you through to a senior advisor to discuss this - can you hold for 2 mins?

Me: Sure...

Support (2 mins later, same person as before): I have actually just spoken to my advisor and he has authorised me to send you a new phone. Whats your address etc etc

That surprised me! I was expecting use a bumper/hold it differently/wait for software fix - not a new phone!

What do you make of that? It's been my feeling up to now that ALL IP4s have this issue (even if some users haven't noticed it yet or can't reproduce it where they are located). But perhaps it is a faulty batch...

Anyway I'll let you know what the score is with the new phone when it comes.
