Mate, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, stop making up what I say!! Where, WHERE did I say Windows 95 is a concept? Where??

And you suddenly mention Microsoft Surface????? What the hell are you on about??

You said: "Who did the iPad before Apple? No one did."

You are CLEARLY talking about a PRODUCT, not a bloody concept!

Tell you what? Have you never seen these?

Image

And how on Earth is this related to Job's statement from 1983?

Can you please do choose from the following:

1) Agree with me
2) Disagree with me and state that that idea was new at the time (proof here)
3) Disagree with me and state that although the idea wasn't new he introduced some new concepts (proof here)

Please please please stop writing irrelevant posts.

Thanks in advance.

AH!

you -- And you suddenly mention Microsoft Surface????? What the hell are you on about??

me - For you to learn about abstract/concept.

you - You said: "Who did the iPad before Apple? No one did."

me - What is a vision, when you cannot materialize your dream?

you - Tell you what? Have you never seen these?

me - Are those from 1983? No, you would’t get it. Remember you wrote similar - which means resembling without being identical, which is what Samsung is after.

me - i already did!

Since when we are discussing that the idea was new on itself without the context - the iPad?
Ever heard that the road is where the good juice is?

you - 2) Disagree with me and state that that idea was new at the time (proof here)

me - i already did. It is Apple Raison d'être since the late 70s. But in the context of the iPad it is something new, I never heard him say - ’’ a computer in a book ’’ which could be anything but the iPad actually.

you - 3) Disagree with me and state that although the idea wasn't new he introduced some new concepts (proof here)

me - I guess you are not reading. Guess you should learn about the word abstract. What is the hell a computer in a book?
The iPad?
The iPad is not a cul-de-sac. Second time i wrote that.

My head is going to explode in a second. I refuse to continue any discussions with you if only want to post nonsensical, illogical statements that have nothing to do with my original statement. You think if you entail some fancy words in your posts you suddenly can turn your nonsensical arguments into something substantial.

You have not proven that the idea was new at the time.

You have not proven that anything in Job's concept in 1983 was new at the time.

Until you do that, don't bother posting anything.

Just like samcraig said:

What a computer in a book means?

What Job concept beside saying computer in a book?

The same to you.

You move the goalpost enough - and you can be right. The problem is - so many of your assertions are incorrect. You discount some things but give credit to others. Your logic and argument is flawed.

Let us try this step by step, maybe we will get there eventually:

Please tell my what was new about that idea at that time (1983)?

And do not even try to talk about anything else, don't flood me with a river of nonsense. Just simple try to answer my question in one or two sentences.

Learn what abstract means. A computer in a book was brewed by who?

Tell me THIS:

What is a computer in a book!
Only Jobs can answer that!

We discuss here using suppositions. Remember that.

Be honest, it is easy and does not hurt.

Those examples as i stated were to teach you and serve as proof that Steve is a genius, a thing you denied. If it hurt you i’ll not apologize. We are all grown ups.

*Sigh* I'm not sure if it's because of a language barrier but we are clearly not getting anywhere.

Have a nice day.

That's funny, did you read that book? Because actually those devices were not mentioned there. Moreover it was developed concurrently with Stanley Kubrick's film version and published after the release of the film.

Read books, don't just google, please.

I know this is off-topic, but as a sci-fi geek (from reading actual books) I have to applaud you. 2001 was inspired by a short story (by Clarke) which covers only the first short part of the movie, up to the point where the obelisk sends out a signal. Everything from there was a collaboration with Clarke and and Kubrick.

But he and most people only credits the set to Kubrick ( which he build and with input from the writer ).
The movie was a close collaboration.

The book i think come after the movie not credited to Kubrick.

These guys could, back in 1994.

Genius? Maybe. Smart? Definitely. Whatever he is, he's certainly wasn't the only one in the industry.

Seriously, people. Lets quit with the abject hero worship.

:D: Who say that?
Jobs was a human being, a person. Humans are imperfect by nature. His detractors forget that.

Please, computer in a book could be anything.
This is not about who reached there FIRST.
It is about someone dream. Someone who actually gather smart people around him.

Einstein said: imagination is more important than knowledge.
But putting your dream to use is better.

1. The titled of the article states he envisioned the iPad. You stated that the title is correct. You also stated that no one knows what Jobs meant when he said that. You then state that a computer in a book could be anything. That's the point. The title is NOT correct. Your logic is flawed.

If this isn't about who reached there first - what exactly are you arguing? I'm not sure if it's the language barrier or what - but I see post after post of yours and I can't figure out what your actual POINT is.

Nice catch, looks like you actually read.

Actually there is no flaw.

Because of this:

iPad is the most accurate machine to portrait Apple’s Raison d'être:

++ Simplest machinery, i wrote about it in the post before.
It is just obvious

I also wrote that the iPad is not a cul-de-sac. it is not perfect, it could be the starting point but NOT IT. Why?
Because they are improving it.

That explains it. Computer in a book ( book is something you can carry around, have some limitations like the iPad. But a book is more friendly, no learning curve. 20 min, i know! And WHY he did not like stylus, of course!!!)

Why use stylus in a book?!
Ummnn,
never thought about that.

What i am arguing?

looks like i jumped into conclusions about you actually reading.

Bezetos first stated that Jobs is not a genius because the idea of a tablet was not his.
I argued that innovation is not about who reached that first. And asked why Jobs is denied by him that label.
Not being able to counter-argument he flipped.
I even gave examples, Galileo, Da Vinci, Picasso, Isaac Newton et all ( all genius who didn’t arrive there first ), even asked how come you can point out accurately who thought it ( it being anything ) first.
Patents fill that void. The reason i brought C. Colombo, he patented the ’’discovery’’ of something that was never lost, and that was habitable, the horror.

Hope you get the joke, Bezetos did not.
Hope language is not a barrier for you, and that you think by yourself.
This is not a contest, it is just a jamming party.

I envisioned projectors built into ipads and smart phones.
That would be sweet to bring a 40 in TV in your pocket.

I don't buy all that rhetoric about Apple's customers being 'followers' and 'clones'. Apple still produces damn fine products, and that's still a compelling reason to buy.
But yes, I think brand perception has been changing for some time. On the positive side, you have a whole new generation discovering the beauty of Apple's products—logical and user-friendly interfaces, sleek hardware, and careful attention to every detail of the user experience. On the other hand, you have growing disenchantment amongst various groups of users and developers, in reaction to perceived anticompetitive practices and Apple's controlling nature, including its apparent desire to own and control every potential revenue stream associated with its devices. Now that Apple is the big guy, it should be working extra hard to shake the big bully image, and try to preserve (or perhaps win back) its image of empowering people to be free of restrictive and difficult to use technology. If they don't, the brand is in a lot of danger I think. I'm not saying Apple is in danger as a company—they have so much cash and momentum now they will be around for a long time—but will they be liked, or just tolerated?

An observation I share. On a side note, isn't it rather strange that despite APPLE's relatively meager combined Desktop and Laptop market penetration of ~10%, they are now perceived to be the 'big bully', while MICROSOFT, judging by many recent posts here, seems to be (re)gaining some respect. Perhaps having the world's largest Market-Cap is not an endearing quality.

Where do people like you come from, just curious, as I take your comment as if because another man had a vision of a similar device that looked more to me like an early attempt at a LapTop. Which is a great vision for that time! However I do think this is a great vision of Jobs that came to be. The Newton was a failure needed, you Learn from mistakes and I think the Newton gave a lot of insight to what would later help with iPhone & ipad?:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::cool:

I come from Sweden, for whatever that is worth. And, the problem with the article is that it tries to make a big deal out of Jobs thinking about these things in the 80's, whereas it really is not. In this particular sense, Jobs was not an exception, rather visions like these were norm.

P.S. A computer thats like a book sounds less like an ipad and more like a clamshell device to me. But hey, why not take the interpretation that sounds more awesome? After all, Jobs invented life itself.

----------

Steve took the concept, added his own ideas to it, and turned it into a marketable successful product.

Without Steve Jobs, tablets would have remained in the Stone Age (windows Tablets).

Pure bullcrap. Look at Bill G. vs. Jobs at ATD 2007(?). On stage, Bill G goes on to state that tablets will become mainstream in 5 years (i.e., 2012). Problem with early MSFT tablets is that they went too early to market. (However, i think even they recognized that. Geeks - rather than marketers - as they were, they just did not see it as a reason not to push it anyway). Not that MSFT has an inability of "getting it". Geez, just look at all the exciting things coming out of MSFT research whether its courier, surface, optical screens, perspective based direct eye projections etc. MSFT may not have the taste of Apple, but dont mistake that for an inability of seeing where technology is heading (especially when it is in plain sight, contrary to "popular MR" belief).

That's exactly what I thought. I think he was referring more to the Macbook Air than the iPad. I don't even think he was even considering tablets until the early
2000's.

I am sure he was. In fact, i am sure that pretty much anyone within the technology scene at that time was. And if not all, certainly Jobs. No way he would not pay attention to the developments at PARC and other research cites. He was way too smart for that.

----------

If people actually think.
Yes, do Think.

Throw out your Apple disdain and personal snakiness.

Lets think!

What is Happy Accident?
Why it is called Happy?

Do you know that the transistor was a happy accident?

Look out the history of Semiconductor, it is called a happy accident because people were after such thing, otherwise they would have been not able of recognizing it.

Creativity activities are stream of consciousness ( i borrow that from the coolest man alive! - Thurston Moore - him talking about what is music ), and to add up people go to school for what?

What is apple’s mind set?
-- To make the simplest machinery, no, it is NOT original. But it is no less genial …

Please give Apple credit for What it does and for what it took from others as well from what others took from it

The word you are looking for is serendipity.

serendipity |ˌserənˈdipitē|
noun
the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way: a fortunate stroke of serendipity | a series of small serendipities.
ORIGIN 1754: coined by Horace Walpole, suggested by The Three Princes of Serendip, the title of a fairy tale in which the heroes “were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of.”

Star trek, next generation, started in 1987 - they used a tablet often.

Perhaps other show also had smooth surface touch tablet mock-ups before '83, but it's impressive to me, that Mr. Jobs was talking about a real product years before star trek showed it as something that fit into the distant future about a start craft.

Jobs, Joe Schmo and probably thousands more, in the bay area alone. Impressive indeed.

Trust me you havent seen a real troll yet im on the bottom of the pole.

No, I have, but the troll threshold here is much lower. I saw a guy use a botnet to spam a Minecraft server with chat messages, and he kept saying stuff like "LOLOLOL minty05 is crying liek a baby".

No, he did not build, he explained it - mathematically. Remember people had measured the earth before!
Who Google’s now?

Charles Darwin explained it with on-the-ground work.
Ford did not build the first automobile, the first was inspired by a locomotive actually.

Parallelisms are there to state the obvious.
- Since when being a genius means the first one?
- Can you really spot the first one ( truism isn’t it ), isn’t that obvious?

Can you really say that Colombo was the person that discovered the continent now called America, if you take in account how continents were occupied?

Understand why i am repeating the same parallelisms?
OH!

When did Jobs said he was in the journey of building the first tablet?
A tablet is a computer ( a shrunk one as many people dreamed before, because the first modern computer, made in England for the War was BIG. Can you spot who thought first in making them to fit your hand? - you CANNOT! ), and computers exist for thousands of years, since the beginning of agriculture, the irrigation mechanism is a mechanic computer.

And back to above responses.

Darwin is not my favorite topic, so i might be wrong in saying that you are mistaken. Darwins claim to fame is and was never the theory of evolution, but rather the mechanism through which evolution is explained: i.e., natural selection. Prior to Darwins seminal work, it was commonly believed that traits developed in response to the environment were passed on the future generations. Darwin showed them wrong (in fact, he flipped this view up side down). That was his main contribution to science.

Stop being dishonest.

The iPad as a context justifies the tittle.

We cannot. That is the point people are trying to drive home. Jobs said "fluff". Fluff that others had already said. Thus, we have no reason to assume that he "envisioned the iPad in 1983".

Second, even if he didnt say fluff and actually were on point, carefully elaborating on his concept in effect describing the ipad, that in itself would probably still not qualify as particularly visionary, given that others were saying similar things and exploring the very same trends.

The teleporter example is spot on, actually. Even if a write up a detailed technical paper on its inner and outer workings, i would hardly be a visionary if what i wrote were essentially other peoples words regurgitated through my pen.

That said, if Jobs would have achieved the latter (not saying fluff) the head line would at least be correct. Then we could safely say that Jobs indeed envisioned the iPad in 1983. As it stands, i call baloney. Doesnt stop him from having a basic idea of where technology is heading though, just like i am not stopped from thinking about future trends in manufacturing or travel.

I just wish people would stop this Steve this Steve that, I miss Steve cr@p like they knew him personally... It's so pathetic...
Also, the visionary word is getting on my nerves
Saint Steve Jobs hasn't performed any miracle yet? like fixing all the defective rMBPs displays at once???
That guy was a narcissistic predator nothing less.
Nobody talks about Steve Wozniak the guy that actually envisioned and built the Apple computer...

Read books, please.
Writer Arthur C. Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey.

And Indians were writing science-fiction thousands years before europeans, involving UFOs, robots and all kind of today futurism.

Again the post did NOT say - Steve Jobs and Apple invented ’’Tablets’’.

Get a clue, please. Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke worked on 2001: A Space Odyssey concurrently. Kubrick's screenplay was finished before the novel.
