wow .. all of Apple going AT&T ... *silence*

also, now I am curious to know how much this gadget is actually costing Apple to manufacture .. if it is anything like $250, wouldn't a $250 cash bonus be a better 'gift'? Apple and AT&T are milking it for all its worth and more aren't they? .. .phewww

anyways ... Jobs done it again ... kudos to him .. :)

I was just going to say this. Steve's comment means aaaaabsolutely nothing. I think I've heard him say this at every keynote, and every time he's interviewed about Mac hardware. Don't think this actually means there is any fantastic hardware "in the pipeline".

Yes, we've heard that kind of rhetoric many times before, and people have been pretty much disappointed and unimpressed when new products have arrived.

Will this be ongoing? ie if someone.. say .. ME ... get's a job with apple this fall... part time.. after a year do I get a free iphone? :) that'd be niiice... and gen2...wootwoot

bummer, i almost had a job at an apple store, until they found out i was 17 :(
But cool for the apple employees
First they all get new shuffles, now iphones, whats next? Octo core mac pros for all employees?

Actually...

Closer to 4 and a half million :D

A good tactic. Probably a lot of Apple employees will evangelize even more emphatically once they have one in their hands. I can see this benefiting the company in a lot of ways, and it doesn't cost an outrageous amount of money -- what, $10,000, if that? But it looks really good.

A $250 cash bonus would result in puzzled "huh?"s and "why'd they bothers?" echoing throughout the world. This makes Apple look like they're giving away $600 phonesx18,000, rather than $4500 or whatever.

Edit: Ignore me -- I forgot to carry, like, an exponent or something. WTF?

Agreed. What is Jobs thinking? You don't go cheerleading at a private employee meeting! How inapproriate! The guy is nuts.

And yes, people are usually "pretty much disappointed and unimpressed" by every new Mac that comes along

Surely the Mac is doomed (still, as always). Steve's confidence in front of his employees proves it. At least now we know Apple has no new Macs in the pipeline :p

I wonder what the employee discount for the iPhone plan is. I wish my company would give me a $600 device for free :). Tho technically it would have to be declared as income, so it would cost the employees some money.

CUPERTINO, June 28 - In other news, Apple Inc. has gone bankrupt because the company could no longer function when employees could no longer contact each other. This has been attributed to the fact that they were all using the same phone carrier, AT&T, which has completely **** service.

...yet can still manage to slap Verizon in the face, like the slut it is. ;)

I wonder if they'll have any left over for the people who actually make them? Although seeing as how they live where they work and only a few hours to themselves every day they might not need a phone.

I've actually been to several of these places. The dark side of what we're able to enjoy. Still, I want one of those phones.

There's always something in the pipeline. Otherwise you've just got a lot of idle employees :)

"The first leg is the Mac business, which Steve addressed by saying that they have the "best Macs" in the new product pipeline ever right now"

Apple *ALWAYS* say this...!! They have to really, they can't say otherwise.. i.e., "we've got a few lame iMac updates coming up.. etc etc".

Isn't it sort of true though? Personally I've thought that, for the most part, each iMac revision has been better then the last.

How much does Apple get from the monthly charges?

I was thinking Steve Jobs was insane for giving this many iPhones away to that large of a company. But then I remembered Apple's getting a portion of monthly charges, or something, no? So while it seems like a lot of money to give away inititally, they're going to get a LOT of that money back in the long run.

Bummer if you were an Apple employee dying to get the phone right away... you'd have to wait a month! But I guess I'd wait way longer for one if it was free... ;)

1,000,000 iPhones

I wonder who will have a bigger opening Ratatouille or the iPhone....

Let the race begin.

But they still have to pay those outrageous data rates! And for phone service! For two years! They could buy a macbook for that!

The data plans are very competitive.

They're only seem outrageous to those who have never had to deal with cell-phone data plans before.
