yes, the quality will be horrible.

this is stupid.

what is stupid? YouTube has ALWAYS had horrible quality...you're surprised by this!? Sorry Steve didn't announce a 3Ghz 30" iMac at All Things Digital...just didn't seem like the right venue...but hey, there's always WWDC!

It's not about style, it's about business. By now, he's heard all the uproar about the iPhone's shortcomings - the most obvious one being the lack of the next gen. mobile internet... now he's trying to justify the decision to omit 3G.

Yeah maybe, but it sounds to me like he's in support of using those technologies, not swatting them aside.

Sounds like great news generally. A week to get used to the typing interface? let's hope that's a worst case figure.

Pretty cool interface
I like how they highlight the interface rather than an actual video. Seriously, I wouldn't want a YouTube web vid up on my 80-inch screen. That's gotta look like crap, no?

And when did that partnership happen anyways??

does he really expect people to watch youtube on their 60" HDTV's? Thats why its stupid. And no, I was not expecting a big announcement. Actually expecting nothing...

Um... I've been able to do that for a long time now. It is called the Nintendo Wii Opera Browser...

Good for you, I can't stand the interface on the Wii Opera Browser, and I'd rather not have to switch sources and all that jazz to get to YouTube if I really want to watch YouTube clips. I prefer all my media on my media device...in this case my AppleTV...and my games on my game console. But that's me. You may be into using the WiiMote to try and control the browser from your couch, but I prefer a simple Apple remote.

Do you actually expect anything on YouTube to be WORTH watching at higher resolution than what it already has? I watch 720x480 clips on my 105" (beat your 80" xfiftyfour...;))screen and I don't have a problem with it. I watch media for content, not for how pretty it looks.

Youtube was bought out by Google. As we know, Google and Apple are good buddies now.

*Edit* LOL, let's all reply to that post... :)

Through Google.
If I'm not mistaken youtube got bought up by Google and Google is giving it to Apple.

And the hobby is Apple TV

This sort of lack of enthusiasm for the Apple TV is a kiss of death. I wonder if early sales figures show it's failing, and this comment is just to make not look so bad.

Hey, does anybody know if the Apple/YouTube thing happened WHEN GOOGLE BOUGHT YOU TUBE!@!!?!??? Seriously, like 10 replies all saying the same thing...wow.

I think some people (like myself) are just a tad disappointed, especial;y if this is his only announcement because as i said earlier, this has already been ala not quite as nice looking interface. now if :apple: tv could upscale the video, that might be nice

That what i thought, sounded like he was saying they (cingular at the time) wanted this phone because it took advantage of their new 3G network (but thats not how the phone was announced)

When Google bought YouTube

You get "support" from this:

They did it for two reasons: first is because music on phones hasn't been successful so far, they wanted to do something good with music on phones. The second reason is more profound: they have spent and are spending a fortune to build these 3G networks, and so far there ain't a lot to do with them. People haven't voted with their pocketbooks to sign up for video on their phones. These phones aren't capable of taking advantage of it. You've used the internet on your phone, it's terrible! You get the baby internet, or the mobile internet -- people want the REAL internet on their phone. We are going to deliver that. We're going to take advantage of some of these investments in bandwidth.

To me, that sounds like 3G bashing (with valid arguments, albeit), and a justification on why they opted to stay with EDGE instead. But honestly, on a $500 phone, I don't care whether it's the most utilized tech RIGHT NOW - it's the best out there and should be included regardless. The "REAL" internet has its shortcomings on a phone, too - one of which is you're not necessarily guaranteed a Wi-Fi spot everywhere you go.

Walt: Statistically? In reality? In this dimension? So that makes you an enormous Windows software developer.

Jobs: It's like giving a glass of ice water to somebody in hell!

so, take your favorite movie of all time.

compress it to upload to youtube.

turn on your 105", tune in to youtube, and watch it.

Do you enjoy that movie now?

I like how he says the iPhone has the full ver of OSX on there just with a different UI.

Thats what I wanted to hear!

Great, youtube on AppleTV. Now you can watch 320x240 videos on your 1280x720p or 1920x1080p TV! WHO GIVES A ****

Get the ****ing HD downloads on iTunes already, and the number of AppleTVs sold will increase by at least 5x.

You even highlighted the parts I was referring to. How nice!

"so far there ain't a lot to do with them."

SO FAR...nobody has a device like the iPhone that is WORTH taking advantage of those services.

These phones aren't capable of taking advantage of it. You've used the internet on your phone, it's terrible!

Right, because the PHONES out there right now are total crap. And the internet IS terrible on my phone. It doesn't have the screen or UI of the iPhone, hence why 3G is the perfect venure for more advanced features the iPhone is MEANT to take advantage of.

people want the REAL internet

RIGHT, and 3G IS the real internet...ANYWHERE WITH CELL SERVICE...AT BROADBAND SPEEDS!!! Not everywhere by me has Wi-Fi yet and cities aren't blanketed yet. What if I'm driving out to the boonies for a shoot and I get lost. I'd rather be loading up Google Maps on 3G than Edge any day.

I have a feeling we'll get a reg iPhone and Europe will get the 3G phone first.

The only reason I would even use EDGE would be if I couldn't get a WiFi signal ..which isn't very often.
