Maybe this was discussed already or I am missing something, but based on this answer "If you come to WWDC we're rolling out our new version of OSX -- massive investments in desktops" wouldn't it seem that we might not get MBP updates at WWDC after all?

The lack of rumors for new macpros is disturbing me. I am looking to buy soon, but the base models haven't been touched in almost a year. I hope this "massive investments in desktops" means an update across the board and not just the iMac. :(

i'll be waiting as long as it takes. wwdc- probably the bless won't come that fast. november together with os10.5- i hope so.
waiting for upgrades in:
> cpu cache (octocore with the current shared cache isn't actually a serious upgrade)
> firmware raid (built-in or reliable external solution from apple)!!!
> hdd=10000rpm!!!!
> video card
> fb ddr->ddr3

the tasks i'm doing are
• memory dependent- 3d modelling mostly, then photoshop, aperture
• highly cpu dependent- 3d rendering- maxwell, cinema4d, artlantis. even few minutes in the rendertime makes a BIG difference- thus i need maxeeeed... but than the sad realization that the current MAC PRO ISN'T PRO ANYMORE. at least not the best that apple can produce.

I think "real" internet means a Wi-Fi connection because it's Jobs that's saying it. He's not including 3G.. at least he hasn't publicly said he is, anyways. Therefore, if he's talking about "REAL" internet that "[Apple] is going to deliver" he is clearly not talking about 3G - he's referring to Wi-Fi.

My point all along is the 3G IS "REAL" internet.. and should be included on a $500 phone - regardless of whether or not it's utilized to its fullest right this moment. Does Jobs think that people aren't going to be keeping their iPhone for years? I don't know about anyone else, but if I dish out $500 on a phone, I'm not upgrading for at least 2 years.. by then, I'm going to be VERY frustrated by the lack of 3G.

ok i see i have a different understanding of "real" internet. In my opinion it doesn't matter how you connect to the internet. Even edge should be fast enough to do some browsing.
I think "real" internet is aout the experience. If you try to surf the internet with a normal mobile phone it will be either some crippled WAP pages or the screen is so small, you can't even read a thing. So the browsing experience on phones is very bad.
But if you have a Real Browser on the iPhone you can also browse the internet for Real.

I think that is what Jobs means if he talks about "real" internet.

If not at WWDC, then it'll be close to. I think Apple pushed the MB updates to capitalize on grad sales.. but I can't imagine they'll leave their portable line like this for very long. Right now, the middle MB (high-end white one) is a better buy than the MBP. That's crazy.

Sounds to me like there will be "massive" updates to a lot of Macs at WWDC..I believe it.Just bought a new MacPro.always happens..

I hope I'm waiting for a new desktop. Hopefully one actually is a desktop.

This sort of lack of enthusiasm for the Apple TV is a kiss of death. I wonder if early sales figures show it's failing, and this comment is just to make not look so bad.

It's actually being grounded for once and I liked seeing that out of Jobs. Mediacenter extenders haven't quite caught on yet and the AppleTV has more restrictions than the windows ones. I can say this, if the Mac had first party PVR/TV tuner software and the iTunes movies had a burn to Disk option like the music does or had a movie subscription service I would definitely consider the AppleTV, even with the rather steep price. Without, I honestly don't have much use for the device.

I hope it means that Apple has figured out that it has been neglecting a lot of traditional desktop users and is going to improve their lineup to make their desktops as desirable as their notebooks and all in ones.

if i remember they were updated within a few months ago...

The problem is there is nothing to update it to. Apple already has an exclusive on the fastest processor available 3GHz 8-Core Xeon. The only thing they could possibly do is perform a price drop or add extra ram.

Dude, don't think so PC. There are plenty of innovations to do that don't involve faster processors.

RIGHT, and 3G IS the real internet...ANYWHERE WITH CELL SERVICE...AT BROADBAND SPEEDS!!! Not everywhere by me has Wi-Fi yet and cities aren't blanketed yet. What if I'm driving out to the boonies for a shoot and I get lost. I'd rather be loading up Google Maps on 3G than Edge any day.

Um, no. You must live in a city. I do plenty of driving in the country. If you have a cell signal it's more than like CDMA if it's a mountainous area. If you're lucky you'll get a 1xRTT connection on it. No 3G at all. You might find an open WiFi signal though. Except for the 35% of households that still have dial-up.

This is an important tradeoff between security and openness. We want both. We're working through a way... we'll find a way to let 3rd parties write apps and still preserve security on the iPhone. But until we find that way we can't compromise the security of the phone.

This is such crap. They'll find a way to extract money for each app sold or protect AT&T from VOIP - that's what he means. My Treo is an open platform and there are no security problems. My next phone will be Palm's Linux entry and that'll be the same.

Im so frustrated, i owned 3k in apple when it was 12 bux back about 3 years ago.

I'm getting an iPhone, and just to make it clear to everyone, they will be coming out with an iPhone mini and nano for the masses. They are going to have a similar model with the iPhone as they do the iPod to fit all user price ranges.

if i remember they were updated within a few months ago...

if you read my post carefully the specs i'm actually concerned in are:
> cpu cache (octocore with the current shared cache isn't actually a serious upgrade)
> firmware raid (built-in or reliable external solution from apple)!!!
> hdd=10000rpm!!!!
> video card
> fb ddr->ddr3
ALL OF THEM!

the ONLY thing updated was cpu. with shared cache 4MB- the same as quadro. nononono!!!!

I thought the most exciting comment was the part about how Steve hoped to be able to work with developers to get their apps on the iPhone. it sounded like apple is looking into some sort of verification program to be able to get at least some 3rd party apps on there. Here's hoping we'll see Skype so I can ditch my cingular contract altogether and just use wifi.

$300 to watch YouTube, eh? Interesting.
You could just as well call it "$0 to watch YouTube" since they are adding that new feature at no charge.

The proper question is how many people will consider the combination of all Apple TV features to be worth the price of the device. By adding more features Apple increases that number.

Yup...

Great, youtube on AppleTV. Now you can watch 320x240 videos on your 1280x720p or 1920x1080p TV! WHO GIVES A ****

Get the ****ing HD downloads on iTunes already, and the number of AppleTVs sold will increase by at least 5x.

Another way of saying content is king. If Apple has to push youtube as the elixir to its life, you can pull the plug on it by year's end.

That dog don't hunt.

He sounds on top form Steve.

But I think it was a bit strange for the fact he was willing to disclose so much of what they are working on:

- New Desktops at WWDC
- New iPods
- YouTube for :apple: TV (pre-release)
- HD for iTunes

etc.

Is the veil of secrecy lifting?

He needs some more ammo for his thing with Gates tomorrow...as people say "Its goin' down bihatch" (this is sometimes followed by -shiznizwizzlebizzlekizzlederizzle)

You can see how streetwise I am :p

The first one is the one that was the only secret, really. The second one was loaded, it is the iPhone. He stated a minute later that it was the greatest iPod ever(also in his keynote, "The best iPod ever created with widescreen and touch screen. A phone. And a portable internet reader.") The third one isn't anything HUGE, so why not blow it out now? And the last, I didn't recall him saying that, and it has been expected.

I agree that is crazy. I really hope we see the MBP update as it is something I have been waiting for a long time. I am still on my PowerBook and have been waiting for the type of update we are supposed to see with LED and santa rosa. I would love to have that MBP for the next couple years as they transition into the next major phase of micro-architecture technology.

Not really on topic, but...

I couldn't find a better place to report this, so: I clicked on an ad for refurbished Macs at the Apple store, in the ad space on the left, and the page loaded into it (the ad space iframe). That's definitely not how it's supposed to work. Also, the page it loaded wasn't specifically refurbished Macs, but that's probably a totally different thing. I'm using Safari (though I assume it does the same with anything).

I believe Jobs was referring to reliability when he used the word security, although that might be an issue too. He was saying that he doesn't want any old 3rd party program on the phone that will crash it.

I have a Treo too, and it does regularly crash depending on what program I use, some worse than others. I live with it because I can work around it, but Average Joe or Grandma Jane won't want a phone that blanks out in the middle of a call for 3 minutes to reboot.
