Obviously the correct solution here is a switch in Settings so those of us who want to view a site that requires Flash player can do so. Anyone who argues against this is just a fanboy.

Not all companies can afford to rewrite their sites into HTML5 this year and many of us would like the full web in the meantime. We're big boys, we can manage our batteries just fine.

Why bother? If Apple can help to kill it faster then they should.

Flash 10.1 has hardware decoding

Incorrect, the 10.1 beta had hardware decoding; the actual release did not. As to your other point earlier up, the Mac platform is just as open software-wise as Windows.

As to. Your other point, I also own PCs and I have then crash at least once a week due to flash.

In your original post you state that your battery will drain faster using flash, then you respond to another poster that it won't. I would have done multiple quotes, but I'm on my iPad and I didn't feel like going through the process on this device.

Yeah so everyone can cry why is their battery dying so fast, or why their phone keeps crashing on sites that just have flash ads but the site isnt in flash.

Especially if someones parent or grandparent who is not tech savvy does not know about that kind of thing is always wondering why their battery is dying after an hour or two of viewing flash sites.

They will think its broken. Its not you Apple worries about not being able to manage their batteries, its the mom and dads who dont know the first thing about it. Have you ever done tech support before or tried to explain something technical to one of your parents or even grandparents?

Also, aren't their virus's tied to flash as well?

How about this: default=off.

Apple has included notes in the UI about things like 3G leading to increased battery life. I don't see why they can't do the same for Flash.

Problem solved, even for your parents.

My experience with the iPad is why I want Flash:

My parents couldn't figure out why they kept seeing a blue block instead of the photo slideshows they were used to on a laptop.

And my daughter wonders what's "magic" about a device that isn't able to go to all her kid's websites and games that are written in Flash. ("Thanks, Dad, but I'll keep my PC tablet")

Solution: let people turn it on /off as they wish. Even default to off if you think your parents spend a lot of time on sites with ads.

I like how the OP hasn't answered my question about what they are missing without Flash?

What do you need it for?

I think most people just want "the whole web" or whatever they read in a magazine without any actual sites that they want to use.

Every site I frequently visit has either a mobile version or doesn't use Flash, so I just don't see a need for it.

Someone ported Androids Flash 10.1 to IOS for the iPad and iPhone and it works great. I don't even care if it uses more battery I just want the full web.

I bet SJ will be furious when everyone jailbreaks for this and his app store sales go down. :D

I dont' believe Steve Jobs ever said Flash couldn't "work" on the iPhone. It could work just fine. Apple's decision not to include Flash had to do with battery drain. How is Steve Jobs a liar, and why is this having such an emotional effect on you that you need to resort to name calling?

And like I said, after an hour when the battery is dead, they will ask why did that only last an hour, or why does it keep crashing when I am on my flash sites.

Flash is dying, it never worked right. Once everyone switches to hmtl5 there will be no more issues.

Flash does not even want to fix their known issues, so blame them not apple.

Please, anyone that is really caught up in the whole Flash debate, watch Steves D8 interview. He lays out his case for not choosing flash, all of which is very reasonable.

The way I use the web is not influenced by Flash.

I have it disabled on Safari on my Mac, as I find Safari runs better without plug-in's enabled, and I don't miss Flash content when using my iPhone while out and about.

I have NEVER gone onto a site on my iPhone and thought, "Ah ****, thing doesn't support Flash".

This topic delivers. I've never seen a TC so thoroughly owned. Very entertaining.

I wouldn't mind seeing an option to turn Flash on and off on the iPhone though, kind of like with Push, and like push notifications I would probably keep it off 99% of the time.

No I only use PC's and flash runs great on them especially 10.1 with GPU video decoding. Flash probably sucks on macs because the OS is more closed and I bet the developers are limited in what APIs they can use. I haven't had Flash crash my any of my PCs since the early 2000s.

Flash has been available for mobile devices for at least 3 years now. I used to use a nokia n810 tablet with flash on it and it had a crappy 600mhz ARM11 processor. That was 3 years ago and it ran acceptably. The new iphone has a 1ghz cpu so it should run great like in the video

Flash won't be going anywhere any time soon. Just because it sucks on macs doesn't mean anything when macs are 10% of the market. PC users are fine with flash and it is here to stay imo.
thats such a narrow minded view...flash doesn't work on MACs cause the OS sucks...... are we in school or something?

heres steves thoughts on flash http://video.allthingsd.com/video/d...ut-flash/E2C4DAF1-23F8-402E-A0DB-4F87D73A49FB

Sometimes the Mac rumors forum rules really handcuff my responses to threads like these :p

No one has any idea if it "works great" just yet. Comex has been working on it for a long time and it's still extremely buggy. So your jumping to conclusions of epic proportions. People shouldn't use prerelease YouTube videos to determine whether something "works great"

I doubt it will drain the battery any more.... Flash probably sucks on macs because....

When all of your arguments are based upon "I doubt" and "probably" you have already pissed away any chance of making a point. That's pretty weak when you're trying to call someone out as a liar.

People laughed at apple when they stopped putting floppy discs in their computers, but you never see those around anymore do you?

I love it when people bring up this point. You make it sound like the whole world would still be using 1.4mb floppies if it werent for apple. Obviously this is not the case. Apple pulled out floppy drives early to cut costs, even though most people still used floppies. Apple does abandon old tech faster than anyone else, but that doesnt mean they are the deciding factor in how the industry works. Apple fans have a skewed view of causality where everything Apple does moves the industry forward and every other company just copies apple.

Mac users used to be considered smart, but that reputation died too long ago...

I agree that Flash is a resource hog even more so on Apple. But Flash is more open ended and everyone knows that Steve Jobs doesn't like that. And imagine how much free content there would be if Flash were available on the iPhone. It's a resource hog, Steve wants control, and there is a lot of money at stake. I'm done.

My experience with the iPad is why I want Flash:

My parents couldn't figure out why they kept seeing a blue block instead of the photo slideshows they were used to on a laptop.

Good try. Apple actually removed the blue block icon before the iPad shipped. It was only present in the January keynote demo. So, your parents would be seeing blank space instead of a blue block (although since you didn't know that I doubt you or your parents actually have used an iPad).

Steve Jobs is very slick and slippery sales person. I find Apples arrogance and spin, both interesting and humorous. They've whipped the fanboys into a frenzy, convincing them of the "evils" of flash. How it's responsible for everything from MacBook Pros overheating, to computers crashing, to world hunger….

And yet the PC sector of computing, have been using flash _trouble free_ for years. Hello Apple ? Anybody Home? Apple has exerted their influence, and yet when it comes to new "other brands" of phones, the lack of flash is considered a fault, a drawback, a feature that's sorely lacking. What a double standard that is! Apple's iPad with it's lack of flash is hailed as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Just read this excerpt below, from a writer who is reviewing two smartphones.

Excerpt:

"The two new phones have more in common than just their screens. They both run Android version 2.1, which means that neither one yet supports the new version of Adobe's Flash software that's been designed for mobile phones. The new Flash requires the just-released Android 2.2 operating system. Motorola says it plans to provide Flash and the latest version of Android to Droid X users in late summer; Sprint says it will provide the update "in the near future."

Your answer is pretty obvious then! Go get an Android phone!

I bet SJ will be furious when everyone jailbreaks for this and his app store sales go down. :D

Right because we'll all stop buying apps when people see all those spammy flash ads in mobile safari.

Besides, Jailbreaking for flash is different form jailbreaking for the purpose of pirating apps. Or, are you saying that people who want Flash also pirate software?

We get it...you hate Steve...your personal vendetta has been evident in nearly every post of yours which renders them both predicable and skewed towards a "grand Apple conspiracy" to purposefully screw people just for the sake of screwing them and stealing their money...that's unfortunate because you otherwise appear to be an intelligent person...

Finally... the Truth!

I could not agree more, this is all about power, money and control ... It's all about Steve Jobs ego, and incessant greed.

Really? Lets see

Integrated E-mail long before PC's even gave it a thought
Speech recognition
The Mouse
Built in CD-roms
gigabit Ethernet
Bluetooth
Firewire
USB
SCSI
Touchpads
First company to Drop CRT's
Postscript back in 85 (Windows didn't even support this untill win 3.1 about 6 or 7 years later)
Built in Speakers

The list goes on and on.

So pretty much apple was first to the market with portables and desktops with those and if apple had never implemented those features in their portables and desktops then PC's would have most likely never gotten them or would have gotten them way later and nickel and dimed consumers for each of them.

And to think that Bluetooth is still not even a standard feature in most pc's and they make you pay extra for it except in high end models.

Apple includes bluetooth in all models.

Since you're missing the point entirely, Let me help you out here.

I care about the customers... period.

I'm not a follower or worshipper, or fanboy, blindly following a CEO that could care less about the (in his words) "little people".
