can't view buymusic.com anymore from my mac

HAHA maybe they got pissed off
at all the negative emails they
were getting from mac users...
this is what i get now when i go there
Thank you for visiting BuyMusic.com.

In order to take full advantage of BuyMusic.com's offerings you must be on a Windows Operating System using Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher.

Download Internet Explorer Here.

:p stupid

I do not know if this is way off -
How about if Apple would throw in 10 free music downloads into .mac annual renewals ?
That would get the nos on the music store up, make the .mac service a little more sexy and overall give at least me a warm and fuzzy feeling (even though I cannot download ... sniff )

If you really feel the need to view that pos you can tell omniweb to act as ie 6 ad then peruse the site. Of course to listen to anything you will need to have satan's sister installed. Fortunately not yet available for a mac.
:D

Odd. I got the site at first, then it did an auto-refresh and gave me this message. It's almost like it was teasing me... (not that there's much to tease me with...)

[Edit] Uh, that's a redirect, not a refresh...[/Edit]

This and Java

The caching can indeed result in unwanted ones... also, Java implementation is somewhat raw still. Anybody had any luck with any of the Yahoo gaming stuff ?

FYI, for anyone curious, I believe that the guitar on Apple's music site is an Epiphone Elitist Archtop Sheraton, (though the fretboard doesn't look quite right on the Apple site).

Actually the Apple guitar is quite clearly a Gibson, just look at the headstock logo. The Epiphone HStock is noticeably different.
I think it is an old Gibson ES-345 with the vari-tone switch clearly visible. Here is a picture of the current Gibbo reissue for comparison:-

APart from that, as a UK resident, I can't use either service. Come on Apple, get your finger out and give us Europeans a chance to further increase sales from iTMS!
Oh yes, and iPhoto prints/albums too. There are other people in the world who would use your sevices if they were available.

Unrelated but sad

Yeah Apple should try and internationalise a bit more their services and try to keep prices on par with US ones... Very sad no iPhoto printing service or iTMS - although even Windows US users will be having it later this year and prices tend to be around 20% higher at least in UK and around 15% in Europe..... Not very happy about that. I expect a tune in Europe to cost 99euro cents (at the moment 15% more expensive than US) when and if it ever makes it here. Pretty sad for a company that should try and keep the small customer base it has.... And of course for heavens, a 12 million people city full of rich people and prestigious unis that do use Macs and NOT EVEN PLANS FOR AN APPLE STORE in London??????

Yep, just look at the price differential. G5 dualie, in US, $2999, in the UK, GBP 2300, which is $ 3715 at current rates.

Sadly the Mac is even lower in terms of usage here than in the US.

Apparently, there IS one difference between iTMS and Buycom, if I get a US citizen to register me as a user in the US, I CAN use iTMS, whereas Buycom just checks my IP address, and says "NO, your not in the good ol' US of A, so bugger off, Limey!"
(I am paraphrasing somewhat here!)

Apple in europe

What worries me even more is that they dont even take into account the fact that the rich european countries average incomes lag about 20% those of USA this plus the higher price makes an Apple look super expensive too most europeans, this is why I believe that although their US market share has increased a little they are loosing share in the rest of the world. An iMac in UK costs double than a comparably configured PC here. I hope that at least they can offer the same services..... like iTMS (I know I can get an account from a friend and I do have people i know in USA but I have to use a Credit Card with a billing address in US not so convenient).

Doesn't that include the VAT tax? You have to remember US prices are before any taxes.

Yes, that does indeed include VAT, at 17.5% in the UK. It still makes the Mac look very expensive compared to a PC. We Mac users appreciate to a certain extent that we pay a premium price for (hopefully) a premium product. But Joe Schmoe in the street doesn't know that, and so buys PCs.
As I said, Mac's seem to be declining in numbers over here, most of the retailers seem to have been consolidated into just a handful of places, now. Not the brightest of futures, I'm afraid.

But as Apple don't seem to be exactly champing at the bit to give us comparable services to the U.S., makes you wonder if they even care.

Just wait until this tanks miserably, and the CEO gets his arse canned.

Right now he's delusional, making REALLY bad decisions. When the music service goes down, it's going to take the .com with it.

Just remember, you heard it here first. ;)

RE: boycottbuymusic.com

If you want an ad-free free web-space provider, try brinkster:

www.brinkster.com

I think it would look more professional without that geocities ad. They offer a lot for the free service, including limited ASP and SSI stuff. No PHP though.

I clicked about 30 songs similar to what i purchased on itms - they were all 99 cents - where are the 79 cent songs? I am suspect when it says "from 79 cents..." from 79 cents to whatever 1.09 1.25 2.05.
The whole thing is lame - no worries (for itms)!
The layout is similar to itms but the end to end experience cannot come close to itms.

Taken from MacMerc.com...

BuyMusic.com (the site that ripped off the apple store), just started to block all Mac users. I don't know about you, but I can't stand when I can't see something (not that I want to, it's just the concept). Here's what you do if you want to be able to view the site in Safari.

Open the terminal and copy/paste:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

If Safari is open, quit it and restart. Otherwise just open it up. Now look at the menu bar at the top right. It should read "debug", and you're right if you think it's new. Click it and go down to "User Agent" and then hit Windows MSIE 6. That's it. Go check out those crazy cats at BuyMusic!

For the record, and for the sake of my fellow code junkies out there, here's the JavaScript they're using to do it. NOTE: I had to get this using MSIE 6.0 on my daughter's Win XP box; I could never open the page using MSIE 6 on Win 98 at work. :D

<script language="javascript">
<!--
function Toggle(show,image) {
if(show) {
eval("document." + image + ".src=" + imageon);
} else {
eval("document." + image + ".src=" + imageoff);
}
}
//-->
</script>
<script language="JavaScript">
<!--
var begin = new Date();
var startYear = new Date("January 1, 1970");
startYear.setYear(begin.getYear());
var adRandomOrd = (begin.getTime() - startYear.getTime());
//-->
</script>
<script language="Javascript">
<!--
var mac = navigator.appVersion.indexOf("Mac")>-1
var opera = navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Opera")>-1
//IE5+ required, netscape, macs, and opera are not supported
if (navigator.appName == "Netscape" || mac || opera) {
musicLink = false
window.location.href="/ierequired.htm";
} else {
//find out if its ie, then version 5+
var tmpIEVerInfo = navigator.userAgent.indexOf("MSIE ") + 5;
if(tmpIEVerInfo != -1)
{
if(parseInt(navigator.userAgent.substring(tmpIEVerInfo, tmpIEVerInfo+1)) < 5)
window.location.href="/ierequired.htm";
}
else
{
window.location.href="/ierequired.htm";
}
musicLink = true
}
//-->
</script>

Anyone else thinks this is a non-idea?

I would not take that MPFREE thing so seriously. The purpose of DRM is to ensure that the buyer of the actual music does not let it trade freely. That means that after I buy the CD or the file from the internet I cannot share it. The strategy does not even consider that. OK you might not be willing to trade the promotion file but you can always trade the music you buy because this does not have DRM. It is an interesting promotional idea but has a small flaw. The advertising part can be removed - easily and people might be happy to keep that song especially if it is something that they wont listen for more than a few weeks. I think DRM has a point I just also think that as soon as it does not let me enjoy my music becomes counter productive. It forces me to go back and either spend 20$ for one song (ie buy the CD) or fire up Poisoned and download it.

300,000... I don't think so

Yeah, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I found something fishy on buymusic.com. I went into every catagory and did a "list all" and added up all the songs and I got only 115,65 songs total. A far cry from their 300,000 claim. I can think of only two explinations for this.

a: The site search engine or song database is so crappy that there are actually 200,000 songs that just aren't listed under any catagory.

or

b: They are full of sh*t.

You're guess is as good as mine.

top ten? same for a week

We all know how bad this service is but what amaze me is their most downloaded songs and albums are still the same since day one, so may not be the most popular but the songs they decided to show.

If you remember the iTMS since day one the most downloaded songs and albums changes daily, apple says that only counts songs for last 24 hrs. if I remember right, so they also provide an accurate list so people looking for new songs can take this list as a guide to find new artists.

And I havent read any article about how many songs BuyMusic.com has sell in its first week, lets wait for few more days and hope they sell the truth "We have sell only 10 songs in our fisrt week, we didn´t have all the 3000 songs ready, the users didnt respond to our bad service and we will have to close the first online music store, well actually wasnt the first one and I am sorry for copying apple"

iTunes store.

I'm glad somebody started a thread on this. So Steve is wrong because he created the iTunes store on the Mac? What other alternative did he have?
