BS. They can afford to put a camera in a $150 nano, but not even the $400 iPod Touch?

Wow. Are you serious? Let's See what the $400 touch has that the $150 nano doesn't. Bigger screen, wifi, Nike+ receiver, 8x the memory, multi touch, OSX, Bluetooth . . .

There is more to making an iPod than just a camera.

I hate to say it, but it looks like I may seriously consider the Zune HD over the iPod Touch. I've never owned a touch-screen version of the iPod, and I was hoping that it would have had some form of GPS capability (whether it be aftermarket or whatnot).

I don't really care about the video camera omission, but do you guys really think Jobs would come out and say "Yeah we were going to have the video camera in the iPod touch, but we had technical difficulties and couldn't get it settled in time." No, instead he made up some excuse about how they see it more as a gaming device instead.

Wait the $150 Nano doesn't do Nike+? I thought all the Nanos did (which incidentally would mean they too have bluetooth).

We can't deny the new Nano will sell. Apple is targeting a certain market and they know that market pretty well at this point.

The Touch a gaming machine? To who? Again, a certain market. Unfortunately I'm also a Touch user and am not interested in portable gaming. So there's always casualties. You win some, you lose some. And they're not going to get me to buy an iPhone until.. well until I break down and buy the arfing thing.

PowerBook G5 next Tuesday!

The new nanos have Nike+ PEDOMETERS, which counts your steps, it doesn't measure your distance (how long or how fast you're stepping). Sprinting or walking it will say you've done XXXX steps.

To get Nike+ pace/distance information to work with nanos, you still need the Nike+ receiver (and the shoe insert). My point was with a ipod touch you don't need the receiver.

Pretty sure nanos don't have bluetooth.

Cost is an excuse

Actually, the cost of the camera is an excuse that Apple is using in not including the camera at this time. Unfortunately since the decision has been made, the inclusion of a camera will be done mostl likely until the next update of the iPods next year.

It seems that Apple wanted tro maintain a sizable difference between the Phone and Touch, enough to dirve some consumers to buy the iPhone instead of the Touch. In mycase, I'm waiting for next year's iPhone (hopefully in verizon). In the meantime I may want to buy the 32 GB Touch to hold me over for a year,.

In the case of the Nano, they didn't add any additional capacity to them, so the camera and the FM tuner were added as the value add for this year's update. I still find the addition of the FM tuner odd considering that Apple has always poo pooed the FM tuner. My guess is that they are seeing a real slowdown in the growth of the Nanos and they somethign dramatic to keep this segment of the market.

MY predictions for 2010 are the following:

4 GB Shuffle at $ 59
8GB Nano at $99
8GB iPod Touch $ 149
16gb Touch $ 199 (w/camera 3MP)
32 GB Touch $299 (w/camera 3 MP, & GPS)
64 GB Touch $ 399 (w/camera 5 MP, GPS, Compass. Mic)

adding a vga video camera with a cheap small chip to the nano may be fine.

but adding that to a $400 touch would be a PR desaster.

you have to add a good camera chip with a good lens and a little flash or the touch gets percieved as a ****** camera.

so it's either no camera or a good camera for $25 or so more. this would ruin apples bottom line or they are not able to be cheaper than the zune. it's just again apples strategy of doing things not at all or doing them at a premium for a high price. the nano is already a "budget" product so here the cheap camera is not a PR desaster.

in a phone a cheap camera is fine as well because all phones have bad cameras and it's just an extra to have a camera.

so the decision to not put a cheap camera in the ipod touch makes toatl sense to me seeing it from a PR point of view.

i hope the TABLET comes soon with a good set of features. i'd rather pay a higher price there.

Best moves by Apple I think...

Shuffle - the work out, wear-on quick iPod
Nano - Music & video with friends & family
Classic - Hold your entire library
Touch - The ultimate interactive gaming music device
iPhone - Connection between this & that, communications / MOBILE.
Tablet - Everyday computer on the go
Air - Lightweight wireless notebook
MB Pro - Professional Notebook
iMac - Desktop
Mac Pro - Pro & Beyond

... Setting up every consumer with their choice of computing device. This is the future.
I like the way you put it.

However, not sure about the Tablet and lack of MB. I do like the MBP lineup (13, 15 & 17).

There's a difference between the video parts and those needed for still pictures - Jobs says it in the interview, the reason they didn't add an actual photo camera in the nano is because the parts needed are a lot thicker. The same would apply to the touch; theoretically, that would also mean it'd cost more to include the sensors for a still camera.
Based on what I've seen in Akihabara, that makes sense.

Video resolution (640x480) takes few pixels (around 0.3 megapixels) compared to a decent still camera. Size of the CCD is much smaller. Due to the quality, the lens can be smaller as well.

8GB Nano at $99

64 GB Touch $ 399 (w/camera 5 MP, GPS, Compass. Mic)

No way they'd have FOUR DIFFERENT features sets on ipod touches. I think Steve dies a little on the inside when they have two different features sets, like they do now.

Here's my guess for the touches in 2010:

32GB Touch w/camera $199
64GB Touch w/camera $299
128GB Touch w/camera $399

Remember flash will keep getting cheaper. I think cameras and GPS will be "assumed" to be on the touches in 2010, but everyone will be throwing their arms up and shaking their heads when GPS stays on iphone only.

An i-Phone camera, is all it's ever gonna get,:confused:and all we'd ever expect. A 6 MP ain't happenin, and with the photo software available in the store, it be awesome

Play more, read less?

Mmmmh. I wonder about the impact of keep pushing all these personal gaming devices on top of promoting e-literacy.

If Apple brought out a time travelling space ship for $100 people like you would still find something to whine about.

Is that $100 with a camera or without. If the later then Job's has lost the plot.....A time travelling space ship without a camera (or an FM tuner for that matter) is a joke.....

Nothing of substance from Apple today.

iPod Touch as a gaming device? Not for me - I use it primarily as a remote control for my mac mini music server. I also use the wifi to check headlines. All I want are some improvements to the remote app and maybe a bigger screen. (That would be a tablet, wouldn't it?)

As for iTunes, how about an improvement in the sound quality of the music such as an option for lossless 16 bit/44.1 (don't even get me started on 24 bit/96k)? MP3s don't cut it anymore. I have about 1,000 cds (12,000 songs) on iTunes and how many have I purchased from Apple? Exactly none! Why? Because I don't want dumbed down MP3s. I also don't want some moronic "genius" telling me what to play (or more to the point, what to buy). Yes, more album art is good but not without good sounding music. This is about MUSIC isn't it? Hmmm...

This mish-mash of features is sick.

You get a video camera with the nano.... sorry, but I'd buy the nano first. The apps aren't that great. Sure, they help if you have no brain, or are just a gamer. I guess the iPT really hit a gaming market which I don't linger in. As an internet browser, the iPT/iPhone is clunky. They should have camera'd up the higher iPTs.

Next year... everyone knows it is coming. These iPods don't really enthuse anyone to upgrade. Might be great for first timers, though, but everyone knows the next models will be decked with cameras and greater stuff we know is coming.

A tablet would have been incredible, but obviously it wasn't ready yet (if ever). A larger, better browser with expanded work platform would be best.

mmmm Ice Cream.

All he needs to do to gain weight is get a box of Crispy Cremes and Whole Milks, and eat one/drink one every half hour, all day, along with normal meals. Ho'crap, he'd expand quick. One year and we'll see the bigger, slower Jobs.

Oh come on!!

First the stupid comments about the iliver are wrong. Second why is the google ad advertising liver transplants? Wrong, just so wrong.

I was hoping for a camera on the touch, but hadn't planned on buying one.

anyone know who this mystery donor is or which 3rd world country he had his "accident" in? Maybe Steve was tracking him by hacking into the traffic control grid of Mac Minis and timed the accident?

That might be one of the most disgusting and sick comments made here in awhile. Perhaps an attempt to be humorous, but still sick.

the best way to gain healthy weight is to eat 3 PBJ sandwiches and chocolate milk before you go to bed. your body cannot break it down and it goes to your muscles

Oh yeah, it certainly doesn't turn into fat in any way ;) It's well known that you don't need to exercise or anything to gain muscle weight - just eat sandwiches and drink chocolate milk - and even better, do it just before you go to bed :D

As many of you know Steve is Vegetarian and he only eat fish (very little)... how can he gain weight???
Either by changing his metabolism – which I presume is already part of his medication – and/or by giving him a diet, with lots and lots of calories (Google "Ectomorph").
