Sounds like something the guy on the left would be into... ;)

Will the last creative professional to leave the Apple fold please remember to turn off the lights...
I work at a company that produces products for the business data center, and they are primarily based on Linux these days. Several developers in the company have MBP's for software development and use in the lab and at user sites; I have a 24" iMac myself. They are probably overkill for what most use them for here though. It still surprises me that many of these Linux developers, while they may have a Linux box or Mac in their office, do the bulk of their development work on Windows machines.

Sounds like something the guy on the left would be into... (if Apple's marketing claims are to be believed, that is) ;)

Exactly - Although apparently the guy on the left in real life is actually a mac user and the guy on the right a PC user

Not only Apple's marketing claims - Microsoft's too.

Actually today there's more options for creative people in the Windows world than in the Apple world, in both software and hardware. Most Windows laptops do include Firewire and at least half of the latest and greatest i7 Intel motherboards include a Firewire port. And Logic and/or Final Cut isn't the only game in town.

If Apple doesn't need the business, the Wintel world will reap the benefits.

Yes because the Wintel world is clearly gaining share over Apple right now isn't it? ...or is that just a future prediction ? :p

Do you really think that Apple with ever have the OS market dominated? That's like saying sometime soon in the future everyone will drive ferraris.

No I never would predict such a thing, If I had to make a prediction I would say it will top out at less than 20%. Although the OS will became less of an issue in the future regardless. Cloud computing, Linux on the desk top etc. Windows will retain a majority although less dominant share.

In the future we'll all be driving Farraris that can fly! :D

And apparently anyone who wants to create music or video will be working with Windows or Linux rather than OS X simply because the hardware options necessary for doing so were dropped from the Apple line.

Well let's be fair. Apple has been neglecting its pro software for quite a while.

I have a hypothesis about why Apple is doing what it's been doing recently. Maybe Apple thinks the economy is gonna crash hard in the very near future. So by selling much cheaper to manufacture computers with the same product names that have earned a great reputation in the past, Apple will still be able to sell a lot of these junkier laptops and rake in as much cash as they can while there's still money out there in the economy to get. Apple will take all that cash and put it into many diverse depression-resistant investments like gold. That way the company can hope to survive a major economic down turn.

Just a hypothesis.

Are you kidding me???

The MacBook is not a bad computer, its a great one. Yes, it lacks FW, but based only on that, you think Apple is going to basicly give up in the computer market?

Also you the market for computer is just gonna go away? Sure times might get tough, but there will be a market for computers

...

It isn't a great computer for anyone that requires Firewire. But that's the point that a few people in this thread don't seem to be able to understand.

Add a $10 port to the Macbook and it would be a "great" computer for those who need Firewire, but then that simple expenditure would keep Apple's accountants up at night, having nightmares about dollars bills growing wings and flying away...

I fully agree, the lack of FireWire has made me reconsider the MacBook. I like the build design, the unibody, but I use FW for my external HDs, and while USB is possible, its just so much slower!!

but to say Apple is giving up on the computer market because of no FW is crazy talk!

Judging from the comments of some, if Apple dropped their entire audio and video production software line that would be something that would really help Apple "grow" and gain market share.

According to you all that has already happened.:D

Without a doubt the entire market for iPhones, iTunes, home video, web work and relatively safe computing (from malware) is a market that dwarfs video and audio production. In business only the balance sheet matters. Still one would like to see them service that niche too.

Its dramatic license.

Where do you think the content for iTunes comes from? Is it made by the Elves in the Enchanted Forest by magic?

YouTube, Hulu, Fancast... does it all appear by magic as well? Or do humans create it, using computers and appropriate software?

Hey if it is produced on those awesome Windows Vista, 7, 8, 9 PC's it will still be viewable under OS X. Not saying it is isn't a worthy profession.

 Really? I thought one of the big reasons in the apologia for dropping FW on the MB was that it just wasn't catching on in the Windows world. I don't have a lot of experience with Windows laptops, but of the ones I've seen there hasn't been one that had a FW port.

Many Windows laptops have a tiny "1394" 4-pin port.

You thought wrong... but apparently Steve Jobs missed the memo as well.

Go to Newegg and browse through the the laptops currently available for sale. About two-thirds of the C2D models come equipped with Firewire. And according to the 1394 Trade Association "the number of 1394-equipped notebook PCs has increased by approximately 20 percent in 2008" and "among the PCs recommended to users by Consumer Reports in its December 2008 edition, 75 percent featured FireWire, including brands from Sony, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, and Hewlett Packard. "

There's more Firewire goodies available in the Windows worlds today than there ever have been.

Still can't see the forest because those pesky trees are in the way, 'ay?

FireWire Rocks and is so much quick then USB. That's a bummer that they have no more Firewire support. I know you can get a converter plug for firewire somewhere. I got mine on ebay since I saw a big dip in products that have firewire. I knew something was up.

Uh, we've been through this a zillion times. There is no "converter" from USB-to-Firewire, if that's what you mean. FW800-to-FW400, yes, but nothing that will give you support for Firewire devices on the new Macbooks.
