And remember that of these 13,000 that signed the petition, quite a few of them might have "sold" Apple to friends of theirs, but now will not do so. Also, some of these 13,000 may have authority at school districts or other places and will now recommend that their schools go with Dell or other Windows systems instead of Macs. So it is quite likely that this 13,000 could mushroom very quickly into more sales (or missed sales in this case).

Hmm... Maybe, but probably not :p

Well, I can tell you that I make the recommendation for my school district and there's a really good chance that I will recommend Dells for the lab upgrades. It's what my district uses for the standard computer for business classes, teacher's computers, etc. So converting the labs will just be the final step. I had a struggle getting them to purchase Macs in the first place because their argument was that district IT doesn't support apple (I don't want, or need, their support for any of my computers). I'll probably wait to see what happens with the iMacs. But if firewire is gone from them, Apple has lost me and my recommendation.

I don't think apple has any desire to kill FireWire overnight. They kept it on the higher end line of MacBooks and I'm sure it will stay on the Macs...for now. They just removed it from the portable b/c based on the space they had to work with FW just wasn't that important to keep on a small portable notebook. I mean I could make the same argument that the iPhone doesn't have FW right?

i hope they keep white macbook for long time - as mentioned by steve himself ... we are going to sell as long as we can ...

that will give some options on firewire ... even though alu macbook looks killer.

What does the iPhone have to do with computers and the market for them? If Jobs was stating what he honestly believes (instead of spinning), that there's no need for firewire on consumer products, then the revised iMacs will exclude it also, because they are not considered "pro" by apple. I can categorically state that school districts on the whole will not be purchasing Mac Pros for video editing labs. They will make the switch to PC's.

No, because the iPhone never had FW. There's a big difference between previously having supported a technology and never having supported it.

"Consumer" and "pro" are arbitrary categories that Apple wants customers to buy into. Then they redefine the categories to push more people into the "pro" line, where systems have higher profit margins for them.

Much smaller (and cheaper) notebooks have either firewire or expresscard slots that will alow adding firewire or sometimes both, so the space argument is moot. For example, HP has a $330 mini laptop with an expresscard slot and an 8.9" screen - much smaller than the Macbook. Removing firewire on the Macbook is just another example of form over function.

as a musician... I have a mac pro, and a macbook pro.

I would never ever ever consider running reason, logic, drums from hell, etc. on a macbook. You are creating a situation that does not exist.

So, you need a mac pro or a macbook pro to run logic? Lol, and the earlier days when I was running logic on a Pentium 2? You don't need that power to run logic. I'm running Logic and Ableton rewired on a macbook 2.0 ghz with 2 GB ram:D

Don't underestimate the power of the macbook:apple:

So buy that netbook since firewire is the number one requirement for you when purchasing a laptop.

You know that wasn't his point. The point is that, even in a very small form factor, there is room for extra ports. And I've not read anywhere in this thread that firewire is the number one requirement when purchasing a laptop. It's one of many. But it is critical because the others can all be there and the lack of firewire makes it unusable for our purposes.

I'm finding it really hard to work out why people are attacking those who are annoyed about losing firewire. If they are happy without it, fine, but why the need to trash those who are going to be adversely affected by the consequences? It's not constructive, it's largely uninformed and it's definitely not pretty.

I wish everybody could have that attitude. Right on!

Agreed. It's pretty annoying that this has happened. It's costly and a pain to have to go get new peripherals, and there was absolutely no real reason to get rid of it in the first place.

~1,740,666 macbooks sold in just the last quarter alone.

1,740,666
________ = 0.7%
13,000

Think you would need like 20% to get apple even thinking about changing their plans. So only 335,133 to go!

Count in the time too. A quater is about 13 weeks. Make that
0.7*13. And it's now more.
13890/1740666*13 = 10.4%. If I was a stockholder I would have been worried.

The math assumes that 13,000 people will sign the petition every week for 13 weeks. I doubt that will happen.

That said, the petition won't cover everyone who is unable to buy the MacBook for lack of FireWire. One could argue that a good number of the 13,000 people so far are enthusiasts who heard of the petition through places such as this. These people are more likely to be evangelizing Apple and its products (i.e. referring sales and such), and so to lose their recommendations causes a multiplier effect.

Because people (like myself) get annoyed when other people constant whine about stuff. Like MMS and Copy/Paste, but at least those 2 have some real purpose although not worth crying about!

You can't do anything about it so just go buy and HP or use your damn video camera on your iMac and not on your notebook? If I used FW I wouldn't be working on video stuff anyway on a notebook I would be doing it on my main computer.
