All speculation. Not all philanthropists make their names known, in fact it used to be the standard etiquette towards giving. Realize of us have any evidence either way.

Maybe he is a tight-fisted bastard, maybe he gives anonymously? Who knows.

This certainly isn´t the first time the annonymous donations theory has been thrown around in regards to Mr. Jobs. While this is certainly possible on a smaller scale, I´m not sure how the total could match Mr. Gates´s contributions. I mean, I´m an avid newspaper reader, but I don´t recall a story about billions of dollars being annonymously donated to UNICEF or something. Knowing today´s media, there certainly would be such a story if it ever happened.

So what are your ulterior motives to donating to charaties???
Ulterior motives is used to describe your own selfish motives.

ulterior |ˌəlˈti(ə)rēər|
adjective
existing beyond what is obvious or admitted.
- beyond what is immediate or present; coming in the future.
ORIGIN mid 17th cent.: from Latin, literally ‘further, more distant.’

Just because authors use a word in a particular way doesnt mean it is its true meaning.

Or not.

Some of these comments, like above, are simply nonsensical

I don't agree with his point. I think that what Bill Gates is doing with his charity is fantastic.

But his analogy was not nonsensical in that some of that money was obtained as a result of illegal business practices.

Can you cite examples where Mr. Gates´s actions have actively and directly hurt those that go against his cause? I certainly can in Mr. Bush´s case...

Because of Mr Gates' creation of the 'cheap computer for all' revolution, we now have slave labour for electronics production.

And now theres charities to help free the slaves!

Yeah, and Steve Jobs is a saint...

These "illegal" business practices would be applauded if was Apple performing them. Example: Apple not allowing Opera browser on iPhone = right, because why shouldn't Apple be able to decide what runs on THEIR os? - Microsoft bundling Internet Explorer with Windows is wrong, because it's killing the competition. Another example: Nokia suing Apple is wrong, because it's a desperate attempt to set back the competition. - Apple suing HTC is right, because they have the right to protect their patents.

Or most of it.

I would be far more impressed with Bill's charity work if the money that fueled it had come more from creativity and innovation than subterfuge and proven illegal market manipulation.

I don't think Bill cares whether or not you are impressed with his charity work.

As long as it's not drug smuggling, murder for higher, etc I don't care where it came from, its just great that he is using it to help the world become a better place for all.

Good, because I don't care whether he cares that I'm impressed or not.

(Nor is he reading MacRumors. Nor is Steve Jobs, nor does Steve Jobs care that anyone here thinks he's a saint or devil. Though that doesn't stop anyone here from vilifying Jobs.)

As long as it's not drug smuggling, murder for higher, etc I don't care where it came from

Or murder for hire even. ;)

Though would any of the dead companies he's left in his wake with his Illegal Steamroller count as "murder?" Hmm...

Yeah, and Steve Jobs is a saint...

I never said anything about Steve Jobs.

Strawman.

Example: Apple not allowing Opera browser on iPhone = right, because why shouldn't Apple be able to decide what runs on THEIR os? - Microsoft bundling Internet Explorer with Windows is wrong, because it's killing the competition.

Microsoft was wrong because they abused their monopoly position. Apple is not in a monopoly position with the iPhone.

Another example: Nokia suing Apple is wrong, because it's a desperate attempt to set back the competition. - Apple suing HTC is right, because they have the right to protect their patents.

You need a better dictionary:

ul·te·ri·or
(l-tîr-r)
adj.
1. Lying beyond what is evident, revealed, or avowed, especially being concealed intentionally so as to deceive: an ulterior motive.
2. Lying beyond or outside the area of immediate interest.
3. Occurring later; subsequent.

What the heck dictionary do you have? The definitions are roughly the same. But what's up with the pronunciation?

You know JFK's dad was was a booze runner and he would never be pres without his underhanded dealings.

Wow. You people are dumping all over someone who is giving money to charities and trying to make a difference. Pathetic. And as to his "ulterior motives," I'm guessing not one of you is even remotely qualified to make a statement like that. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say none of you mudslingers has ever even *had* a conversation with Bill Gates, let alone know him well enough to know his "ulterior motives." Again, pathetic.

*digs up and looks at the packaging for my Apple products*
"Designed by Apple in California. Made in China."

So anything made in China is now slave labour? I gather you don't own much in the form of electronics or appliances then, if you are so appalled by the Chinese manufacturing industry.

Ironic isn't it? Many here will say there is more to Mr. Jobs than meets the public eye (annonymous donations), and yet they will base their opinions of Mr. Gates entirely through such a lens.

You need to re-read my sentence because your comprehension skills are terrible. Yes Apple uses Chinese 'practically slave' labour but thats not relevant to the original point.

I guess youve never done anything remotely close to running a business.
