Point taken, but
Isn't SJ a veggie/fruitarian type?
If so he could have been eating his way into misery.
He would need to eat lot's of protein and very few carbs
with high glycemic index numbers. (Atkins / Ketonic diet)
And meat and eggs is one of the best sources of this type of nutrition. Anathema to a veggie. Normal insulin levels would not do well against an onslaught of fruit juice, etc. He may have had to adjust them. As well as a possible issue with T cell counts that could exacerbate the issue.
Vegan, not good for what he got done. I'm sure he has nutritionalists helping him out now.

Then why did you say this:

IMO, using words such as "You are like a father to me" shows a disconnect to reality beyond hero worship. Which is not even appropriate. Its one thing to be inspired by a successful business man - as an IT person, I am inspired by any geek that successful and mainstream - its another to personalize him to the point that he is like a family member.

I feel bad that he is sick like I do about any public figure that announces such a thing.

Well you guys are right, maybe I should have worded my original statement better. I don't consider him as my father, I just got overzealous.

Doesn't seem likely to be what he meant.

He's not the first person with pancreatic cancer. Any resulting insulin lack (depending on how much of the pancreas they removed) would have already been compensated for... and certainly wouldn't be a year long mystery that required "sophisticated blood tests."

Thank you. As history tells us, the people that ask questions set themselves apart from those that follow.

I don't believe everything I read, ESPECIALLY some "note" the day before the first important day of the year (documented) for a billion dollar company.

Because you are the untrusting paranoid type?

What do you have other than flimsy circumstances that this isn't the truth? Can you really not take a man at his word?

Rubbish. If they lied about it, they could get sued or fined for stock manipulation and as a previous poster pointed out, stock tends to rise before then go down after the keynote, whatever happens (just like people's opinions on this forum!)

THIS ARTICLE proves your point, and I can't find one the has a chart on the week after that shows the stocks rising for that week, then declining. I know because I normally buy about a month leading up, and sell 2 -3 days after at the first dip.

Further to previous posts from Bloomberg today:

"The pancreas contains islet cells, which make the hormones insulin and glucagon, helping keep blood sugar levels within a normal range, said Raji Annaswamy, an endocrinologist at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Neuroendocrine islet cell tumors can cause overproduction of either one, or other powerful hormones such as somatostatin or gastrin, which are involved in digestion".

Sometimes the obvious is the answer.

People have been questioning Steve Jobs' Health for what, since that skinny keynote right? All of a sudden I am supposed to believe that doctors getting paid millions of dollars "suddenly" put a finger on exactly what the problem was? The DAY before keynote?

:(

Don't get me wrong, I hope Steve Jobs gets well, but he can't live forever. If they keep hanging on to the fact that Apple will fall when Steve departs (they being Apple and the public), then they will (apple).

Right! For the cancer he no longer has...

You are only "cancer free" until a Dr. (re)discovers that you are not...

Oh ok, I didnt realize that 100% of cancer patients have a reoccurance. Especially seeing as his form of cancer was treated by removing it.
I dont get why people like you INSIST that he is still suffering from cancer, based on literally no evidence.

I don't see it as dishonest. As people age they get various types of medical conditions, very few of which are terminal, or that can't be controlled by the right combination of medication, diet, etc.

Yes, but the obvious and critical difference here is that, even with the surgery, his illness is 50% terminal within five years. (It's only "curable" if you end up in the good half.) And something clearly was not under control the past year.

Remember the 3G launch? His press team said then that he was simply suffering from a "common bug". Now his letter says it was actually a whole year of not knowing what was happening, and the doctors still don't know for sure yet, but think they might.

Unless someone's health status really does affect his or her job performance it should simply be a personal matter.

As a cancer survivor, I agree. (As long as it's not terminal, and you're not in a critical company position, in which case I think it's your responsibility to tell your boss or successor. I did at the beginning, when I was given just a few months to live without radical treatment.)

Point taken, but Isn't SJ a veggie/fruitarian type?

Good point, and I have little knowledge of how that might affect things. So I bow to your thoughts.

There really has been a lot of facts published about SJ's pancreatic cancer, the surgery itself, the re-ducting surgery at a later date and the issues that accompany his condition with a rare but curable form (most pancreatic cancers kill within months).
If someone chooses to be misinformed then they might jump to all the aluminum hat conspiracy theories.

As a medical student, I'll weigh in.

Steve's cancer of the pancreas, especially the type he had, can cause all manner of hormonal imbalances. So what did it take so long to figure out? Well, it is important to figure out what the exact etiology (cause) of the hormone imbalance, its health effects, and any possible resolutions before he would be confident sharing this information with shareholders, the public, etc. It takes quite awhile to puzzle out the exact cause of some hormonal syndromes or disorders, especially since ruling out new or recurrent cancer is important. Granted, he probably has access to the best doctors on Earth, but it is nonetheless important to attain a measure of confidence in one's diagnosis prior to being open and forthcoming about it.

As a vegan, I am sure he will now need much more dietary support to overcome a nutritional deficiency in protein, although if it is a malabsorption syndrome or something as a consequence of the Whipple procedure, eating isn't the solution. I don't know the details, but I certainly hope it turns out well.

Bigshot CEO or not, you always want what is best for the person afflicted, as their suffering is important whether they have a private jet or a refrigerator box to live in. It is somewhat amazing to see the level of reaction here on Macrumors. Similarly, it is interesting that he actually broke down and wrote something frank on the matter for public scrutiny. Very interesting. The "politics" of this are much more amusing than speculating about why he isn't giving the keynote.

My best wishes to Steve Jobs and his family. Whether you're an Apple fan or not, he is a unique business man and he already has put Apple in the best path. IMO he deserves now the privacy and rest he's kindly asking for.

Cheers, Steve!!

You wanna know something? You are right. Once you made the aluminum hat line I had to go back and think about it. His surgery has been well documented. The company has been very open with everything. I must be freaking crazy to think that something was up with a last minute "Oh, I am Well", the day before the keynote. Silly me.

I guess I watched too much x-files. OR my mother didn't raise no dumm-aeee

Logical gaffes and why Steve Jobs is a highly evolved koala bear

Not at all. I'm a little older than Jobs, and I can recognize obvious misdirection when I see it... just as many others can.

But apparently you haven't been around long enough to recognize the ability for the human mind to interpret any set of words in any given way the reader chooses--and usually that interpretation hinges on the reader's hopes or preconceptions.

Jobs ALWAYS chooses his words very carefully, so that they appear to mean more than they do. Where did he explicitly state he wasn't dying? He didn't.

You've just illustrated my point. Your logic goes like this: "Jobs doesn't say he's not dying, therefore, he must be dying." That kind of rationalization is pointless. What would you be saying if Jobs had said he's not dying. Let me guess...

"Ah... but Jobs just means he's not in the actual act of dying as he writes this. Tricky bastard!"

You can't make assumptions on the basis of what you perceive as intentionally omitted information. For example, I'm a big fan of koala bears and it's my firm belief that Steve Jobs is, in fact, a highly evolved form of koala bear. Don't believe it? Well, show me where in his entire life he denies being a highly evolved form of koala bear. You can't, can you? Logically, you must now accept the fact that Steve Jobs is a highly evolved form of koala bear.

Right?

He used the same kind of song and dance when he says stuff like "and boy have we patented it", which the masses swooned over without thinking about it.

There are patents associated with the technology in the iPhone. I think you've mistaken a moment of levity for some kind of hidden message or attempt at mass mind control. Apple has had two prior hits--the Mac and the iPod--and both have been copied from endlessly. I think that was Steve's way of saying they've learned their lessons and have patented their ideas this time around.

He's very good at sleight of word, and I hope he gets a chance to continue doing it. But I admire him much more for spending Christmas with his family instead of preparing for a show.

I agree but I don't buy your viewpoint.

And let me ask you this. Steve states flatly in his message that he is recovering from his current condition. If it's a terminal condition, how could he state that he is recovering from it? How does that sit with your theory that he's actually dying and dancing around the fact?

The DAY before keynote?
Where does it say that it was discovered today? All we know was that it was announced today - a very important distinction. The announcement was made today simply due to it being right before MacWorld thanks to Gizmodo telling a blatant lie by claiming that Jobs was on his deathbed when it is obvious that he is not.

More than likely the diagnosis was made several weeks ago before the earlier announcement that Jobs was not going to keynote. Apple merely wanted to deal with this issue before Macworld so that the rumors will not dominate the discussion at the Keynote. Now this would not be necessary if Jobs were making the Keynote, but he is not.

I am asking why. You are assuming that this is why. I don't have any facts. I merely am using cognitive exercises, and noy taking a billion dollar companies word for it. People have been saying that Steve Jobs is going to die FOR MONTHS. You know this, I know this. Ignoring this, your post makes a bit of sense. NOT ignoring this, and your post makes no sense.
