Who else!?!

Steve Jobs said:
So now I've said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this.

Steve

Who else can end a pretty much open letter to the WORLD with just Steve? Gotta love it!

I am asking why.
You speculated off a false assumption, that the discovery was made today. There is no evidence of that and tons of evidence that the opposite was true. When you start from a false premise your arguments become more and more shankey

You are assuming that this is why.
I am speculating based on a logical progression based on what we know and the most recent assumptions made by bigger names like Gizmodo.

I don't have any facts. I merely am using cognitive exercises, and noy taking a billion dollar companies word for it. People have been saying that Steve Jobs is going to die FOR MONTHS. You know this, I know this. Ignoring this, your post makes a bit of sense. NOT ignoring this, and your post makes no sense.

People have been murmuring things on message boards for years - Apple considers them to be nothing more than irrelevant back chatter. Our idle speculation regardless of the approach of an announcement planned weeks ago. The problem is that they are getting to the point from people like Gizmodo who are promoting Job's immanent death. There really never was any comment made because it was not needed - any planned keynote that Apple was participating in as already going to be done by Jobs. These rumors are nothing more. The worse was the heart attack story that was quickly (within hours) debunked.

With MacWorld not being hosted by Jobs, there were questions - Jobs' open letter makes clear references to the likes of Gizmodo that he has to stop since he plans on being with his family. Now we know from the past that Apple's stock goes down during Macworld due to the unmet expectations that happen. Apple is going to do what it can to end any lingering rumors before a big trade show. Jobs not being there is no secret - it was made public over 2 weeks ago!

Now tell me this, what do you think is more likely - That a diagnosis was made weeks ago right about the time Jobs decided not to do the Keynote (when he wants to spend time with his wife and family for once in 11 years) - these things are prepared weeks in advanced - and that Jobs (in typical fashion consistent with his bout with Cancer - the board was aware of it), knowing that this does not affect his role as CEO (something the board publicly agreed with - and they aint lying when they state confidence) never talked about it. ORRRR.... That a discovery was made just this morning and Jobs made an uncharacteristic press announcement that.... He will still be CEO for a long while and the Board agrees saying that we will announce it if his health becomes a factor.

What evidence do you have that the discovery was made today as you assert>

Steve is Smart?

I haven't read throw all the reply, but does anyone realize that he is kinda smart move to release a public letter a day before MacWorld Keynote; It make people get more focusing on the Keynote indeed.

I m not sure if he planned or not, but it definitely make myself more looking forward in tomorrow's keynote. :D

I see some major cross-promotional potential for Jobs appearing on a future episode of "House," which in turn gets a nice slot on the front page of iTunes. :D

On a more serious note, it's a shame that the 11 pages worth of comments thus far are littered with people questioning the integrity of his admissions. Regardless of what's going on, give the guy some privacy, for crying out loud... he's human just like the rest of us! He's got a wife and family that have probably been worrying like crazy about him!

Steve IS dying.
And so are we all, every moment we live.

Life is terminal.

Who knew Steve Jobs' health news could turn us all into a bunch of Tyler Durdens?

"You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time." :D

I think you jumped to that conclusion a little too fast.
My statement was a weak attempt at dark comedy.
Remember Tyler Durden also said,
“Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.”

I don't know when the man was diagnosed. All I know is I logged on to macrumors and I see this letter that was put out the day before the keynote, saying Jobs is good to go.

I see what you are trying to do, and when people are trying to prove a point, they mix and match so that it all comes together into one idea. Yeah, there is what I think happened, but the one true fact is that Jobs has been rumored to die for a while, and news stations even ran the story, not just some goofy blog like Gizmodo.

The fact that you agree that apple had to say something, now, amplifies my question of why. Did they release this farce to protect the stocks on the eve of a keynote? If he got diagnosed a long time ago, why wait, and drop a simultaneous note with the big board guys?

Sometimes you don't have to look very deep into stuff to call bullsh$%.
All we know is what Jobs tells us. We also know that people have been saying things about his death for ages. Great timing by his doctors, the board, and himself to get this message out before the keynote.

For all ANYONE knows, jobs didn't even right the letter. Using that logical progression mumbo-jumbo you brought to the table, I am sure you can agree with that statement.

The fact that you call it BS and a farce with NOTHING to back it makes me beleive you are either trying to troll or just incredibly stubborn.

Hes been reported dying for years now by the media? Woo those guys are really good, i remember hearing from them that Iraq had nuclear weapons and that we were going to take out a threat to us.

Guess what, both based on BAD INTELLIGENCE.

Tell me who has anything? Can anyone backup the idea that Jobs just so happened to put out this letter in coop with the company, on the Eve of the Keynote? If it was so personal and from the heart, why the coordination?

In the years of posting on forums, I have found that people use the word "troll" sometimes, when someone has a different point of view than them, and they are running out of logic. I could have said the same line to any of the blind people in this thread. I choose not too because I understand that you all have an opinion, and I don't expect you to change it. I do at some point expect for a little reason to surface.

Well there was that cute little story Gizmodo decided to run yesterday that set off a panic......

Not to be rude or anything, but clearly you should have re-read it or looked more clearly since it has been well known that Jobs was not keynoting for a couple of weeks. The Announcement was made to lessen the impact of rumors of Jobs health during Macworld since Jobs himself was not going to do the announcing. There is no way one can infer that the diagnosis was made today - not knowing what we know of Apple's recent press releases.

Nobody had any doubt that he was alive and well, however Jobs just made an announcement that could have been done at any old time - it wasn't like this was a last minute cancellation here. The wording of the letter makes it bloody obvious that a diagnosis has been made a while ago and that Jobs was simply trying to end all of the nonsense rumors for good.

The timing only looks suspicious because people want to see it that way. The reality of the matter is that Job's was saying "Our announcement two weeks ago has sent the health rumor mills into overdrive and I won't be at the keynote to debunk them and I don't want the whole costly event to be overshadowed by something I can't debunk. These health rumors are getting out of hand and we need to make a statement now while we can and they are annoying. Since you guys can't seem to take a hint that this is a private matter I am telling you that my weight loss is nothing to get concerned about and I am still the CEO and will be."

This was a well planned announcement since it was followed up by the board confirming that they have full confience in Steve - again they don't joke about these kinds of public statements. Since Jobs was well known to not be at MacWorld and it would be kind of silly for Phil to talk about it (Phil is a VP), Jobs was just getting it out of the way and try to tell the press "I am healthy, the board agrees with me, and I want some privacy".

The fact that his letter opens up with him wanting to spend time with his family and the fourth paragraph indicates that

A few weeks ago, I decided that getting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority.

and

The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I’ve already begun treatment.

Is pretty clear proof that he knew the diagnosis weeks ago and has already started when he became serious about his health

Dear Steve,

That was one of the classiest gestures, your letter that I have witnessed. Thanks for being open and sharing with the rest of the apple community. That shows that regardless of the divide of "for profit company" and buyer you feel for the closely knit community that is apple and demonstrate your respect by relating something as private. Best of luck getting well and feeling better, happy new year, enjoy the time with your loved ones...and how about that mid tower mac and them matte screens, huh?? (just joking of course. :D )

p.s. this is record breaking positive voting for mac rumors.

Lies, he still has cancer and only releasing this statement so Apple won't tank further in its stock price. Typical corporation strategy.

Best wishes

Our thoughts are with you, Steve. We all hope for a speedy and painless recovery.

What a bunch of crap.

If you are the icon of a multibillion dollar company whos stock price and therefore shareholder assets depend SIGNFICANTLY on you as the CEO then you have a fiduciary obligation (!) to be honest about health issues.

By denying any health issues for over a year, as a stockholder I have been let down by both the board and by Mr. Jobs himself. While apple stock is not a major part of my portfolio, the prinicple of the matter is critical - you CANNOT hide details and in fact outright LIE to the public in cases like this.

I wish Steve the best, and as my mother died from pancreatic cancer I have a special thankfulness that he has done so well. HOWEVER, I also expect him and the board to be honest and upfront about the health issues because they DO affect my wallet.

Best post on the thread. Oh, and fwiw, I've been a long time member, if not a frequent poster, but I had to re-register since I got my iMac and foolishly didn't write my username and password down. I DO have an incurable disease - two actually - however, cancer CAN cause weight loss. And appetite loss, regardless of what type of diet you follow.

Peace, Jennifer

Best post based on nothing, i agree.

Every forum has it's King Troll. You've proven yourself a highly resourceful one, and I nominate you. Congrats!

Nice straw man tactic. Pointedly snipping the "conspiracy" "theory" I posted as a refutation to my OWN take on the truth, and snipping when I refuted it in the conclusion.

Bottom line: Jobs is lying to keep from losing money, instead of telling the truth to save lives.

There's your Idol. Also shows why Apple saw no problem whatsoever using its early adopters as beta testers all these years. And purposely screwing up each version of the OS right before the next one came out.

I nominate you King Fanboi/Shill. Congrats!

And your assertion is based on...?

Apple is already under close scrutiny for accounting irregularities. Do you honestly think that the company would intentionally mislead investors while under such close scrutiny? It would clearly not be worth the risk.

Most likely, Steve's current condition is an after-effect of the treatments he had in the past for his pancreatic cancer. As the pancreas secretes enzymes that are vital in the digestion of proteins and carbohydrates in the small intestine, any treatment that damages or removes part of the pancreas can limit the body's ability to utilize these vital nutrients. Fortunately, treatment of these deficiencies primarily consists of taking supplemental enzymes, which sounds pretty much like what Steve is describing in his letter.

Therefore, I'd like to suggest another possible diagnosis, celiac sprue.
Yeah, I thought about that one too, but it's not a hormone problem and it's fairly easy to diagnose, would be one of the early things you'd rule out. I'm still leaning towards pancreatic insufficiency. Agree with your point that speculation is not inappropriate, especially given that he released a statement.
