WOW! This is a very sad day!! My thoughts and prayers are with you Steve!!

How can things go on? I mean Steve Jobs is so iconic to the Apple brand that its just so mind-boggling!

Steve has changed the world of technology and made it a much better, more competitive, and innovative field.

Steve will be taught in all business schools for years to come.

I wish you the best Steve.

:apple:

Damn.

Best of luck to Tim Cook, who I believe will be successful in carrying on the Apple tradition and culture, and continue to lead in innovation. Steve has left his mark.

I wish Steve all the best. It'll be interesting to see Apple's direction now.

This isn't like 1985 where Steve and anything related to him was expunged from the company. It's going to be like the Walt Disney Co. after Disney passed away where enough material had been written internally and enough culture had been instilled that every employee asks "WWSJD" before doing something and do it well.

Surely nearly all of us knew this day was coming and sooner rather than later. I'm sure Steve knew it too. His return to Apple saved a company that had been savaged by greedy and incompetent managers. He made a key change to his own former management style. Instead of a 'ME' view, he promoted a 'US' view and surrounded himself with highly competent levels under his leadership. That will keep Apple going and going well into the future. So, best to 'ya Steve and Thanks, really!

Apple will ride the wave created by Steve Jobs for some time.

The innovation and market changing success
will remembered for generations to come.

He is a true legend.

Jobs is an amazing leader and technologist and we're lucky to live in the era of his accomplishments. I would really like to hear that he's going to be relaxing on a yacht or sitting back and enjoying himself in whatever way he wants. But I also know that if he was in perfect health he'd probably prefer running Apple to retiring.

I wish him well whatever is to come.

I'm not convinced this means his health is failing him. I think he honestly believes it's best for the company as a whole.

Steve is getting older, and he puts absurdly high expectations on himself and those close to him. His tech buddy, Gates, stepped down from MS years and years ago. Tim cook has been fantastic for this company, and as a CEO, could theoretically be better than Jobs himself. Job's strength is his mind, his ability to cut through nonsense and focus on the end goal. His weakness is his social skills, while an unbelievable stage presence, he's apparently a bit abrasive on a personal level.

The job of the CEO is very much to be a figurehead and bring people together. With apple stretching into more and more markets, and being required to interface with more third party companies everyday, Jobs really might not be the best for that position. As the chairman of the board, he can oversee product development and business timelines without being caught up in negotiations with china unicom (for example).

I'm sure this will effect the stock, but I don't see why. Apple still will be selling the same products. The only downsides to this wouldn't be noticeable for years, once apple starts releasing new products not influenced by steve directly. There's no reason to assume from this message that such a day has begun.

Thanks for all the hardwork, Steve. I wish you the best going forward.

Sad day indeed. Apple will never be the same without Steve.

Wow! I am shocked but understand and respect him for stepping down instead of the company crashing if something happens to him. I am sure the market will react tomorrow and in time people will calm down and the stock will rise again based on Tim Cook driving the bus. With the potential of new products coming out soon this will become second page news very soon.

I just read this on CNN. I believe apple has nailed the market. I just hope there's more tech "revolutions" instead of evolutions of there product base.

My wife just texted me: "Thought you might be interested in knowing steve jobs just resigned."
(i immediately came here and gizmodo)

here sits a 40 year old (almost) man with a genuine broken heart.

thanks for the toys and inspiration Steve
