I'm not convinced this means his health is failing him.

I hope we never have to find out.

Wow, horrible news. This man has had a huge impact on my life. Started out on the Apple II+ and have been an Apple fan ever since. Hope you get well, Steve! Thanks for everything!

As for the pathetic trolls who are tasteless enough to bring their trash into this thread, may I suggest everyone take the opportunity to update your Ignore lists. Unheard trolls are trolls that eventually go away.

Sad to say, this is not a surprise.

He certainly looked very ill. I can't imagine anything but illness that would move him to step down.

I hope reducing the pressure of the CEO position helps improve his health.

I wish him well...

Sad day indeed. Apple will never be the same without Steve.

He hasn't left Apple, just changed seats ;).

It’s got to be hard to take on a “new role” in something you’re so close to. But it’s good that he’s able to step back and make that tough call.

With any luck, this means less of him micromanaging, and negotiating, and all those other responsibilities, and more of him guiding products and generating ideas. (Not to mention getting/staying as well as possible, given the surgeries he’s had.)

(He’ll probably get a pay cut from $1.00 to 50 cents. He should have enough stock and savings to manage that, though!)

I really doubt Jobs can be Jobs without micromanaging, and negotiating, and all those other responsibilities. Dont even think he wants to be that Jobs. Arent all those things the reason why he is the man he is in first place?

He's gonna die.

He hasn’t been “healthy” (which is only a relative term) for a long time, and he may never be fully “healthy” again. (Stephen Hawking could say the same.) That does interfere with the ability to be a CEO and do six million things, for sure. But it doesn’t necessarily mean the worst any time soon. Nobody including his doctors knows that for sure—and taking a lighter workload is clearly a healthy step to improve anyone’s prospects!

So, since we don’t know (and may never know) his private medical details, the only kind of guess we can make is: would reducing your duties make sense if you were constantly or frequently ill (tired, in pain, or simply needing to spend time with treatment)? Yes, it would, even if you live to be 100—and we knew he already had reduced his duties—greatly—while keeping his hand in too. Now that step is permanent.

We know nothing more yet, but I hope this change is a good one for him. I’m not worried about Apple’s direction—the management team is a good one that shares Steve’s vision.

I was blown away for a second and initially shocked and saddened. But let's man up and move forward with Tim Cook leading Apple and continue just kicking everyone's ass when it comes to products and innovation.

I wish Mr. Jobs the best with his new role, and hope that his health improves.

I expect as Chairman, Mr. Jobs will continue to have a strong influence on Apple's direction.

I think many investors have either anticipated Mr. Jobs eventual resignation, or see the new structure (Chairman-Jobs, CEO-Cook) in a positive light.

The stock is only down slightly (~0.18%) in after hours trading.

This type of staged transition is very intelligent, and best for Apple, customers, and investors.

I wish the best Steve Jobs. Let's hope Tim will have the same innovation that Steve Jobs would of had at the keynotes.... :)

I too, wish the best for him - and any cancer patient for that matter.

I guess this makes sense, after his official / authorized biography will be released in short, and second editions or addendums are kind of unheard of when it comes to biographies.

Plus, his health is not in top shape - I guess the smart thing to do is to take care of himself, enjoy the rest of his life, enjoy his family... instead of spending his last days in an corporate office. He's got enough money, made enough money for investors, revolutionized a whole industry... I guess he can relax and let go a little bit now.

No doubt this will affect Apple - but it's not like it was anywhere near perfect anyway...

Sad to say, it's the end of an era. It was an amazing run, from a company on the verge of bankruptcy to the most highly capitalized company in the world.

I wish him health and happiness. But no one can truly take his place.

All the best Steve. Unbelievable job you have done for Apple. They'll never be the likes of you again.

I'm a basketball fan and in a similar way, after Jordan retired, the NBA have never replaced him.
