We obviously don't know what the future holds for Steve, buts let's look at the positive here:

Good timing all things considered, orderly succession, Jobs still around doing the fun stuff and guiding, Apple stock now up about $3 at 6:00 pm CST. It's going to be fine.

i think if he doesent fully leave apple he will have so much influence that there will really be no difference

I hope this is the case. It's possible: just exchanging one role for another.

I hate to say it, but a part of me thinks that's being a bit too optimistic. I hope that part's wrong.

Noooooooo !!!

Steve you just Changed the world.......

You Started it all with the Macintosh, the best personal computer in its age.....
you didn't stop there!, the iPod, Changed the whole music industry
and also the iPhone and the iPad..........

I hoped that you will continue being the CEO of apple, but its you decision after all :( :(

Wow! I am shocked but understand and respect him for stepping down instead of the company crashing if something happens to him. I am sure the market will react tomorrow and in time people will calm down and the stock will rise again based on Tim Cook driving the bus. With the potential of new products coming out soon this will become second page news very soon.

Guess we shouldnt make this into a stock analyst-thread, but i'd say that people will be looking very closely at the products Apple launch in the near future.

To everybody worried about their stocks:

You are the reason why the stock market is so ****ed up. This isn't a bad thing for apple, tim cook is just as capable as steve ever was. This should be seen as a positive move. Change isn't a bad thing.

You should be more concerned about Steve's health, you selfish bastards!

It's the end of an era for Apple, still can't believe it, he did so much in such a short time, multiplying so many innovations...
I tip my hat to one of the 21st century's best CEO, I-we'll-miss him an awful lot... :(

I liked Steve Jobs! Sad to see him go.

I don't get why people are talking like this is the end of the line for Apple. Have some damn faith in a company its not like they are going to go downhill just because he resigned as CEO. He's still on the board helping. People are so quick to make judgements and it only hurts the cause you are making judgements about.

Tim should hire Wozniak to do keynotes and product announcements. Well unless Jobs is feeling up for it.

Sad news indeed. Best wishes to Steve, his family, friends, and co-workers at Apple.

It's pretty hard to summarize the incredible contributions you've made to the world we live in: Not just computers, but movies, phones, music, and now tablets.

But as great as those achievements have been, I think one of the greatest (if not so heralded) has been the incredible team you've put together at Apple. You values, vision, and pursuit of incredible excellence will remain - no matter what job title.

Whatever the future holds, I just wanted to let you know how the products you've brought to life have made my life, and the world I live in, so much better and richer.

Thanks.

I hope his health is OK and wish him the best. If the resignation isn't health related, it may actually be the best time to bow out. He's completely turned the company around and made it the largest US company by market cap. Quite frankly, there is no where to go but down from here.

Unless you expect Apple to become the biggest company in the world, the biggest company the world has ever known, and then eventually run the whole world.

If it is do to health, it's just another reminder to all of us that no matter how much money, influence, and fame you might have, you can't acquire health.

Crazy. I don't think it will change much, later on. But still, it freaking stinks. I'm in junior high, and he's pretty much been someone Ive seen as very determined and accomplished since as long as I have known what Apple is.:(

A very sad day for Apple and all of us Apple fans... Steve Jobs is a marketing genius and there will never be another like him...

Steve,

So sad to hear this news! I hope one day we can still see you at an Apple keynote event. We honestly love you and appreciate all you have contributed to the world to supply humanity with the most brilliant tools and inventions in recorded history. You have had an immense impact on countless in this world who will continue your legacy of innovation and inspiration in all their various fields. Your vision is legendary and your business skills are admired the world over. We wish you the best in your health and in all you do in the remainder of your time with us, your family, and loved ones. Here's to your continued insight in Apple as chairman of the board.

"Here’s to the crazy ones.

The misfits.

The rebels.

The troublemakers.

The round pegs in the square holes.

The ones who see things differently.

They’re not fond of rules.

And they have no respect for the status quo.

You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.

About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.

They push the human race forward.

And while some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

Because the people who are crazy enough to think
that they can change the world… are the ones who do."

Wow. I sure hope this isn't because of his health starting to let go, but something tells me it is.

Best to you Steve! and God bless.

I think it is almost safe to say that with that following Job's passing, Apple can only decline from here on out.

Undoubtedly, Apple will continue to be profitable and the upcoming projects Jobs oversaw will yet again take the world by storm. Still, no one else in the company matched his level of charisma or his vision.

The numerous rivals the company has made over the years, including but not limited to Google, Microsoft (it's long time rival), Sony, Nintendo, Rim, can smell blood and will be ready to pounce.

Remember that Germany was doing well for itself in 1941- until they found themselves in a two front war with the Russians, the British, the Americans and the Canadians all simultaneously.

Apple is surrounded by its enemies and now its leader, who has led the fray time and again, will soon be gone.

This was a very wise decision!

Especially if his health is turning to the worse (which I hope not).

It will show that Apple is Apple without him at the helm (although I wouldn't call Chairman of the Board of Directors a lesser title) and the transition will be much better this way compared to the unthinkable (e.g. his untimely demise).

We are in good hands with Tim Cook.

Good luck with all your future endeavors, Mr. Jobs!
