I don't get it. People on here act as though steve jobs was the designer and creator of every single apple products the last 10 years. Wasn't he infamous for putting his name on patents that he had nothing to do with? I'm sure apple will be fine. Overreacting fan boys has become the norm amongst apple users i'm afraid.

I have nothing but respect for Steve Jobs, but there are some serious jocksniffers(or code-sniffers may be more appropriate)on here. I will never understand the love that some of you have for a for-profit corporation.

Nobody can replace Steve Jobs. You shouldn't be expecting Tim Cook to be like Steve. It's impossible.

Every human being has his/her own personality and we will have to respect that. I think that John Ivy will be presenting more now...

I think it is almost safe to say that with that following Job's passing, Apple can only decline from here on out.

Undoubtedly, Apple will continue to be profitable and the upcoming projects Jobs oversaw will yet again take the world by storm. Still, no one else in the company matched his level of charisma or his vision.

The numerous rivals the company has made over the years, including but not limited to Google, Microsoft (it's long time rival), Sony, Nintendo, Rim, can smell blood and will be ready to pounce.

Remember that Germany was doing well for itself in 1941- until they found themselves in a two front war with the Russians, the British, the Americans and the Canadians all simultaneously.

Apple is surrounded by its enemies and now its leader, who has led the fray time and again, will soon be gone.

And our first Godwin's Law post.

Congratulations. A more inappropriate comparison I could never have thought of.

Steve, you've changed the world for millions of people. Thank you for everything you have done, your high standard to excellence and for not giving in to less than that.

Wishing you well. I, for one, will always be standing by you.

Wow, best of luck to him.:(

Thank you for all the excitement, suspense, more excitement, and more suspense. You've done so much for the industry and your work shows that.

I love my Apple products even more now.

Get well, Steve!

Think or hate on Apple whatever you want. But don't hate on Steve.

Steve, we're pulling for you. Hope you are doing okay!

Sorry, but that's actually naive thinking.....he was Apple. It's one of those things that doesn't tie in with business school thinking and case studies. Whatever he did just worked at apple, it shouldn't have, but it did.

I don't think Apple will be the same again to be honest.

I hope you are wrong. But you probably aren't. I don't know this Tim Cook guy, but our only hope is that Steve Jobs was his mentor. He must not try to be Steve, but he must not try too hard to be different either. I hope he asks himself "what would Steve do?". I've seen many CEOs take over new companies and try to put their "stamp" on it, and then ruin it. :(

I'm not convinced this means his health is failing him. I think he honestly believes it's best for the company as a whole.

Steve is getting older, and he puts absurdly high expectations on himself and those close to him. His tech buddy, Gates, stepped down from MS years and years ago.

55 is not old by a long shot. If Steve is stepping down from a role he loves in a world where his tasks could be accomplished remotely and without travel then you can take that as a bad sign for his health and energy levels.

Gates stepped down to work on other projects like his foundation and public speaking. He didn't do so out of necessity.

Again, I'm not so positive he loves being the CEO of the company apple has become. The CEO of apple's responsibilities have less and less to do with making new computers and more to do with liscensing agreements and managing the global business of apple. For proof of this, his successor is Tim Cook and not Scott Forstall or John Ives.

I'm not positive of my analysis, I'm just saying I'm not convinced this is as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be. If he was really getting to sick to do this, why would he want to be the chairman of the board? I think he loves building the computer of tomorrow, not talking about it, as he's been quoted of saying, and honestly, the CEO of apple is spending more time these days talking and less time playing with technology.

Think I am going to cry.

Don't think I'll buy many more Apple products after the next few as they would have Jobs' influence the most!

Apple will be fine

First of all Tim Cook has been running the company ever since his latest Medical leave. He isn't gone, he will still be chairman of the board. He will and always be part of this company, he just wants a new role.

I think this is actually a good thing for Apple. Tim Cook, by all accounts, is an outstanding executive, and he'll bring a bit more stability to the company as its head. Steve Jobs is notoriously temperamental, and often blinded by his ideology. That's what Apple needed to revolutionize so many industries, and save it from the brink, but now we need a more practical approach. Steve assembled an amazing team under him that will continue to be incredibly creative and change the world, but now I expect the Mac will not be quite so neglected. Perhaps things that Steve Jobs reviled, like computer gaming, will get more attention. Perhaps hardware won't get pulled at the last minute because of leaks from other companies.

This is, unfortunately, bad news for Steve Jobs. He's very likely been given an expiration date. Here's hoping he remains chairman for a very long time.

Hopefully Steve will be on the board, not only that but continue to have a pull in what goes on in the products. I wish him and his family best of luck and i hope apple does the best it cant without him at the helm.
He did state his wish to continue to chair the board. So we may still continue to see some of his influence on the company and its products.

I think that for reasons of his health, he has realized that he can no longer put all of his energy into micromanaging things, but due to his personality, he cannot stop himself from doing so. Therefore, the only solution is to distance himself from the temptation.

It is not the role of the Chairman of the Board to micromanage. He can still guide Apple, but the day-to-day decisions will now be left to Cook. In the long run, probably not a bad thing, because Jobs has been unable to carry out his duties for some time, and Apple does not need to have a mere figurehead for a CEO. With Jobs' role in limbo, the company was at risk of drifting aimlessly while awaiting further announcements regarding his health.

Maybe as Steve gets further away from daily operations Apple will see the light and move back into areas where they lately seem to be leaving.

It should be possible to concentrate on both lightweight laptops and pro-grade desktops. Unlike the latest trends suggest it is also possible to produce both a great iOS device OS and still improve on a desktop OS for experienced users.

Really really sad to see Steve leave - at least it will give him time to focus on his health without being so stressed out.
