Having a Father with the same drive & intensity as Mr Jobs, I kind of wish Apple wouldn't have made him Chairman of the Board, & instead just bought him a nice sunny island to sit on & watch sunsets for a while... get some pretty Mexican girls playing volleyball on there or something.... He's earned himself some quality R&R at this point. Ehhh guys like that just can't take standing idly by, can they...

If the stock dives, I'm buying like it's 2008.

Hopefully its for the best, I've been sick to my stomach with the tyrant-like ways of apple with patents and lawsuits.

Those who don't understand Apple . . . are doomed to post nonsense like yours.

Those "tyrant-like ways" have always been there. They're the reason Apple is run like the tightest ship in the biz, and is the most successful tech company of our time.

Wow, totally didn't see that coming. Not right now at least. Best of luck to him..

Holy crap. Kinda just got the wind knocked out of me :(

I hope he is at the upcoming keynote. It'd be nice to just see him on stage one more time.

It actually didn't SHOCK me all that much reading about this knowing about his condition. In a span of 8 days, we saw Google buy Motorola, HP dropping out of the mobile and PC hardware market, and Steve Jobs now resigning. Wow. Crazy August in tech news.

Every good thing can come to an end. Every empire loses their true leader and we see it crumble. Our life all has an ending too. Steve is showing his mortality as a human being. Better to take care of that more than success that doesn't last forever and ever either. For every rise to the top, there is a decline.

Your health is your wealth. Steve, just spend your time with the family and take of yourself. I can't expect him to live or work forever knowing of his frail condition. Interesting to see Apple keynotes without him. From the Apple years without Steve Jobs weren't exactly the rosiest. But Steve has already fed the DNA and "germ" back into Apple's way of thinking and succeeding. So they should be fine for the foreseeable future as well as that $75B in cash reserves.

End of an era

Not entirely unexpected given his health issues but sad nonetheless. We've had an Apple computer in our family since the very first Macintosh. I wish Steve well.

The stock will no doubt tank tomorrow, but at the end of the day, Apple is much more than just Steve Jobs. Tim Cook has proven to be a capable CEO, and the company is in stellar condition. With all of the talent they have at Apple, they will continue to thrive.

Don't worry as long as Steve is present at Apple and is able to make decisions, give advices and maybe make an appearance at Apple's shows, Apple will be alright.

I hope he demands perfection as well.

Sorry to hear this.

Charles Manson and Bernie Madoff get to outlive Jobs.

Just goes to show you that life is not supposed to be fair.

****. Steve is the driving force behind this company.

I hope his health gets better, and I'm sure going to miss him as CEO.

So sad to see Steve resign. At least he's not completely leaving Apple.

We'll miss seeing you at all the keynotes Steve! :(

I wonder what the deathpoolers are putting the over/under at — six months?

I don't mean to be grim, but the writing appears to be on the wall. We just can't read the fine print with the particulars of how long Jobs intends to spend with his family and addressing whatever few "bucket list" items he might have.

I wish him a blissful future, however long it may last. His insight and unyielding standards resulted some truly wonderful pieces of technology that made using even a seven-year-old computer enjoyable.
