No offence but about friggin time Steve!! Finally the man realises there is more to life then a business. Now go and spend more time with your family and loved ones! And look after your health as best you can.

Oh and I'll miss your stage product launches, Mr Cook just isn't the same :(

Expect Craig Federighi to do those presentations.

This is how I feel.

There are people who only know hate and destruction... I´m talking to you trolls!

Its a sad day for Apple and for the tech industry as a whole, he is also Human and deserve respect and compassion.

As if the fanboys on this site wouldn't do the same thing if Steve Ballmer or Bill Gates went out.

Anyways they are idiots but so are the people who treat Jobs like a god. He did good for the company but giving him sole credit for their success is ridiculous. It's a shame apple hides the true talent behind curtains.

Here's to Steve, a man who came in and turned Apple around. Jobs is a remarkable innovator who always took the time to reply to stevejobs@apple.com. Here's to hoping Sculley doesn't come back and Tim can carry Jobs' weight.

as that weight is currently about 50 lbs I think my 10 year old nephew could probably carry his weight :(

Here's to hoping that Steve will still show up to the September keynote and reveal the iPhone 5.

Agh... these keynotes won't be the same without him as CEO... Apple just won't feel the same without him. I knew this day would come, but never thought it'd be just like that...

Man... :(

The board of director's AND SJ guided the company where it is today. He didn't do it alone, and it wasn't all his doing..

He still needs a vote from the board of director in order to kill a project...

James

Don't kid yourself - STEVE made Apple what it is today. That board of directors couldn't innovate the product details and execution that we have been experiencing.

Basically Jobs accomplished his main goal of ensuring Apple's future by 2006-2007. The last several years has simply been icing on the cake for Apple fans. Apple creatively has been on auto-pilot for several years with Jonathan Ive being the real driving force.

Steve is not Chair of the Board. Tim is not CEO. Note that Steve says 'if the board sees fit' and 'recommends'.

While the above is likely to happen. It will not happen until the board decides. Thus you should not report this as fact.

In all fairness, and for all his great ideas, Apple needs a new lease of life. Is perceived cult status will be the death of Apple (in 10-15 years) and the gradual, slow change needs to happen.

At first I was voting you down, but reconsidered. Apple does show the potential to fall into the same view as Microsoft if their not careful. It's all about managing perceptions, and there is a slew of people out there who see Apple as the next antichrist of technology and not totally without merit.

Though, I don't know that I think Tim Cook demonstrates that passion that Steve Jobs has, or anywhere near close to it. Jobs was still hands on with products, but where he's been wildly successful over the years is getting talented people to create great products and with great industrial design, but then dictating what the outcome should be. Steve was an inventor. Tim's all business (correct me if I'm mistaken on that.)

Steve Jobs has this ability to make you want whatever he throws out there. Tim Cook makes me want to take a nap. Steve Ballmer (while wildly annoying and the makings of a great dart board) with his insane ramblings can at least be interesting. Though, maybe Tim can soften some of the "evil" perception Apple has garnered through success. (Some of it merited, most of it not.)

As if the fanboys on this site wouldn't do the same thing if Steve Ballmer or Bill Gates went out.

Absolutely not. I may think Ballmer is an idiot. I may think he should have been kicked to the curb a long time ago, I may think he's running the company into the ground - I make no bones about this - but I would never wish poor health or death on him. He's still a human being. Gates is still a human being. These people have lives and families. People who care about them.

The old "as if you wouldn't do the same" line is an incredibly poor way of defending an (apparently your) indefensible position.

this sucks. Stocks are down $19...

I wish Steve well. Tim Cook, you have a lot of eyes looking towards you.

Steve Jobs worked for 14 years building up a great*and astonishing team at Apple.
We should all be grateful for this, and understand that both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs made the world a better place.

Thank you for your time Steve, I hope I'll see you and get to tell you how you with one keynote made me change my life to change other people's life.

Hopefully its for the best, I've been sick to my stomach with the tyrant-like ways of apple with patents and lawsuits.

If you think Apple == only Steve Jobs, you're just dumb. FYI, the "tyranny" has taken place in absence of Steve Jobs in the last half a year, so get your pills and vomit bucket ready, the future's gonna cause you a lot more sickness. (Frankly I hope it does).

I wonder if the HP Couldntsellshitpad outsold the xCouldntsellsh*tServe...

Every company, even Apple *GASP* has made products that couldn't sell...

The Xserve doesn't have a touchscreen and fit in my pocket or briefcase.

Servers don't change the face of consumer tech. Apple's consumer lineup, however, absolutely does.

Sums it up for me too.

I don't know the chap so I don't have a personal bond with him or his health situation, but I haven't been happy with the way Apple has been run recently. I'm sure I'm in the minority but I'd like to see a change in direction for Apple and not what they once parodied in that famous advert.
