Holy Axis! What's now for Apple? But i believe Steve has left future action plans and product lines , directions that Apple Inc. will have to walk to reign the future already. So no worries!

I just can't believe it. This is truly the end of an era.

I will say that lately, Steve has been a fan of more minor updates to product lines, so hopefully Cook will be a bit more ballsy and release exciting new products like steve used to.

I've been forced to use 2000, XP and I've dabbed with Vista (failure) and Windows 7 i.e. rebagded Vista. I stand by what I said. Nothing good since 98SE.

oh and zune and windows phone, hahaha, do I even need to go there?

Use Linux then, you'd be much happier.

Have you used:

Microsoft Exchange
Microsoft SQL Server
Microsoft SharePoint
Microsoft Dynamics CRM
Microsoft BPOS

The list goes on. I bet you, that you haven't.

You are in the minority that feel like that. Windows 2000 and XP were quite stable. Windows Vista was stable providing you actually gave it want it wanted. Windows 7 just happily sits there in the corner and doesn't bother you.

Windows Phone 7 is different, at the moment, it is looking more appealing than iOS. I've used an iPhone since it was released in the UK, and I am pretty bored of it.

I think want you want is a somewhat dull operating system.

That's less than half of those products, ultimately proving his point.

2000 was meh.
XP was godlike. Quake style godlike.
Vista was awful.
7 is godlike.
Server '03 and '08 are godlike.
Visual Studio is godlike.

I really think this isn't at all that of a bad news.
Sure, I'll miss Steve heavily, and I know the stocks will go down tomorrow for sure, but I think that his leave, though sudden, is "better than later" situation.

What do we have in the upcoming year?
1) iPhone 5
2) iPad 3
3) New macbook pro redesign as rumored
4) those "unheard of new mac" rumors

I saw Tim Cook's resume at CNN money, his profile is low-key, but he's still pretty decent. http://money.cnn.com/2011/08/24/technology/cook_apple.fortune/index.htm?cnn=yes
Then we also have Johnny Ive to design products......the team is still here....
I'm sure iPhone 6 or iPad 4 will do well as well.

Sure Steve = Apple, but I'm sure the stocks will rebound sometime soon.
Hey, he's still Chairman!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of my favorite photos of Mr. Jobs. Good reminder for many that he's human after all. It's even more poignant now because he knew that it was going to be his final keynote at WWDC. I pray that he is able to enjoy more time with that lovely woman and the rest of his family now.

The question is: Will he be hosting the September event?

I cannot imagine a keynote without Steve...

Is this really a big deal?

Steve will still be a chairman and his visions will influence apples product line. He had to retire at some point.... might as well be today. Besides your precious apple stock dropping, I don't see what all of the commotion about.

For those of us in Canada, this has a worrying similarity to Jack Layton, Leader of the Official Opposition, who announced he was stepping aside to battle cancer for a month or two and then he would be back. He died this week.

I hope Steve is just bowing out at a good time for the company when it will have the least impact. He deserves to see the amazing success that is going to continue.

Thank you for taking the risks Steve and letting creativity not profit prevail (and look what happens anyway!)

I immediately thought of the Jack Layton connection when I read this story. It is eerily similar.

Layton brings the NDP from the brink of losing party status 10 years ago to being the official opposition today.

Jobs brings Apple from the brink of bankruptcy in the late 90's to the most valuable US company a few days ago.

Layton stepped down a few months ago to fight cancer and come back in September. Sadly, he didn't make it. I hope this is not the reason why Jobs, is stepping down, but it's the first thing in most peoples minds.

Not innovative at all.

Ever heard of Darwin BSD? Probably not. It's what Apple stole and based your OS off of. You want to know a close relative of BSD in general? Linux.

Take a wild guess how many app stores Linux has.

3+, last time I checked. The were doing that stuff years ago. There is NOTHING innovative about Apple. It's just that nobody catches them because they steal their ideas from obscure stuff.

Isn't BSD open source? Weren't SunOS and some other operating systems based on it? What's wrong with adopting an open source portion of an operating system? Just asking.

Oh, you were serious? I took your post as sarcasm and agreeing with me.

I think you are on the wrong website.

Tim Cook has some incredibly large shoes to fill. I'm not convinced that he won't become John Sculley II.

Sculley ran Pepsi.

Cook has essentially been running Apple for quite some time.

There's no comparison. Apple will do well under Cook. Very well indeed.

2000 was alright. XP was amazing, it's still nowadays used more than 7. Vista wasn't too bad either, those who went 'lol slow stuff' were either trolls or people that weren't used to a completely new OS or they had a bad PC.
Windows 7 is great, always does the job, faster than Vista etc.

7 is real successful, and so is XP in the world.
You're however right about the zune and Windows phone, those are indeed a failure. But damn, a company can't always have its best.
Beside, I'm pretty sure you've never tried those Windows servers, they are amazing.

Yeah. That's it. How profound you are.

But that's the issue! That IS it!

I've literally calculated the cost of a self-built version of the best iMac money can buy you. It turns out to only be about $800, compared to the $2000 iMac, and that's even with an upgraded video card!

Board now has a Chairman

It's interesting that until today, Apple's board was still officially without a designated Chairman. For Jobs to ask to be made Chair (and recreate the position that had been gone for several years) does not indicate he does not still want to steer the ship.

Although the tone of his letter was certainly ominous, he has not totally left.

Let's hope he's just sick of negotiating cellphone contracts.

Did you calculate the cost of the 27" monitor (at an equivalent specification), which runs around $900 minimum?

Well... Things have been so well for apple, that I think the path is now set.

All I can ask for now is a blu-ray player in my MB pro.
