Thanks Steve, Get Better Soon

I am a long time reader of MacRumors. This is my first post.

I read this website almost every day. The reason I do is simple—I love the Mac, and Apple the company, and this site is the best at reporting on it.

I am a not a computer geek, whatever that is. I follow all things Apple because of what the Mac has given me and continues to do for me.

The Mac saved my career.

I always liked the idea of a computer, but they just scared the heck out of me when I sat down in front of one.

Not the Mac.

I thought I'd write my first book when I got my first one, but I got sidetracked on another Apple invention—eWorld.

Before you laugh, eWorld made my first venture onto the internet bearable. And that first Mac—a Performa (yikes!)—made the transition into a person who's business is run on a Mac, and based on the internet, relatively painless and fun.

But that computer was flawed. And as I did some research, I knew why.

Steve Jobs was not at the helm.

When he took the company over again, I told my best friend to load up on Apple stock. It was $13 a share. He bought at $16 and sold at $50 something. I wish I wasn't flat broke at the time.

Of course Apple, and the Mac, got better everyday since. And now I have a 2011 iMac i7, an iPhone 4, an iPad, a new Apple TV and an old one, a PowerMac G5 tower that still runs good, a MacBook Pro, and a brand new MacBook Air.

The products are great, and the company has done a lot for a lot of people.

Me included.

I just wanted to say thank you Steve. Thank you very much.

Get better real soon, you are in our prayers.

:( You know the day is coming. Just never want to see it here. Thanks, Steve! Apple gave me a whole new career.

Nope it's not a bad brand. Too bad your cheap monitor is a TN panel unlike the iMac which has an IPS panel.

IPS panels are indeed better. However, their advantages are only significantly noticeable in areas commonly exposed to sunlight or when viewing at a strange angle.

Again, try comparing monitors similar to the imac screen.

Now shut up please

Why are you being so picky?

In general use, resolution doesn't really matter. 1920 x 1080 will do just fine when sending mail, reading news, watching videos, etc. I know you Mac fanboys like to wave your e-peen around, but that doesn't mean the general population likes to spend that much money for detail they'll probably never use to it's full potential.

But people are trying to point out that they can build a better computer with the SAME specs as the imac for cheaper.

No, I did not, as I already have a 24 inch that costed me $300, but now I feel ripped off because of this...

But even then, it would only be $1100, which is STILL $900 less than that pretty iMac.

I forgot to add that I splurged on the case a little, and since it has a goofy form factor the prettiness of the case would probably cost you in the long run.

I'm also laughing at the mindless downrating of this comment because it is something that isn't praise for an Apple product.

The monitor you link to is not of the same spec as the one in the imac. Also you don't seem to include the cost of software in your home built.

Oh why do I bother? You're just trolling anyway...

My gut feeling told me I should have bought a put option on Apple stock around this time when the news got out that the biography had been pushed to be published earlier. Would have made a killing... And believe me that anyone that recently bought put options on apple stock will make a killing this month.

On a side note, maybe Steve should for once take an example from Bill and consider using his new free time to substantially better the world for the less fortunate, if it's really true that "Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me..."

Not innovative at all.

Ever heard of Darwin BSD? Probably not. It's what Apple stole and based your OS off of. You want to know a close relative of BSD in general? Linux.

Take a wild guess how many app stores Linux has.

3+, last time I checked. The were doing that stuff years ago. There is NOTHING innovative about Apple. It's just that nobody catches them because they steal their ideas from obscure stuff.

Stole? Sorry, the BSD license allows anyone to use it anyway they want which is why there is OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, ...

I also suggest you understand the definition of "innovate" which based on your post you don't.

Just a little help in case you don't want to click on the link...
"...innovation generally refers to the creation of better or more effective products, processes, technologies, or ideas that are accepted by markets, governments, and society."

Yea... they innovate.

But people are trying to point out that they can build a better computer with the SAME specs as the imac for cheaper.

So much contradiction.

Better with the same specs? On what planet does that make sense?

Also, like I already stated, most people wouldn't care to go out and blow $500 more on a monitor than they need to. It won't directly affect their computing experience. I'm talking GPU, memory, etc.

If you don't care, and it doesn't matter...what are you doing on an Apple forum?
Besides trolling...You probably don't know the first thing about panels.

As for Steve, we all knew this was coming. He's an icon of his own making and Apple will remain viable regardless of his position.

Ok the same exact computer with the same specs for cheaper. Did that sink in for ya?

Sad to hear, but looked like his health has been an issue as of late; he would not have stepped down like this unless he ABSOLUTELY could not handle the health issues and the position at the same time.

We can only hope now that he can keep plugging along and medical science can continue to help him fight his illness

Good luck Steve!

I'm sure it's been said before, but for those who are technically knowledgable, it is easy to overlook. What Steve Jobs essentially did at Apple was to seamlessly integrate software, hardware, marketing, and customer service into a whole product experience targeted to consumers who wanted an appliance that helped them do practical or enjoyable things. This target audience cared little for hardware specifications or for software provenance, and had not the least interest in how anything worked. They just wanted to work it.

It is that vision of what technology could do--not for engineers or hobbyists, but for ordinary consumers--that distinguished Steve Jobs from anyone else. Those who fail to appreciate the importance of gorgeous design, clever and personable advertising campaigns, knowledgeable and friendly sales and support personnel, and of ease of use, may never understand why so many spent a moment today to mark the end of the active career of a unique American genius.

That was my error on the BSD licence, so yeah, you're welcome to pile on me for being wrong.

As for innovation, there really is nothing more effective or better about Macs. They aren't really accepted too well, either. If everyone loved them so much Macs would be the ones with 95% (or something like that, don't remember the exact number) of the market share.
