Didn't see that one coming.

We could not know when but the clouds have been gathering and subliminally many of us dreaded the announcement looming on the horizon..
All sorts of cloud tendrils have floated- learning that Steve was training Apple execs on The Jobs Way of doing things, lots of stuff coming out about Tim Cook so that we would feel ok when he took the reins of day to day Apple business etc etc.
WE knew but deep down we denied, we did not want to face.

Like many of you, my world feels threatened. Strange is it not? A man we don't know personally, with the reputation of not being easy to get along with.Yet we all care about him deeply along with our respect and awe.

I know Mr Jobs won't read this note or any of those posted here but I wish you,Steve, comfort and the wish that you continue to beat the chronic health issues which are nipping at your heels.

I should thank him for posting. I needed a good laugh upon hearing this sad news.

Of course, Steve would likely be pissed about all this sulking in the thread and tell us to go start the next great revolution. It's because of that kind of relentless, innovative spirit he was at the dinner below.

BEWARE of TIM COOK! He may not have the charisma of Steve Jobs, but he is a genius at the marriage and law of supply and demand.

This is one of the many BULLYING practices Apple does to its smaller competitors. Since they control and buy everything from the supply chain, most of its competitors are relegated using cheaper parts. There was an article I remember reading recently where HP wanted to put a nicer screen to the TouchPad. They couldn't have access to them because it was all reserved to Apple.

But if you have deep enough pockets like Apple does and dominate the market like they do, you can do this. Nintendo was guilty of doing this back in the late-1980's during their 8-bit heyday and Microsoft did the same thing too with Windows.

Let me get this straight, Apple spends over $3 Billion in pre-orders of panels and HP gets upset that there is no present supply? That was the least of HP's problems.

Apple received the order because they have the money and can deliver on the sales for future purchases, as was made clear with the iPod Touch and iPhone.

No materials corporation has ever previously had such good fortune as to get such a purchase before a product launch. Only a fool would pass on that.

Very Sad

I'm very sad! I don't understand that, I just hope his health is OK and that he will still participate in all important projects. We will miss you.
I hope Tim could take Apple to the same way it was going with Steve.

Although he may not read it, I just sent him a farewell email.
A little piece of me is sad and wants to cry.

Good luck Steve. We will miss you.

Apple IS Steve Jobs, and Steve Jobs IS Apple. As cold as this may be, Steve will be dead within 6 months. Apple as we know it, will also be dead in 6 months. Yes, Apple will continue, but Android will become the leader. I am and apple fan boy, but the writing is on the wall. Best wishes Steve in the next world you choose to conquer.

Our 1996 Christmas party at NeXT after the merger announcement was pure class and all encompassing. Steve covered everybody's diet choices and where several of us teased him about not passing up on the Sushi pyramids, to the carolers, to the Tarot readers, to the Numerologists, Psychics, on and on.

To my thinking it was a true San Francisco/South Bay style bash at an exclusive Country Club that one reads about but getting to experience was definitely a different beast. The hot tub partying afterwards was another nice touch.

This is the single biggest insult to the massive collection of talent that has been running the direction of Apple for the past decade. You speak like you've never had your first sip of alcohol.

As time goes on we will realize that stepping down as CEO when he did was another brilliant move on steve Jobs behalf.
Keep in mind that Steve Jobs has set up APPLE well for the next few years. Apple also has some of the best talent in the industry and will continue to recruit the Best of the Best.
Lastly Tim Cook has learned from Steve how to innovate and now has the opportunity of a lifetime to use it. He's a mastermind in his own way and
most likely will do well in following Steve Jobs ways.
And hopefully Steve Jobs as Chairman will be around to innovate while not having to deal with other things.

Stock manipulation over the next several days will be no indication of Apples future.

In any case, It will take years to see the affect of Jobs resigning if there even is one.

I am beyond sad for Steve Jobs. His absolute passion for Apple, and the innovations he has steered are more than just remarkable. For him to stand down, I cannot imagine the depth of his devastation, the psychological effect this must have on a man that has been fighting so hard, for so long, for his life.:(:(:(
When you think of what he has contributed to Technology. His iPod revolutionized the way music was distributed, turning the industry upside down and inside out. Think of cell phones before the iPhone was released. Its format, its OS - is everything that EVERY company has strived to emulate ever since (whether they admit it or not.) I remember a few short years back when the UMPC (stemming from Microsoft's original Origami Project) was announced, how it floundered for a while, then simply died. (For those that don't know about it, this was the original, small format ultra mobile tablet PC.) Then the iPad...... that he would not release until it met his vision of all that it should be - I remember watching for years, seeing all the speculation of an "Apple Tablet", the anticipation before every Macworld Expo/event, the flurry of rumors that never abated, until its release. Does anyone know of ANY product EVER, that people world-wide, lined up for, overnight/ for days/weeks, just to have one? Once again he revolutionized the way we see/interact with our computers, and once again, all the computer giants, who scoffed at Apple in the 90's, rushed to their drawing boards to copy/emulate/compete - most with limited success, (Touchpad anyone?)

Most of all though, I still cannot stop thinking of what Steve Jobs feels like right now, tonight, after stepping down as CEO from his beloved Apple - and I worry that his dreadful disease has defeated him.:(:(:(

Edit: I do apologize for being so emotional, but I am truly devastated by this news.

Perhaps you should wake up and smell the roses. He will be dead within 6 months. Apple will be like Wal Mart. Sam Walton was Wal Mart. When he died, it became a disgusting conglomerate of crap. Same will happen with Apple.

They're just handing those things out nowadays.

Gotta picture of yours?

I personally loved every day working for NeXT and Apple. Two companies you never have nor will get the privilege of experiencing.

Without NeXT Sun never creates Java. Without Java and you don't see Android.

Steve is and will always be one of a handful of personal Heroes in my life. The man will go down as one of the greatest Visionary's the world has ever known and generations to come will know who this man is and how much his dedication to his dreams and what he loved to do in life actually forced entire industries to step up or become history.

Thank you Steve. I am proud to have experienced the Apple era from the earliest days of the Macintosh. I wish, hope and pray for the best for you and your family.

Steve, you had a direct, profound, and enduring influence on a large portion of my life. Best of luck in the future! :apple:

Very interesting to see Steve Job's return back in 1997 Boston Macworld. A lot of what he says is prophetic, and details the strategy of what we see the success of Apple that it is today.

The Return of Steve Jobs to Apple Computer. He shows up at 5:37 (1997)

to all the haters out there. FYI, this is a Cinderella story of a company which came from near bankruptcy to surpassing ExxonMobile in market cap. This is a company that's making shockwaves throughout the industry as we speak. And yes, Steve Jobs should definitely be credited for its success as he's the one that restructured the company since taking over in 1997.

I'm sure it's been said before, but for those who are technically knowledgable, it is easy to overlook. What Steve Jobs essentially did at Apple was to seamlessly integrate software, hardware, marketing, and customer service into a whole product experience targeted to consumers who wanted an appliance that helped them do practical or enjoyable things. This target audience cared little for hardware specifications or for software provenance, and had not the least interest in how anything worked. They just wanted to work it.

It is that vision of what technology could do--not for engineers or hobbyists, but for ordinary consumers--that distinguished Steve Jobs from anyone else. Those who fail to appreciate the importance of gorgeous design, clever and personable advertising campaigns, knowledgeable and friendly sales and support personnel, and of ease of use, may never understand why so many spent a moment today to mark the end of the active career of a unique American genius.

Very well said.
