All the best Steve. People may diminish your contribution, but until you came along most products were hi end tech shoved in a box (occasionally good looking), with mediocre software and massive under utilization. The iPod, the iPhone, the iPad and not least of all OS X. Big wow on all of those.

I was looking forward to you finally turning the apple tv into a product and not a hobby.

A real legend in his field.

As for why this has happened let's not kid ourselves: Steve stayed on as CEO whilst he underwent treatment for pancreatic cancer and whilst he underwent a liver transplant.

I fear that this is terminal and soonish. Sorry all, but ready yourselves for the day where his passing is announced. I hate it, but be ready.

It's a new opportunity to see what Apples truly made of.

I'm sure it will run the same as it has just to soothe the shareholders for an undetermined amount of time. Then at some point things will change, and that's when the truth will be revealed.

There is a distinct possibility that in lieu of their master magician & salesman, the products will need to be more compelling. Time will tell.

Steve did not retire ... he resigned as CEO and will continue as Chairman of the board.

Jobs is Apple's first Chairman in years, but at most companies where there is a separate Chairman and CEO, the Chairman stays out of day-to-day affairs, but oversees overall strategy. It's a less stressful position. The arrangement effectively formalizes what's been in practice for the last 7 months.

That said, what today's announcement indicates is that Jobs isn't coming back. For example, Bill Gates is still chairman of Microsoft, but hasn't been directly involved with the company in 5 years.

Thank You.

Apple saved and invigorated my music production career in a way i never imagined. I made my first commercial recording on a mac. I started really getting into software music production with my first mac, a 17 inch emac g4 1ghz. Man that was an amazing little machine that i still love very dearly. I never imagined i'd feel this grateful to a company for the products they make but truly, apple has made my life so much better. I love the life that i have been afforded to enjoy by what their technology has enabled me with. One man cared enough to make a product the very best that he could and he surrounded and replicated his ideals and mindset into everyone he touched at his company and i trickled down to the very user base in large order. I take pride in what i use because Steve took pride in what i used. Thank you and bless you and your health Steve. I will roll with Tim because just like you see ahead of the curve with products, you see ahead of the curve with the individuals you entrust your baby to. I love this company.

I love you Steve. Your a great man and raised the bar to earths technological future. Though I'm afraid we'll eventually lose site and return to the clunky inefficient, and poorly conceived alternatives. Hopefully this will take decades.

Bill Gates is not retired either

It's finally happened. You've more than served your time Steve. We will all miss you. Here's to Tim Cook being a great new CEO.

This news did surprise me when it first broke though I can't say I never expected it.

I do hope Steve gets better though when he last spoke at WWDC 2011 it was almost difficult to watch. I have faith in Tim Cook in would much rather see him take over the day to day operations at full strength than I would see Steve Jobs handle things at less than 100%.

It's time to pass the torch, although I would like to see Jobs at WWDC 2012 as a special guest.

I switched to Apple because of all the positive changes Jobs brought the company throughout the past ten years. His health is more impotent than any corporate bottom line; I am just thankful for all he's done to make technology what it is today! Had the iPhone and iPad not come to market under his leadership, mobile technology wouldn't be where it is this day in 2011...

Take care of your health Steve and please keep tabs on things so Apple doesn't go the way of Microsoft after Bill Gates left as company head. God bless you and your family and all the best to you in the future, your insight on technology will be missed...

Let's show some respect for the man. His contribution is greater than anything we will ever dream of. His drive is extraordinary. I hope he enjoys a long retirement.

Tim will be a good replacement. Steve, I wish you nothing but the best. There aren't words to describe how you changed my life for the better. Thank you.

End of an era

Steve Jobs has an amazing ability to foresee or even invent the future. I've been amazed how every Apple product I've purchased over the years has become an invaluable asset to my life. I think Apple will go on, but it will never be like this again. An era has ended.

Cancer sucks.

My best wishes to Mr. Jobs and his family.

Get Well

I am glad Mr Jobs is stepping down. Because when you are that sick and keep working you never get better I'v had too many people tell me let me keep working it takes my mind off of it or i feel better when im working. Good luck Mr. Jobs and get well soon

Steve saved Apple in the 90's and made it what it is now. I think this was a good time to bow out. He was beginning to become the Steve of the 80's again who thought he was untouchable and making some bad decisions. I think at this point, everyone there gets it, and will continue the tradition as he would have, but maybe better.

Good luck, Steve- I've been with you since the beginning. Your company changed my life, and I will never forget that. I would not be who I am today without what you did. But yes, it's time to let go.
