Without Steve's iron fist holding everything back does and that rumor about the new Mac, does this mean we may finally get the "drumroll" XMAC?

Honestly I'm hoping that there'll be more openness in the Mac lineup and that the prices drop a bit across the board. Ehh, probably not going to happen.

<snip>
I am relieved that he has stepped down. Now maybe someone with 1/2 a brain (that all that is needed to do a better "Job" than "he" has been doing) will now support us professionals and give us what we paid for.

You had me until this...very poor form. Try expressing yourself differently, and maybe your expectations for his replacement will follow....

This is unprecedanted and abrupt. I just went on the NYT page to dig for news pertaining to Hurricane Irene's potential NY landfall. Yes, I know it's completely irrevelant, I was not even expecting SJ to resign in the foreseeable future.

And I saw this disheartening news on the NYT home page... there goes one of the most influential individuals in the tech industry...

SJ, you'll be missed :(. Thanks for this amazing MacBook. :D

It would be odd to see keynotes presented by Tim Cook.

Trolls exist in every community. I am sure that few people are legitimately made happier by the thought of Steve Jobs dying.

Only brainless, immature, morons are happy that someone who is the CEO of a company they don't like is dying. I suspect that the majority of the trolling posts are by teens, just as all the slobbering I love you Steve posts are. Either extreme is idiotic in my opinion. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs did much to change our world. Perhaps neither could have become what they are without the other.

Joking about the fanboys, etc is one thing, but to make fun of someone who is sick and dying is the action of a pathetic loser. One needs to know where to draw the line and not cross it.

Guys, lets keep Tim Cooks personal life. Various comments have continued to degrade this thread.

Various comments degrade almost every MacRumors news topic. You should know this by now.

MacRumors yes. But it's pretty much Mac Entertainment for me now. I don't come here anymore looking for well posted rumour articles (though there are a few notable exceptions) or intelligent posting commentary (Again a new notable exceptions, *LTD* being one of them).

I come here to enjoy the posts on this forum and see how crazy they get. That's why I'm still here and having fun.

[edit] - Nice negatives on this post. The truth is sometimes a bitter pill to swallow. And your dislike of the truth I posted here is reflected in the negatives this post has received.

For you, who has given me so much, I offer this modest haiku:

Dear Steve, Remember
when the stock falls tomorrow,
it's from love for you.

This was to be expected, to be honest i was expecting for this to happen quite some time ago (about the time when he first had health problems and cold not work any more or do his legendary media events), but i guess he did not want to let the stock brokers exploit the moment so he postpone the event until the market was not expecting it.
Now i see why the rumors of a cheeper iphone 4 to be released along side the iphone 5, i do not think Steve wold ever approve of apple putting out cheep products just for the sake of market share.
I just hope the product quality will not suffer along the road, Tim is more then capable to take over and the team of apple is a damn good one but the road ahead is very heavy for a company in it`s full glory.

Perfect strategic move!

Perfect strategic move from Apple.

Jobs resignes, iPhone 5 (which is only a minor update to 4 is released) and the hype around Jobs makes the less than cumbersome update go through without much notice (but will off course still have massive sales).

or...

The iPhone 5 is an awsome new update that will take headlines from Jobs departure and thereby prevent their stocks from plummeting.

I am relieved that he has stepped down. Now maybe someone with 1/2 a brain (that all that is needed to do a better "Job" than "he" has been doing) will now support us professionals and give us what we paid for.

I've been a Apple user and pro for the majority of the last twenty years and even though I hate the way Apple has been disregarding it's pro base lately this is not the way Apple should be changing direction to fit our desires and certainly not the way I want it to change.

If Steve was stepping down because he felt he had nothing creative to add or the market wanted something he didn't think he could deliver then that would be one thing, but by all accounts he's stepping down because he's likely terminal. That's not something anyone should be relieved about or deem worthy of celebration.

When the ipod came out and Steve was holding it, I saw it was something unique and a game changer

invested heavily

retired 2 years ago - 6 years early

Thank you Steve....

Amen! I bought 1000 shares when it went to 69.35 as the economy tanked, I will sell it next year when it hits 500, and move to the Blue Ridge Mountains, fully retired, THANK YOU STEVE! you put the icing on my cake, in the worst recession since the great depression

I am so depressed :(

This man was the Walt Disney of his time, we were lucky to have lived during his era. I can't image Apple without Steve. oh wait, I can... I have been an Apple fan since I got my first Mac as a kid in 1984. I remember the dark days, in the long, long ago. Let Tim Cook be wise and steady and guide the worlds greatest company into a bright future. And may Steve live a long, healthy life. And maybe, just maybe he still has one more gift to give humanity. Outside of Apple, Pixar and Disney. Only time will tell.

This isn't the end of the world, tim cook is a good guy and steve ill no doubt continue to influence the company for a fair while yet.

Think positive. Steve will be chairman of the board for years to come and will retire from that position a very old man.

Whatever happens is meant to happen. If he dies, it's sad, but life will go on, Apple will still be a great company, and he will be remembered. It will just be someone else's time to shine. You can never outrun death.

Look, it's terrible about his health. I really hope he gets better, though it doesn't seem too likely. But him resigning is NOT the end of the world. There is no reason to be depressed. No need to cry about one man you don't even know. You will still have great products, and this man will be able to relax and enjoy his hard-earned profits.

I thought it was funny.

I find your judgment of what is "stupid" interesting.

Oh please.. Grammar, spelling? Really?
I'm typing this on my iPad while doing some work on my main rig. So excuse me for not double/triple checking my post on the interwebz..
Another stupid post.

Here a man named Steve Jobs steps down from Apple as CEO. This could be the most important news related to a tech company and all people want to do is hope/wish/pray the man is dead; bashing other tech companies/CEO/ex-CEO; bash put down other people and it's pathetic.
What in the hell is wrong with you people????

Internet is full of jealous haters. Doesn't matter if he got rich off other people's ideas ... if it was that easy to do everyone would be doing it. History is full of people who had great ideas and nobody listened - the talent is in making others listen.

Tell that to the participants of the patent wars. Use their ideas and you'll get taken to court.

Fare thee well, Steve. Regain health. Enjoy life.

Maybe meet Woz on a coffee or two. Maybe you two old guys come up with something revolutionary.

Worst news - Tim Cook as CEO may be the person behind all these stupid decisions we had in the last couple of years. Apple will head to another Scully era.

But so what - life goes on and what matters is enjoying it. But one mor thing...

...Steve, I wish I had a look at your bucket list. Should be an interesting read. :D

A sad day....

...but a great celebration of what Steve has achieved.

May I thank you for your great vision, great design, great innovation, and simply great Apple products.

You and Apple have turned the Tech industry upside down, where you have led - others have followed.

Best wishes, and we all pray for your recovery.

A good run

Well i'm sure that we have all been lucky for the influence that Steve Jobs has had on the technology industry over the last 30 years. Im glad I had a chance to meet Mr.Jobs briefly at the last MacWorld in Tokyo back in 2000 when he looked really healthy. Like many have said, he will still be a part of the company for some time yet and I hope that we will see him attend the product releases in the future. Maybe Apple will release a special product for Steve's service to the company.

I can't believe how people mainly worry over their stock when this probably means that Steve's cancer is terminal. I hope he will get better and that he isn't in pain.
