I find it interesting that I have received three down-votes for my post. It is a legitimate opinion, and I don't know why anyone would disagree with me when I say that Jobs ran Apple into the ground, in a 'dark age' of stagnation. Maybe you hipsters are too young to have experienced the glorious times of Apple back in Wozniak's days.

Steve jobs is God !

You really need to get a grip on yourself.

Explain, please.

Remember a time when Apple actually did some serious innovation in the personal computing field, and was more than just an anti-competitive shell of a company? Apple hasn't created anything new in Jobs' time, and worse still, it encourages a cult-like attitude from its users with unsubstantial marketing terms such as 'FaceTime', which is another name for video calling, which we've had for a decade already, except it's proprietary lock-in up the ass and doesn't work over 3G.

Apple will do fine. Steve is just passing the torch. Sadly this day was going to come and I'm not really that shocked. Steve's still working for apple and his opinions will still be recognised.

Amen! I bought 1000 shares when it went to 69.35 as the economy tanked, I will sell it next year when it hits 500, and move to the Blue Ridge Mountains, fully retired, THANK YOU STEVE! you put the icing on my cake, in the worst recession since the great depression

You sir win.

Last night I was lusting over AAPL at 6/share back in 1996.

Thank you Sir

I loved my Commodore 64, I loved my Amiga …

…now I love my IPhone and MacBook Pro.

Steve made it exciting, desirable and a joy to own a personal computer again, in this new millennium. The PC world (not to mention post-PC world) would now be very different without his influence.

I tip my hat to this visionary, and wish he and his family the best.

The end of an era for sure, Steve was and still is the mastermind behind Apple. However I am not traumatized or distraught over his resignation.

If Steve is half as smart as I believe he is, He would have picked out someone great to replace him years ago.

I doubt Steve would leave the CEO position without having someone who is 110% qualified for the job.

Who knows, Steve may even find his successor even more suited for the position than he was.

Either way, I do not fear for the future of Apple, They will still make great products.

Steve's health may be in a bad state right now, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's going to die. In addition to having a healthy diet, the man has enough money to literally afford the best medical treatment. He's probably going through intense treatment right now, and can't manage the company at the same time. He might also know it's going to be a long time before his treatment is finished, and doesn't want to leave Apple without a CEO for all that time. Cancer is not exactly a quick fix either, treatment can go on for years.

I wouldn't presume to know exactly how bad his health is. Anything beyond the facts is just speculation. So let's not sit here and say "his health is failing"... we don't know anything.

No doubt in my mind he doesn't have long left, days, weeks, months, who knows but he certainly won't be a pick for my 2012 dead pool as sadly I don't think he will last that long.

If he wasn't on his last legs they would have just kept things as they are and have Cook running the company quietly in the background, no need for an announcement like this and 5% stock drop unless the end was near.

This chairman title is nothing more than a figurehead IMHO, our chairman at my work place turns up once a month for a 2 hr board meeting and is not actively involved day to day.

Apple would not willingly take a 5% hit on their stock unless it was a terminal situation with Jobs they would have just kept on with his indefinite medical leave but that can't happen when someone is dead so Jobs is about to die sadly IMHO

Timing is well planned: this way all the media furvor will die down by the fall and not effect product release. Don't think all this wasn't strategized long ago.

Unbelievable, why is everybody crying he's stepping down?
And Apple is just stuff, look around and care about the persons close to you. Steve Jobs doesn't matter, it's just another person in this world...

This has to be one of the more ignorant statements in this thread. Steve Jobs is most certainly not "just another person in this world." If you believe that your depth of knowledge on him is quite shallow.

He has had a profound impact on life as we know it today. From popularizing the concept of a "home computer," and replacing the command line with a user friendly mouse controller and GUI, to making MP3 players a viable choice vs. portable CD or tape players to reimagining how a smartphone, then tablet, should work. And then there are all the small tech details he helped pioneer. It's really hard to include all his contributions to societal evolution here.

What have you ever done that makes you a similar "just another person"?

Steve, be well in mind, spirit and body.

He did not discover penicillin (sp) but did create or bring into creation many things and systems that change our lives for the better; else how could they have been so successful...

May he use his remaining time well, hard to imagine he would not.

OMG be well. I don't understand how some evil men can live so long and a good man not. :apple:

Oh. Are you referring to the time when Apple was failing as a company? When products were produced that could barely compete and the viability of the company was in question?
I think you should check your history and you'll see what innovations Jobs is responsible for: mac, OSX, ipad, iphone. I don't think holding up "FaceTime" is fair and calling Apple a shell of a company is just ignorant.

I to fear he is leaving because of his ill health, I hope he has stepped down to focus on his treatment and has many years ahead of him.

Today was a big day for Apple lets hope they can prove all the haters wrong and continue to thrive in the desktop and mobile markets, which in reality they should and will.

Are you sure you have that right?
Shouldn't it read: prove all the haters wrong, right? Right?
;)

Edit: I see you've changed it. :)

Steve's vision will continue at Apple

We will miss Steve immensely. I am happy he is remaining as Chairman. Remember, it is the insanely incredible talent at Apple that executes Jobs' ideas and they will continue Steve's vision well into the future. Their products have always been great, they are great now, and will be so for years to come.

The only thing I want the Board to remember is: "Why were the iPhone and iPad such incredible hits and industry game-changers?" The answer is that they gave Steve the power to say, "This product is not ready yet." No matter how many years it was taking. Has any other CEO or Board ever had that ability? Not certain, but don't think so. Most companies are short-sighted and want the product out the door prematurely. Apple -- continue the high-quality of product development and vision. Don't become a commodity.

Wishing Steve well in his health and in spending well-deserved retirement time with his family.

Woz: "You’ve got to remember. He was surrounded by great, great people at Apple … and those people are still there. I don’t think the core Apple culture will change because of (Jobs’) leaving, not for a long time. Apple is set up. It just needs to stay financially responsible."

"He’s probably going to be remembered for the next 100 years as the best business leader of our time. He will watch the company for a while, hope its on such a good track. For a company as large as Apple, corporate culture doesn’t change overnight. The quality of the people doesn’t change."
