The great unknown...

It's a sad day that Steve can no longer uphold his duties as CEO. Many have said that his personality sucks - I just think he was a guy who had a great idea and that nothing (or no one) would get in his way.

Luckily, part of steves vision was to build an awesome company that designs and makes awesome products - and he has really made this a reality.

Apple without steve at the helm will still make awesome products because they have some awesome designers, engineers and managers - and of course, they have a massive base of customers who love their products.

I wish Tim Cook all the luck and I hope Steve is well and can continue to be part of the Apple community for many years to come.

Future!

Steve, I hope You will be around for a long time on a strategic level as chairman of the board and create the future for all of us. Thanks for everything !

tribute to Jobs

Well the guy is a genius. Even though I hate how he is so secretive with the release of his new products I understand his logic and amazing business ethic. Ironically, I just posted a discussion in one of my management classes on him just today and would like to add it to this bored to summarize his genius:

Almost every house has a Apple product in some way shape or form. Whether it be an IPod, IPad, Computer, etc. most people know that little symbol made up of an apple with a bite out of it. Business weekly has classified him as one of the leading innovators of the information age. I classify him as the number ONE innovator of today. A marketing genius, he created an elegant way for people to own and operate computers that had an easily operable interface along with a huge aesthetic appeal. Jobs recognized in 1976 the current computers on the market were hard to operate and its only market were experienced techies. Jobs created an easily manageable computer that allowed the average person to own and operate computers. You started to see Apple computers popping up in classrooms, Homes, and offices. Twenty-five years later, Jobs hit it big in the music business with Apple's iPod music player and iTunes online store. This created a blueprint for music and Net era. Pixar Animation Studios was the first to show that computer animation could be used to tell imaginative, touching stories. (Burrows, 2004). Jobs can-do attitude and will to create the best standing product skyrocketed him to one of the leading managers of a company. His perfection mindset enabled him to rise beyond his competitors while preventing anybody from stealing his ideas. (Burrows, 2004).

Good luck, good health, and God bless Steve Jobs you have made your mark in history and it is now time to reap the benefits of such amazing accomplishments.

Apple discussions aside,

Jobs is a definitive example of strong personality and genial businessmen!
It is really sad to see him go down with illness!

I am glad Steve is still at Apple, and genuinely sad regarding his health. Steve Job's is a visionary without equal, but his health and family come first and foremost. I love Apple products, but I would rather know that Steve is spending time taking care of himself and spending time with his family.

Get well Steve.

Unbelievable, why is everybody crying he's stepping down?
And Apple is just stuff, look around and care about the persons close to you. Steve Jobs doesn't matter, it's just another person in this world...

If Apple goes down without him, so be it, nothing lasts forever. I love working on my Macbook and will miss it if it gets worse, but this will not happen because he leaves. You seriously believe all of Apple's success is due to him? There are far more brighter persons than him working there who are for more responsible then you think.

All he did is turn Apple in another direction when they rehired him, now they have this direction and it can go on without him, probably even better.

he's a leader, he started the company in his garage, he's an idol to thousands all over the world, whats wrong with being sad??
get yourself on youtube and watch some keynotes, the guy is a legend!

Steve Jobs is a visionary. Such rare individuals do what they do from a deep passion, rather than for financial reward. Even though he remains as chairman, it's hard to imagine him resigning as CEO aged only 56 out of mere choice alone.

Like others here, though I suspect things are getting much more complicated for him, I very much hope that this isn't due to seriously failing health & that he remains at Apple in some capacity for many years to come.

Whatever the future brings, at least many of his ideas & products will stand the test of time & continue to be developed by those he's inspired (eg. J. Ive). So even as chairman, it's hard not to see him continuing to exert at least some influence on future ideas & products. Hopefully, that'll be the case for a long time to come.

it's a good time to upgrade to a PC, cuz macs would be crap without jobs

I upgraded to Apple when Vista came out (bought my first PC in 1982). I haven't regret the switch one single time. Once in a while, I help friends with their PCs, and that just makes me love :apple: even more. Not to mention Balmer. That guy gives me the creeps!

I know Apple is expensive, but I think it's worth every penny. I know you can get better bang for your bucks, but the simplicity and user friendliness of Apple's products are state of the art. I honestly believe that SJ has had a major influence on that.

I personally think today's news, leaves a big hole in the computer world. Sure, Apple has "stolen" from Xerox and MS, but compared to what others has stolen from Apple, I don't find that grave. I always pictured SJ, not as a great innovator, but more as the (stubborn) guy at the end of the table, giving thumbs up/down to new product ideas. At that he was astonishing. I'm not willing to go back to MS (and I can't see any reason), but the computer industry needs a new Jobs/Wozniak/Tramiel, and right now I can't see him/(her).

I wonder if this means his health is getting much worse. Maybe he figured it'd be better to implement succession while he is alive (with the perception of it being organized and collected) than shock the world and the markets if he were to die while holding the position.

I honestly don't think his health needs to be "getting worse" to have been thinking for a long time about the appropriate moment for succession.

He will still make a final presentation in September as a last hurrah! I suppose it's only fitting with the release of the iPhone and whatnot.

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

Jonny "John Boy" Ives should be the new Daddy

**** Tim Cook!

I hope Ives Kicks his ass bangkok style:mad:

First, it's Jony (Jonathan) Ive, not Jonny Ives.

Second, the qualities that make one the designer of excellent products are not the qualities that make one a good CEO. The CEO will sometimes have to convince people outside to do things they don't want to do, kicking and screaming. Like convincing the music industry to put their music on the iTunes store. That takes completely different qualities than it takes to design products.

I've found this desperately saddening.

I actually believe Steve when he says Apple's best years are ahead of it, because I think his key achievement has been getting all the structures and people in place and instilling his vision within the institution.

But it's that very end of the awakening of Apple that makes me sad. For me the excitement always comes at the start of a new project, getting it going, and I think Steve is finally saying that the recovery is over - Apple is the new force of computing.

I'm going to sit in a darkened room now with the email he sent me. It may only say "Nope." but it's my "Nope." and he'll always be CEO to me. He may have been well compensated for what he has done at Apple, and elsewhere, but I still send massive thanks to Steve Jobs for everything he has done to revolutionise computing. Bravo.

he's a leader, he started the company in his garage, he's an idol to thousands all over the world, whats wrong with being sad??
get yourself on youtube and watch some keynotes, the guy is a legend!

I watched most of the keynotes, but the ones from the last 2-3 years are just terrible. It used to be good yes, like the one with the coffin or where they refer to Windows. But now, half the keynote is about how wonderful the company is, how much they sell... And then a product. You can say your company is doing good, but to have such an air about it.

You can be sad when an idol steps down, I agree with that. But I just don't understand how you can consider him an idol. Like my previous post, yes he turned the company around after rehiring him, but in my opinion that's all he did. Others' opinion not and I know I must accept that, but it's difficult :)...

I have Steve to thank, for my MacBook Pro which I love to bits, and my iPad 2 which I also love to bits. Thank you for creating such and amazing company!

So thank you Steve, all the very best for the future.

I, for one, am glad. In my opinion, the Woz-era Apple was far more innovative and produced far better products, than the technically stagnant Apple with a cult-like following to match led by Jobs.

It is a sad day for sure.
Steve Jobs may not have invented every single piece of technology in every product helped bring to market but he had a vision and stuck with it and ultimately by any reasonable standard was a success. He convinced me that this iPad I am using for this post was something that I would want and need and made the experience unbelievable. Now I prefer it and rely upon it. Even here in this hurricane in the Bahamas. I used it all night to track the storm and email and whatever else I could do to pass the time. I think half the hotel did the same thing. The other half was stuck to a wall socket with their laptop as their batteries died.
Thanks Steve
