Sad. This news is truly a bag of hurt. Tim will do fine but it will be interesting to see how well Apple's track record of innovation holds up in the long term (5+ years from now when people are ready for the next big thing)

Sent from my iPhone - Thanks Steve

Cook has now addressed the Apple team as CEO in the email posted below:

Team:

I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity of serving as CEO of the most innovative company in the world. Joining Apple was the best decision I’ve ever made and it’s been the privilege of a lifetime to work for Apple and Steve for over 13 years. I share Steve’s optimism for Apple’s bright future.

Steve has been an incredible leader and mentor to me, as well as to the entire executive team and our amazing employees. We are really looking forward to Steve’s ongoing guidance and inspiration as our Chairman.

I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Apple’s unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that—it is in our DNA. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.

I love Apple and I am looking forward to diving into my new role. All of the incredible support from the Board, the executive team and many of you has been inspiring. I am confident our best years lie ahead of us and that together we will continue to make Apple the magical place that it is.

Tim

Apple higher ups? You dont get any higher than CEO lol.

True, but there is no one man that runs the company.

I don't have any idea why he chose to resign, but I have an opinion on why he chose to resign now.

There are already many new products about to be released. Next iPhone, iPod, Mac Pro likely by the end of the year, etc.. Once the new iPhone is released, even though he had influence in it. It will be looked at by many as a post Steve Jobs product. Same as the other devices coming out this year. Once those are a hit, Apple will look successful without him.

It's about appearance.

Steve was a great leader and he's largely responsible for the success of Apple. I do tend to believe his weak area was in his way of handling of the professional/enterprise market which I believe was more about personal intimidation than anything else. Being the guy with only a high school diploma and not very technically savvy constantly among "Big Brains" with matching advanced degrees from highly rated Ivy League/Tech Universities had to be daunting, whether he showed that in public/towards employees or not. Before you criticize this perspective think about how many times Jobs has used the phrase "US mere mortals." I hope Tim Cook receives the insight to see this and renews Apple's lease with the professional and enterprise market and soon since he is different than Steve Jobs in that way...He has advanced degrees and can walk into a room of "Big Brains" and not be intimidated by technical talk.

Wasnt Apple rated the most valuable company last week? Maybe he has taken it as far as he can and with his health and line up of up coming products its the best time. I dont think his health has taken a hit, obviously hes not going to be full of beans anymore but hes probably just thought its the perfect time.

When he starts selling his stock thats when people should worry as that would signal he is losing faith in the people in charge (it wont be for a while though).

Or, did they have to support dual-booting because Apple OSX was inferior software - people wanted Windows
I don't think they HAD to support dual-booting because of inferior software. I think they reached a wider audience and knew that would be the end result. It's merely an opinion though.
And, by the way, "Boot Camp" was hardly an invention - multi-booting has been around since forever. Apple made the process a little more fool-proof, that's all.
Exactly. I love it when people talk about dual-booting and think Boot Camp as though it did not exist long before.

I am quite intrigued to see where Apple goes now. I think Tim Cook is a great choice.

He is still remains the Chairman of the Board. Maybe he just felt the day to day activities were getting in the way of where he wants to direct the company for the future which is what his new role will entail. He has the day to day set and before he steps down completely he wants to have the future set in his vision. Just a guess

A simply brilliant man with a fantastic team under him

Hopefully he has many years of enjoyment ahead of him despite his illness. Looking forward to the continuaton of Apple under Tim, ever pushing boundaries forward.

You don't run the most important tech company in the world by being intimidated of someone elses 'big brains'. You can either suck them to a husk (most companies) or nuture them and let them grow (Steve).

If Steve was only 'just a man who didn't change anything', why did you buy Apple, and why will you buy Apple again? It is because Apple products stand for quality of design, usabilty as well as pushing forward the boundaries of technology.

I'm guessing that you have not taken enough time to find out how Steve Jobs impacted on the world around us.

It is not too late to do so now. Many articles have been published since the announcement was made. Try and find one that doesn't say how important he has been.

Again, it's a luxury product, luxury products tend to be good, look pretty and are easy to use. But did they change my life? No they did not. I'm not going to be less happy or change my life if I have to go back to a Windows based system, yes it would be more frustrating to use, but here comes the term luxury product again.

And once more, it's hard to believe Jobs said "the iPhone/iPad/iPod must work and look like this". There are so many people who had a much greater impact on the products then him.

To say he's a person who changed life, no. The people who invent cures against the terrible diseases, they change lives.

Period

IMO, I don't think either software is 'inferior', just different. I like OS X for lots of reasons but Apple [wisely] recognized there's lots of software in the world that is only Windows compatible.

I don't think they HAD to support dual-booting because of inferior software. I think they reached a wider audience and knew that would be the end result. It's merely an opinion though.

Exactly. I love it when people talk about dual-booting and think Boot Camp as though it did not exist long before.

It works both ways.

People will get the functionality they want one way or another.

Agree - I wasn't calling OSX "inferior" per se, just pointing out another way of looking at the reason for dual-booting. And yes, a Hackintosh is the opposite solution.

Perhaps the people who invent devices that make others who cure diseases to be more productive change lives as well? No?

Perhaps those who build roads that make people who cure diseases be able to get to their work faster and thus be more productive change lives as well?

Perhaps those who grow vegetables that people who cure diseases eat and then are more healthy for doing so and thus more productive change lives as well?

This is fun!

Looks like all the haters are disappointed this morning seeing that Apple didn't lose 30% of it's stock value. Just another day in the stock market. A $7 fluctuation today isn't any different than any other day in this goofy stock market. Guess that could change but hopefully cooler heads will prevail.

The stock market isn't going to be critical now; both Steve and the board have backed Tim Cook, and it's not like Cook is absolutely new to Apple. He's been important for a number of years, and groomed by Jobs to take the position.

The real test will be the next few product announcements/launches; those are where Apple will be pressed to "wow", both in presentation and product. That is when investors will be watching and Apple will either retain confidence or lose it.
